The Big List of Best Games I played over the past 2 years

I didn't do a list last year and frankly I wasn't going to do one on Giant Bomb this year either because I've circled back around to preferring to play games over writing about them without getting paid.

But, Steam keeps drawing me back with all the ways it gives me to express my views on games. It's more succinct there, but really gets me wanting to make a list so I made my 2020 list of Steam games this year on Steam. Then I decided, hell I've really been enjoying The Switch over the past 3 years and I want to be able to acknowledge that.

So then I just made this huge list of games I really liked over 2019 and 2020

I played several hundred games over the past 2 years. Here are the ones I remember that I played that I recommend anyone to check out

I'm not going too in depth like I usually do. But I will highlight where to get them (where it makes sense) because like all nerds with nostalgia and a habit I am a corporate shill. Just accept it. You are too.

This is not in a specific order.

If you wanna see my steam list, or get steam curation, you can check out my Steam Curator page here. I appreciate the follows. Support your local Steam curators.

List items

  • Hard as shit, but when you get it right it feels cool.

  • It could just be nostalgia. But I like having these old games to just check out when I don't want to do anything but stare at walls.

Seriously, I'm a sucker for this stuff.

  • This may be the best game I played this year in terms of fun. I really enjoyed this game despite the fact that this game is just grinding. Both literally and mechanically.

  • They released both Shivers games on GOG this year. If you like FMV games, and Myst likes, you should play them now.

  • I love the feel and tone of this game. I find the act of managing all the characters annoying as shit.

  • Since I enjoyed Mario Kart 8 I went and played this too. It's fun too, and still recommendable, although feels shorter.

  • Cool Myst-like but not as good ad some people say. Although I think some people just like it more than I do. It's fine. Check it out if you like wandering around looking for what your supposed to do for hours on end.

  • One of two low budget B tier horror games I played this year that I recommend. It's not amazing, but the developers really tried, and I had fun with the story for the most part. I think this game went a little unnoticed.

  • I put this game off because it doesn't get good buzz. It's broken in spots, and doesn't fully make good on what it is trying to do (a kind of RPG Adventure game is the best I can sum that up). You know, I still really liked it. I liked what it tried to do, and I don't regret playing it. There are just not a lot of these kinds of games and so if its even half decent it turns out it's still fun enough to experience the full way through. I may even play this again.

  • A fun end cap to the Dishonored franchise. The only thing that suffered, for me, is the story. But that's not surprising really. The mechanics are a ton of fun to play with and they added some powers that make the game even more interesting. I still highly recommend the Dishonored series if only for it's mechanics. The stories aren't always amazing, but the game play is consistently fantastic to me.

  • This is a cool PS4 remaster.

  • Terrible story, really really cool visuals. In this case it's actually a game worth checking out for the visuals because of the way they are used. The use of monsters is slightly irritating but manageable to me. It was neat to see the visuals. The story is not nearly as interesting as the first game. Different developer always equals "why did they do this?" This is no different. Just call it something else. There was no reason they had to call this Layers of Fear 2.

  • It was super easy to figure out a way to make all the hospitals successful within maybe an hour of playing any of them. Other than that I like this as a spiritual successor to Theme Hospital. The sucky thing is how you have to buy DLC to get other medical conditions which is the coolest part of the game. If you're like me you may not see all of them because it's so easy you get the point and it runs its course within 10 hours. Maybe a little less.

  • I loved the original game on PS2, and while slightly (very slightly) different this is a cool remaster of that game. It may be too close to the original for some (simplistic concepts, irritatingly complicated to do some things) but I enjoyed it to the end. The end sucks, but I like the game conceptually anyway.

  • I enjoy how much this feels like the XFiles. It's good to see Remedy doing something interesting with this game. I don't know why Quantum Break was so generic, may be an over arching effect from Alan Wake which was not a great game, but this game feels like they found a way to get a little crazy again with fun mechanics and a decent story. And maybe learn that the FMV is most fun when it's just a short little video on a TV somewhere and not a 30 minute break between combat shooting gallery scenarios.

  • I love the Fallout like feel to this game. That mixed with a 60s sci fi aesthetic gives them a fresh take on a concept originally only seen by one developer. What is even more interesting is that Microsoft now owns both developers that make games like this.

  • A really good Diablo clone. It's actually better than I thought it would be. Great for when you wanna listen to podcasts.

  • It's fun to play the different iterations of Street Fighter 2. I mean Street Fighter.

  • I'm still not into these games, BUT it's really cool how many characters are in the roster. It kinda felt like as a gamer I just HAD to play it . I don't know why I felt that way.

  • Not a great game (there's too much busy work) but it's got a cool look, and the platforming is fun. This one is everywhere so I recommend getting it on GOG unless you only have a console in which case only God can forgive you now.

  • I completed this game before, but shock of all shocks they re-released it on GOG and I got to play it again because I lost my game disc somehow. The good games always disappear to friends that don't give it back. GOG has it. Go get it right away, and see how cool it is to shoot bad guys in the dick over and over and over.

  • You can get it everywhere. I recommend getting it on sale so you can get 1 and 2 so you can import 1 into 2 and play 1 and 2 in the same engine which is the second games engine which has more improved graphics. It's actually fairly short so it even makes more sense to buy both of them together.

  • My personal favorite Final Fantasy, so yes I have played it before, however they made a new port for PC and I recommend it. It's not a remake, it's a port (I feel like people no longer know the difference), but it's a good port and this is a good Final Fantasy which I'm sure you've heard a thousand times. It's on steam. If you have the time I recommend it.

  • This originally released as a Kinect game on the XBOX 360 100 and 32 years ago. Then, they quietly released it on steam (its probably on the Windows store too, I don't know- do you care?) as a third person game. I really like the idea of going to an amusement park in a "simulator" style video game and my only complaint with it is that I wish the rides were more like the real rides and less just mini games, but it's still a fun way to interact with Disneyland when you cant go there for real. Especially right now, I highly highly recommend it.

They need to add Captain Eo. Just saying.

  • You already know this game is awesome, and last year I played it too.

  • Cool game, but gets tedious. Like all "metroid-vania" like games. Only maybe worse because of the nature of the pinball concept they jammed into the games mechanics.

  • The Best of The Sniper Elite series and absolutely worth checking out. It goes on sale a lot. Buy it then. Not that it's not worth full price, but might as well get it cheap now that it's an older title.

  • A fantastic remake of Blood. I say remake because they changed it up a bit, made the controls "modern." This makes the sprites react in a way that makes it look stylistic in a way that I don't think the game originally intended but has a cool effect. I absolutely recommend checking this out. It's on GOG.

  • It may a port from WIIU but this really is the best Mario Kart game I have played. You should know that this is the first Mario Kart I have played since Super Mario Kart on the SNES. It's still the best.

  • +Grubbins on ice DLC.

I bought this a very long time ago and only played it recently. It's a very fun RPG with a cool costume gimmick. You will finish the game wanting more. I warn you. The sequel is not the same, and in my opinion it is not as good which is why there was never a third game I suppose.

Do not buy the sequel in a fervor to play more Costume Quest. You will be disappointed.

  • This game is cool, but if you play single player you may get bored because the focus is multiplayer and so it's too hard in single player. If you have friends who are not against playing the same game as you this is worth playing

  • I finally played and finished this game. It's alright. The whole not knowing what to do or where to go thing is not as cool to me as it is to others, but with a map this game is actually fun.

  • I really like my switch.

  • This is not the best game I have played on the Switch but it has a cool look and that Nintendo charm which carried me to the unsatisfying ending.

  • One of the best games I played this year. Slow start, but it's worth it. Despite the terrible actor who plays the main character.

  • This is on Steam and if you are curious, like me, if these games play better or you just want to see the history of Halo because you're like me and you just want to know in a simple package then I recommend this. It plays better on PC, still is not a great first person shooter, but it's interesting to see the evolution and how bad Bungie's map design continues to be for decades.

I am serious though. It's interesting to me historically speaking. If you're not into Halo, you still won't be, but if you're curious it's worth checking out. And they almost finished porting all the games to PC.

Oh, beware, I don't play online but I hear the online COOP is a broken mess, and I don't hear good things about any of the online stuff. I only play single player.

  • I really like these anniversary collections.

  • They added Frog Fractions Game of The Decade Edition to steam this year, but it's not what you think.

Yes it's free, but I recommend you buy the DLC. That hat is important *wink*

This is the Game of The Year... Every Year.
