I'm not saying it's a bad game, just a mediocre one that, from point of view, has received too much praise for topics that specifically underwhelmed me. The reasons for why the robots are sad, mad etc weren't interesting at all for me simply because they were all too human. Now, I get that that's the point now having seen lore videos and listening to all the podcasts about it. It's just that, to me, that's a cheap way out. It's also, as I said, pretty gratuitous and, I'll add, lazy. There are some cool ideas about external pressures causing Darwinian-like change that are explored briefly in the play through C, but that's pretty much the only thing that piqued my interest.
There are single conversations in Mass Effect 2 between Shepard and Legion that are creepier and have more insight to the notion of identity and loss than Nier in all it's playthroughs. Again, this is just my opinion, so I'm not saying you're wrong for liking the game, it's just that I personally don't understand the "this game changed my life"-type mentality that people are taking with Nier.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills whenever I hear people fawning over Nier. The best parts of the game are wildly gratuitous that border on almost South Park-like moments. See that robot? He's actually sad!!!!!
The gameplay is bad; the characters are bad apart from a2; the story is lacklustre except for some moments towards the end that are kind of interesting. However, all in all, it's a pretty mediocre game.
