University second thoughts.

University, it is what i have been working towards for most of my educational life, well that is from the point where I actually started learning academic stuff and not just learning that which revolved around played and/or seeing what new and exciting inanimate object I could stick up my nose. Biology has always been a subject I have enjoyed the most and therefore it was a natural choice for a degree, but nowadays I am getting more and more second thoughts.

Now let me get one thing clear this is not going to be a "oh woe is me" type of thing, I am simply writing my thoughts and second thoughts down in the hope that I will, through writing them, be able to make some sort of sense out of everything. If you care to read and comment at some point please be my guest I nearly always enjoy hearing peoples views on situations.

Anyway as I was saying, I have always had a particular interest in biology, in specific zoology, being more specific than that evolution, taxonomy and the history of the earth (which I suppose is a more geological thing really). However, I find myself recently wishing that I had looked more down the literary route, the study of language, literature, philosophy and such. I love reading and even enjoy writing on the odd occasion, I was one of those odd characters that once I started writing an essay I would actually find myself enjoying it, I still find this when I am writing up pages of reports for lab experiments. I guess that this feeling has been brewing since I started to be able to have educated discussions with my dad about books, and realised that I wish I shared the wealth of knowledge about the english language that he possesses as an english language master. That feeling of jealously or maybe as that sounds a little strong for how i feel, envy, will have only been strengthened by my coming to university and meeting people doing a whole manor of degrees. My girlfriend for instance is studying Mandarin, which the more she tells me about it the more fascinating it seems. Everyone seems so knowledgeable on their own subject and are able to discuss it at length. People seem much more interested in having a chat about books or politics or music than they do about science, maybe that is another factor of my doubt the feeling that has a biologist I feel left out? Or maybe science is too complicated to have a simple talk about? No, I doubt either of those are true.

I suppose I just love to know about as much as I can, learning new things is something I gather great enjoyment from. I suppose that there will be literary undergraduates who are just as envious of me learning the inner workings of a golgi apparatus and of Darwin's work on his origin of species as I am of their studies of the great authors.

At the end of the day I have hopefully another 60 years on this planet minimum, I have so much time to pursue my various interests. It would be foolish to make a rushed decision that I would regret.

See this blog is helping already.

I'll write more when the mood takes me.

Unless you absolutely detest it, I'd stick with a science when it comes to getting a qualification.

I'm doing a BA next year and I know that when i'm finished my job prospects are going to be far slimmer than those of someone doing a more practical course.

While I was working towards college I thought I would become a veterinarian. I found Biology interesting and even enjoyable, but at some point I just lost interest. Now finishing my history degree (As backup) and hoping to go Pre-Law after this semester. I love writing research papers and pouring over information, and once I start writing on a subject I usually enjoy it as well. :P

Since you aren't asking for advice I won't give any. But I will say this, being inquisitive and questioning what you're going through and what you're learning in university is normal. In my opinion, University is a place where people primarily learn how to become an adult; grow from being a child to an adult who understands their significance in the world and around other people, and secondarily earn a degree. This is debatable however, and you should choose whatever you value and stick to it. You'll do just fine.

@DriveupLife: Yeah i learnt a lot about myself in my unexpected gap year, moving to australia for 6 months and having to find a place to live and a job made me mature a lot. Im going to enjoy university life as much as i am capable of, and i might be able to take an elective in a subject i am curious about. Thanks for your support!

@CptChiken:

Just get through college regardless of what you end up studying. Even if you don't get a job pertaining to your degree, you'll still NEED that degree in the long haul.

Dude I totally respect your knowledge in biology, as that has always been a subject that I have trouble with. Now Criminology, Law and Society, there's something I know a thing or two about.

@CptChiken: I am currently a student in college and I have just recently realized that I want to major in something completely different then my current intended major. My best advice for you is to major in what ever you truly want to major in, and don't ever let anyone decide your future for you. Secondly, don't be afraid to change your mind, or explore areas you think you'll enjoy. From my personal experience, I have realized that you have to do what you love, and if you don't love what you do you will not be happy or successful.

/slap. You fool. You do biology majors shame. We are the most multidisciplinary field of study out there. Good luck understanding anything in biology without physics, general chemistry, organic chemistry, logic, history, calculus, and philosophy of science. You're friend is reading poems? He gets credit for that?? This week I'm shipping off 9 genomes to Johns-Hopkins to be sequenced and you know what my art major friend is doing? he's coloring pictures. We both pay $20,000 and sadly we both get 'degrees'. But honestly who's is worth more? If you have to ask your self is science worth pursuing maybe you don't belong here. Natural Philosophy is not for the weak. If you'll excuse me I'm studying calculus based particle physics for my exam later this week. Can your girlfriend do that?

I am an English Major simply because I enjoy reading and writing.

Although I also enjoy and appear to be good at philosophy but I do not see myself enjoying it as an everyday thing.

Good luck with whatever course you choose.

@pplus0440: Art is an integral part of a culture and its identity. Gilgamesh for instance teaches us about the Mesopotamian Gods and the customs and beliefs of those people. The Symposium teaches us about some Greek customs and the list goes on and on. (and those are only a minute amount of literary works, what about all the sculptures and cave paintings etc.)

maybe so foolish one still_I_cry. But the sad truth of the matter is we can't all be famous writers and musicians. Reading gilgamesh is more of a fun thing to do then something society needs to have done.

Although life is all about doing what you love, you are currently in a great field. If you still enjoy studying biology then I say stick with it. If you enjoy writing then do it in your freetime. Keep reading and writing in your free time and do something with your biology degree.
