Love this metacritic summary for the Slant Magazine review:

"The game believes it's a sci-fi version of Eyes on the Prize, when really it's closer to a sci-fi Kendall Jenner Pepsi commercial."

A Tesla Model S is cheaper than the cheapest Ford Mustang in Norway - due to our weird tax system. They're everywhere :)

Dan and Jeff doing an anime show is like two 10-year acquaintances that you thought you knew fairly well suddenly, casually shed their skin and become lizardmen. Or space aliens.

The pure vitriol in some of these comments astound me. These lists are SUBJECTIVE. You don't HAVE TO AGREE. The pure desire for collective groupthink is amazing.

I bounced off Zelda just after getting my damn parachute-floaty-thing. I realise open worlds are not for me. Also, I don't enjoy the difficulty.

PUBG is an amazingly well put together game that I play very rarely, because I suck at videogames. Doesn't make me hate people that enjoy it.

I admire Nier:Automata from afar, kinda like Joyce's Ulysses. Incomprehensible without way too much effort :)

I've not played Dream Daddy, but based on the subjective views of Jeff, Vinny and Abby, I would probably enjoy it. Games are an artform, and demanding purely rational arguments for whatever you appreciate is weird. I love a lot of things - and most of those I can't objectively rationalise.

The introduction of Horton Boone was in my top 3. That character is great, and so well voiced by the Swede from Hell on Wheels :P

The Hitler sequence went slightly over the top for me ...

@creutzfeldt: Honestly, Nier: Automata is not worth the potential emotional investment. Also "happy games" like Odyssey present their setting through gameplay and atmosphere. Sometimes amazing games don't need narration from chracters but the world itself and the atmosphere can tell you a lot about it while making you feel attached to the chracters.

Escapism comes in many flavors however. Its not solely wish-fullfillment or "being happy". Sometimes being immersed in a great story (also one you may write yourself, see open world games for instance) also counts. Nier: Automata, while having a fully realized setting and a worthwhile story is not THE game you have to play by all accounts. You can miss it out fully without feeling like you've missed something important here.

There are tons of amazing games out there that make you care about the player chracter, too. Dozens, if not hundreds of them are impactful in a similar vain.

I think my reluctance regarding Nier:Automata is also affected by the length of the game. I've enjoy shorter games like Papers Please, What remains of Edith Finch and Firewatch that are (ultimately) fairly dark - but they're relatively short experiences that are pretty much one-sitting games where you're not immersed in it for days :P

Good list! I'm enjoying reading people's experiences playing Nier:Automata, and I can appreciate it - but the bummer nature of it makes me hesitant to play it.

I'm a pretty melancholic guy already - and play games partly for escapism - so I'm not sure if I'd be able to extract much enjoyment from it.

Love that games like these get made though - I'm just heeding my internal trigger warning :)

Abby truly has the patience of a saint. If this whole improv/gamer thing doesn't work out, she would do well teaching pre-school :)

AC:Origins made me get back to studying a bit of egyptian history - it's pretty interesting. For a fun introduction I'd recommend https://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/history-of-ancient-egypt.html

One of the most impressive facts about the longevity of egyptian civilization is that the era in which AC:O takes place is closer to our time - than the time the pyramids got built.
