Gaming sequels never to come

We all have them and we all know what games spring to mind whenever somebody asks you. You play a game and sink sweet, precious, valuable time into it until you conquer it. Watching the credits roll you ponder at the thought of a sequel to the game so you can return to the world you sank many hours in. Maybe the game even sets up a sequel at the end of the game giving you, even more, reason to be excited. You wait until the dreaded day comes when you realize there is no sequel coming. This can be for many reasons like bad sales, studio shutting down, it was in development then ended up getting canned. Well, today ladies and gents I wanted to give you the games I know won't be getting a sequel that breaks my gamer heart.

Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy: One of my favorite games coming out of the ps2 era as a kid Psi-Ops blew my mind. You play as Nick Scryer and you wake up with no memory trying to take down the evil organization known as The Movement. It was your standard third person shooter with one exception you possessed access to awesome psychic powers. With its tight controls and cool ragdoll physics creating some hilarious gameplay when you would telepathically slam people into walls, explosive barrels, or drop them off a ledge hearing them scream until they inevitably die. You could burn people with pyrokinesis, mind control enemies to solve puzzles or turn them onto their fellow squadmates, mind drain opponents to cause their head to explode, remote viewing to see through walls and scout out rooms, and aura viewing to see invisible mines and fight aura beast. Using these powers you fight your way through The Movement's head honchos and defeat the general effectively saving the world. You are treated with an endgame cutscene that ends with this message.

The kid in me still wonders what happens after that screen to this day. With Midway closing and nobody taking the rights for the game and I will always have to live with the fact that I won't be getting any closure for this game especially for something with so much potential.

Heavenly Sword: A title which many may have missed out on due to a struggling Ps3 in it's beginning years. Heavenly Sword is a third person action game where you play as Nariko battling the tyrannical Bohan and his army from wiping you out and creating a golden era. You take hold of powerful sword aptly named after the title of the game to combat him and trying to save your village. Being this was Ninja Theory's second game and first, as Ninja Theory, formerly known as Just Add Monsters, it came as a surprise to me that it was actually really good. The world was interesting and the setting was different being more of a traditional eastern vibe to it. The soundtrack added to that feeling sounding like something you would hear in an old kung-fu movie. The combat was so smooth and fun to play with switching from the three combat styles of fast ranged attacks, medium dual bladed, and one large heavy blade. There were plans to have a sequel, but it was announced in 2010 the game was canceled due to poor sales from the first game and the developer later stating that a sequel was "extremely unlikely". Due to the Ps3 not having the greatest launch year most folks didn't get a chance to play this gem and its a shame. Maybe if Sony did a better job with the Ps3 launch we could have a sequel to an underrated game and return to this interesting world Ninja Theory built.

What are some of your games that you know will never get a sequel? Do you think it will happen eventually? Also, what did you think of the games above and do you think they should get a sequel as well. Let me know and as always have a nice day.

I would kill for a DmC 2. There is an unbelievable amount of negativity towards that game and I think those people are crazy. I'm a HUGE Devil May Cry fan, I even liked 2 at the time even though I only played it once when it was released.

I think DmC was a great game and a refreshing take on the series, Ninja Theory did a great job but I think that game never had a chance with a lot of the "core" fan base. This might not be fair but I feel like a lot of people shit on that game from minute one and never really gave it a chance.

I have no idea how much it sold but it probably wasn't enough! Holy shit I love that game.

@pompouspizza: I would also love to see Ninja Theory get another shot at DmC. That game was great. So what if it was a different Dante, it played well, combat and platforming was great, the soundtrack fit perfectly and the bosses are some of the best in the series.

I don't think it's as great as some people make it out to be but, Binary Domain needs a sequel. And Vanquish. And The Evil Within. Oh and the thing I'm playing now, Freedom Fighters.

I want a sequel to Max Payne 3. Not because of story reasons. Max Payne has been through enough and it would probably be better to do a spiritual successor. No, the reason I want a sequel is because I find the game much more appealing than Rockstar's open world comedies. But I know there will never be another Max Payne. The masses have spoken. 70 million of them.

@jesus_phish: People are entitled to their opinions but it annoyed the hell out of me whenever I saw people shit talking the game just because it wasn't the old Dante. I absolutely loved what they did with the story in that game and I thought the combat was fantastic. I also really liked Dante as a character. The more I think about where that game left off and where it could have gone, the sadder I get.

I understand that people get attached to things and always want them to be exactly what they remembered but I would always rather developers try something fresh and new over doing the same thing again and again.

Even if it fails and is terrible, I'm so happy with the direction Capcom is taking Resident Evil. I would rather a game fail while it's trying to do something new than just "here's another Resident Evil game in the style of the everything we have been doing for the last 12 years."

Bulletstorm is the first thing that came to mind for me. That game was super creative and fun and they totally leave it open for a sequel.

Also, that Dmc game was amazing and I have no idea why people had such vehement negativity towards it. Maybe it comes from fans of the older games? As someone who never played a devil may cry game before that new one, I can only guess I didn't have the baggage of old fandom coming into it.

Having just finished MGScanlon, I lament the lack of a Rising 2.

Crystallis 2, which was even teased by SNK during one of their attempts at resurgence. The original was a way better Zelda back in the NES era. I love revisiting it.

Since you asked, I'll explain why I dislike it.

The gameplay is simplistic and monotonous, featuring few enemy types and two evade buttons that do the same thing.

On the story side, it's pretty awkward for how it mixes melodrama and humor while trying to be cool. The dialogue is so unnatural at times. The last chapter is forced (the way Vergil verbalized his real motives), and once the fight is over the game ends quietly and abruptly, like there is more that needs to be said or done. A stark contrast to the ending of DMC3, in which Lady and you as Dante continue slaying demons to the theme song, in the spirit of the game. Instead, after the unsatisfying ending you're shown narcissistic videos of the devs and these gross looking try-hard punk rockers trying to look cool, one developer flipping off the camera (you) while walking away finally. You're not cool, Ninja Theory. Shame on you.

Pretty mediocre game.

Brütal Legend. It's a personal favorite--definitely not perfect, but the tone, world, atmosphere, and characters were all really well done. The RTS combat needs work, but with the rise of the MOBA genre, I think if they took some inspiration there, the game would work a lot better. I need more metal-inspired video games!

I really wanted to like Heavenly Sword but I just could not get on board with the stance switches. Much like DmC having enemies that are invulnerable to every type of weapon except one limits the amount of combos you can pull off and just feels and looks dull. Thankfully there's an option to take that shit out in the "Definitive Edition" but I have yet to play it.

I didnt hate those games, I actually think Ninja Theory are a talented developer (I even enjoyed Kung Fu Chaos quite a bit) but they're better off making more cinematic story based games, and from what i've seen of Hell Blade it seems like they've come to terms with that.

Hell yes to all of that. I know there isnt much love for The Evil Within on this site but that game was the best survival/action horror since RE4 to me. (Dead Space was cool but those jump scares were tedious and cheap)

I'd like another MGR and Onimusha game but given the state of Capcom and Konami I know that isnt going to happen.

It's more likely than another Psi-Ops though. (which looks great but I havent played it)

@ezekiel: To each his own. I appreciate the explanation. Like I said, I don't really have an experience with the previous games, so I only went in looking for an action game and found it to be satisfying on that front. The story and characters seemed very much hit or miss, but if there was one thing that game did good it was the gameplay. Playing the game felt anything but simplistic and monotonous, so I can't really agree with you there. As far as the ending, it was kinda jarring to see things turn the way they did, and yeah it definitely felt like there was more that needed to be said. Which is why it needed a sequel! Good on ya for giving it a chance though.

On a related note, I really should go back and play those older games at some point. 1, 3 and 4 I mean, since I hear nothing but bad things about 2. Hmm, might have to see if I can find a copy of that hd collection.

Where's my Shogo 2? Really liked the groove of playing on foot missions and mech missions.

good sense of scale and I appreciated being able to choose out of three mechs. It even had a branching ending. Amazing game

@themanwithnoplan: @jesus_phish: @pompouspizza: maybe 'cause I don't hang around other sites but didn't DmC get plenty of love around these parts. I can't speak for the entire DMC crowd obviously but it's hard to accept the new Dante 'cause Dante has been well established for 4 games. What was off putting about Ninja Theory's game was it's 'tude, especially Dante's. It felt like they were trying way too hard which is completely wrong for Dante. I'm surprised that wasn't a sticking point at GB seeing how they ripped Drawn to Death to shreds for being a teenager's day dream. I feel like people would've been a bit more accepting if Capcom said it was a one-off experiment. I was down about it for a long time 'cause they straight up said it was the new direction. That said, I personally had a good time with it. It was a more mainstream, Western interpretation, and a good one at that. I'd like to see more Western interpretation of other established Japanese franchises but again, as a one-off. I like the ending as well and it got me hyped 'cause as a DMC fan, you know exactly where it's all going. I sometimes do wonder though where DmC would stand if it didn't have the expectation and baggage that comes with a name so revered by a small but protective base.

@boozak: I was so excited leading up to E3 'cause people kept saying The Evil Within 2 was going to show up at Bethesda's conference. I'm still holding out hope though 'cause it seemed like people were pretty sure...plus what else could Tango and Mikami be doing under ZeniMax's watch.

I'm sad we'll never get Skies of Arcadia 2, or much rather a Skies of X air pirate rpg. I also think that Anarchy Reigns got a bum rep and would deserve a sequel. As for an older game, Metal Warriors was the coolest mech game. While Titanfall almost scratches that itch of jet packing dudes and mechs, I really want to see crazy mechs like spiders and rolling balls in Titanfall 3.

Thing is with that game its had all of the "must have" cameo's and pretty much covered all the rock cliches that doing another one wouldn't have the same impact. It's one of my favourite games of the last generation but I feel its done. Amen to more metal inspired games though! Just not a sequel to this one. It's perfect as a standalone title.

Monster World V. Or Wonder Boy VI. The sequel numbering became a clusterfuck after they split the series. The fourth Monster World was a little disappointing and only released in English years after the fact, but the second and third are still two of my favorite games ever. Westone Bit Entertainment went bankrupt and into liquidation in 2014. Sega still owns the IP.

Phantasy Star V. Phantasy Star Online - despite its success - was never the same as the mainline, numbered Phantasy Star releases. With the current state of JRPGs, it's doubtful we'll ever see another.

Space Harrier 3. 3D games before the hardware could do 3D. Sin and Punishment - completely unrelated but similar game play - were decent stand ins, but not quite as mindbogglingly weird as Space Harrier.

I want Sega to get off their arse and do something with all their old IPs.

Dragon's Dogma 2 - Considering the DD Online isn't available in the west, which means a VPN and third party patches to get it working, I don't count it. Maybe my favourite game of the past few years.

Kane and Lynch 3 - The second game had tight action, a cool visual style and some unique multiplayer. Would love to see what happens next with these two assholes.

Jedi Knight 4 - In my mind the cannon/best ending to Jedi Academy has Jaden going dark and Kyle leaving to hunt him down. Now that's a game I want to play.

I agree 100% with heavenly sword, loved that game. It was a (semi?) launch title or atleast early and people wanted 80hr games to justify the ps3 price. Story and character dialogue and acting were grade A, combat was fun, and the only issue was they needed something else to do besides fight dudes. The game probably would have benefited from even some bad puzzle's to pad it out a couple hours lol.

Honestly i would add in the rest of Ninja Theory's games as well, DMC and Enslaved specifically.

Darksiders will probably never see a sequel or completion of the story, instead of developing new games the guys who bought the IP seem to be content with cashing out the old games with ("deathinitve?) *upgrades*

I can't believe I can't answer this question with "Nier" anymore.

Way too soon for another one, but I want to see some kinda continuation of World of Final Fantasy. So many more characters to fanservice out, and the mechanics/flow of the game lend themselves well to iteration. Plus getting some hot remixes of classic FF music is always nice.

Oh, and The World Ends With You. I don't understand why they teased it so much with the iOS port and prominent inclusion in a recent Kingdom Hearts game, and then proceeded to do absolutely nothing.

Parasite Eve - I loved the first game...don't think I ever played the second. I think the mix of real time and turn based combat from the first is just begging to be given the Final Fantasy XV style combat treatment.

Shadows of the Damned - This game was awesome in every way, I mean Suda51 and Mikami teaming up for a heavy metal demon world adventure is just too perfect an idea. Great music, style, visuals, and fun to play. I'll never understand the lukewarm to negative response this game got. It's not perfect, and could definitely improve. Unfortunately I don't think we'll get a chance to see that happen.

No One Lives Forever - With good FPS campaigns back in style, now is the time to bring back one of the greats! These games are so slept on, but my god are they awesome. I've wanted another one of these for a long ass time...and no Contract J.A.C.K. does not count.

There's something funny about a game or movie setting up a sequel that never materializes. Even funnier when they have several sequels planned in advance ala Advent Rising for the original Xbox. Not a video game but my favorite example is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 where Sony had talked about several spin-offs including a Sinister Six movie, a prequel about Spider-Man's parents, and plans for Spidey to possible appear in future X-Men movies that all immediately fell apart when the movie failed to live up to expectations.

Anyway on to sequels I would have loved to have seen:

1. Ristar - It was an excellent Sega platformer where you played as a star who had stretchy arms it used to navigate platform puzzles and to smash enemies into your face. Problem was it came out at the tail end of the Genesis life-cycle.

2. Sleeping Dogs - This is a game by all rights that should have been terrible but ended up being a hidden gem. Sleeping Dogs started life as the second sequel to the less than stellar True Crime series and nearly became vaporware when Activision shut it down. Thanks to SquareEnix swooping in and saving it we got a real fun open world crime game that isn't perfect but had incredibe melee combat, interesting characters, and a fun if a tad predictable story.

3. L.A. Noire - In hindsight the game is a one trick pony but it does that one trick really well. Never the less I am a sucker for that Chinatown/L.A. Confidential vibe that game had and I loved that the characters were played by recognizable character actors. Shame the studio that made the game mistreated their employees to such a degree that even Rockstar was appalled.

Yes, yes! Name another game where monsters from a dimension of imaginary numbers attack and turn people into salt? And can only be fought by robot Mary Magdalene and Space Jesus In Disguise? Who are both party members? Because Gnosticism. Or something. Episode I was peak batshit sci-fi anime crazy and I want more.

Also, paging @zombiepie. No Final Fantasy plot's got anything on Xenosaga. I want to see you play the first 5 or 6 hours of Episode I. But you have to livestream it and have a camera on your face the whole time. I want to see a human's head literally explode once in my life.

Mercenaries 3: No Limits. Goddamnit, EA. The Saboteur 2 as well.

Also it seems like Command and Conquer is probably done so that also sucks. I loved 3 and enjoyed Red Alert 3, but C&C 4 was a miss for me. They cancelled Tiberium which seemed super rad, as well as Generals 2 which had a real weird life cycle before being canned. I'm still not over that EA killed two of my favorite developers (Pandemic / Westwood).

Also, another Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge would be awesome. I played the hell out of the game on the first Xbox.

I second Brutal Legend, not for any gameplay reasons, but because there's so much potential for more world-building and excellent art work there. It would be wonderful to see another one of those, but obviously, even the first one never really should have seen the light of day. I'd also love to see another Elite Beat Agents. It has a great attitude and its core mechanics have so much longevity in them. The first EBA had only a handful of levels so it would be excellent to see a follow-up, but as we've not had one by now, we probably won't ever get one. Oh, and it would be cool if SWERY had been able to make at least one more season of D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die. It was left on a complete cliffhanger, and while it had a lot of pacing and storytelling problems, there was something about the accessibility and silliness of it that made it compelling. Again though, it looks like that ship has sailed.
