Metroid Dread is ultimately a middling game of great spectacle. It’s questionable E.M.M.I. gimmick, lack of accessibility features, and it favoring a heavily directed path will like turn off both hardcore fans of the genre and people looking for a fun casual experience. (Note: This review will talk pretty openly about many things in this game, including abilities. Outside of one thing, it does not have any truly…
The Pedestrian has a cool idea and aesthetic, but it falls back on just pretty typical puzzle-platformer and one-hit-death platformer tropes that prevent it from being very interesting beyond the nifty premise. The core aesthetic of this game is rad. You play as a little person icon that adventures through various signage through a dreamlike city. When you reach the exit of one sign, you’ll pan the camera through…
It's very easy to reduce Code Vein to Dark Souls but with more anime tropes. At a glance that's pretty much what it is. There are genre conventions of both Souls-like (Blight Town and Anor Londo equivalents) and anime (like flashy choreographed fight scenes, melodramatic confessions of love, and a character who looks like she's 16, but is actually much older.) I would not say that it particularly subverts those…
FutureGrind is one of those games that is pretty simple to understand but has a surprising amount of depth. This was a game I’ve been waiting a long time to play. I first heard of it at a Giant Bomb meet up at PAX west (the one with Mario Party Party 5). It really blew me away there so I’ve been following it ever since. So you can bet I was very excited for its release. Fortunately, it did not disappoint! In this…

Late in 2013, after having the typical difficulties of remembering all the games I played that year and what I had thought of them at the time for my games of the year list, I decided that it would be an interesting experiment to log what games I've played and when for 2014. After a year of gathering data I came about some mildly interesting results: I played about 104 video games in 2014, anyw...

Some of my friends have put together a charity event called Tales of Tales. The just started now and will be going all weekend long. They'll be playing Tales of Symphonia and will be doing donation challenges and other fun things during the stream. The charity they're raising money for is First Book that gets books to poor kids. Come check it out.

The Candy Jam is official over, but is still accepting submissions til the end of the week. For those that don't know, the Candy Jam was a sort of protest that spawned out of King.com's trademark over the words "Candy" and "Saga" then use such trademarks to send legal warnings to developers whose games contain such words regardless of whether those games had any similarities to their game Candy...

UPDATE: I fixed a few things with the download. Had the wrong kind of file up there. Whoops Here's what I made for the Candy Jam - http://d_w.itch.io/candy---a-space-horror-saga Don't know what the Candy Jam is? This is the first actual entirely complete game I've ever made by myself. I did all the programing, art, and audio. It's a rather simple game. You click to move your guy around. Once yo...

I'm a sound designer who wants to work in video games. So I was looking for things to do to expand my portfolio and figured replacing the sound effects from video game cutscenes is a pretty spiffy way to do that. Here's one that I did recently. It's the Sheeva transformation scene from Parasite Eve. All the sound effects except for the dog barking were created, recorded, and preformed by me. I...

I had never attended a game jam before. I never really thought I was in a position or skilled enough to complete something in such little time. But I love ridiculous ideas and the mock twitter account, PeterMolydeux, was one of the reasons why I signed for twitter so I could not have not gone to Molyjam. (Now there's an awkwardly worded sentence!) For those that don't know. Molyjam was (is?) a...
