GOTY 2015

This year supposedly has been a great year for video games, but I barely played anything compared to last year. Especially since starting a new job in November. I haven't played too many games released this year, but the ones that I did I liked a whole lot. Usually I have a lot of trouble trying to come up with a solid top ten. This year I find it hard to think of ten games released this year that I finished and liked enough. So much so that I'm just going to limit this to a top 3. I just didn't make the time or had the money to play enough games this year.

EDIT: I feel I should expand on this since usually I put an honorable mention or at least some bits about the games. I still feel the the top 3 are my real games of the year and the rest are ones that I have mostly mixed feelings on.

List items

  • Life Is Strange is probably the most significant game since Gone Home in terms of the subject matter it deals with. It may not do things perfectly but it does what it does very well. It has the most painful and difficult I've ever made in a video game.

My only real complaint is that they set up a sequel rather than finishing it in one go. I fear they may ruin what they've set up by trying to keep it going as long as possible.

  • Undertale kind of came out of nowhere and also did what it did very well. I really appreciate games that allow the play to get through them nonviolently. Not only that but Undertale encourages it's players to do the nonviolent path by making everything so delightfully charming.

My only real issue with it is that unlike it's major source of inspiration, Earthbound, it's kind of difficult for people without the knowledge and understanding of the medium to really appreciate and play. However Undertale Let's Plays are apparently quite popular with kids and that makes me real glad.

  • This is one my favorite games to just sit and play and do nothing else. For a year where I didn't play a lot of games I've put over 74 hours into Cities: Skylines which is probably more than any other game this year.

  • SO the first episode of this game came out in 2014 and the last won't be out til 2016. Most of this game come out this year so it'll probably weed it's way on to all 3 year's lists for me.

I have mixed feelings about this game. There's some stuff that I really like. Mainly the Zoe stuff. The original Longest Journey is one of my all time favorite games so the sequels have a lot to live up to. This game gets it right in places, but its wonky animations and unnecessary stealth bits really hold it back.

  • I enjoyed what I played of Rocket League but sort of fell out of it after a while. I wanted to get really into it, but just never did. In the end I only put about 7 hours into it, which is fine. It's still a pretty good game and I'd look to one day check out the competitive scene.

  • I did not finish this game and likely won't. I played up just before you meet Quiet apparently and stopped because I was getting bored of the locations ironically enough. Still, like Undertale, I was glad for a game where I could be nonviolent. I never killed anyone when playing as Snake in this game. I knew the spoiler and felt it was not his character. Non-lethal all the way. However I found that the game presents wacky solutions to you (like using dummies to stop vehicles so you can knock everyone out and steal them) but doesn't often reward you for those solutions. Coupled with the repetitive nature of going back to the same 10 locations just kind of made me stop playing. Also I may have killed a bunch of people while playing as a different soldier and felt real bad and disappointed in myself for a couple days.

Still it's the first AAA game I've bought since Skyrim. So I suppose that says something about it.

  • Ok so this game came out in 2013, but there was a massive update to it that added and improved the game a lot. It went from a pretty good Metroidvania to the best one I've played since Super Metroid. The final boss is still terrible and the writing is fairly sophomoric, but everything else is just so good.

  • This was an interesting jRPG styled game that I never finished. I found the regular combat was just never challenging and just sort of lost steam. I'm probably about 70 to 80 percent through the game too. Still it's nice to see a non-RPGMaker jRPG and it did have some interesting systems.

  • I really enjoyed this game pre-release, but something about the post release version of the game just didn't grab me. Maybe it was because I was trying to do a no-death hard run. I don't know.

  • I really want to like this game. The music, art, and atmosphere are amazing. But then there's the issue of the controls. I could not stand the way the controls are laid. Too many abilities have dedicated buttons when those buttons would be better suited for other actions. God what I wouldn't have given for a dash button instead of the double tapping. There's a great game here that is stifled by terrible control layout.
