GOTY. The Best Games I played in 2017

I actually didn't play a ton of games this year but there are a few that I feel like ranking for 2017. Going from less best to best, these are my top games of 2017 that I actually played.

Honorable mentions to Cuphead, Horizon and Persona 5. All of which I only played an hour or so of, or in Persona 5's case, none at all. I have Persona 5 literally in my PS4 but I have yet to fire it up. Cuphead was too challenging for me to rush through, and Horizon just came out at a time where I started it but got distracted.

5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Im going to be honest, I havent finished this game or my number 4 game. But from what I played of both, I believe they belong on this list. I also have to admit, Ive never finished a Zelda game, and I'm honestly not even a Zelda guy. My first Zelda games were the CDI ones. Yes. I'm that guy. Breath of the Wild is the first Zelda game Ive actually given a crap about. I bought a Switch, and I bought BOTW. I mean I remember the E3 when they first showed BOTW, I blew my frickin mind wide open. Its liek skyrim but with the Link dood! I mean I almost kinda sorta thought about buying a Wii U for this game. A WII U! Anyway, long story short, it's a great game. It a game that I play like some people play Skyim. I'm in no rush. I pop in for an hour or two, kills some things, check out some shrines, pop out. I don't plan on finishing this game anytime soon. It's just something I go to when I want to enjoy a beautiful world made by Nintendo.

4. Super Mario Odyssey

I honestly don't have a ton to say about this one. In all honesty I'm actually not much of a Nintendo guy. I had a NES and SNES as a kid, but back them most of the games I played were on Genesis. I didnt have a 64 until way later in life. I did play a lot of Goldeneye at the time. Never owned a Gamecube. You get where I'm going? But the Switch is turning me into a closet Nintendo guy. And Super Mario Odyssey is making me like Mario again. I mean the story is kinda bare-bones, but people don't come to Mario for story. The wonderful thing about this game, it's just a joy to play. Metal Gear Solid turned me into a story first type of player, but Odyssey reminds you that sometimes it's just fun to ignore the story and just play a fun ass game.

3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Do you like Uncharted? Arguably the best looking game of 20-whatever. Lost Legacy is ultimately more of the same. And that's a good thing. Janina actually encapsulates my thoughts on this game pretty well. Having two female protagonists for this one is dope. And having both Black and Indian representation in the game is dope. I'm all for representation, it's odd to say but it really does feel great to say, "Hey that girl/guy looks like me." Nathan Drake's character is beginning to become dated, so I enjoyed the change of characters for this game. Also it's an open world Uncharted game. How did it take this long for that to happen? At the end of the day, its more of what you love, but slightly different so it's fresh. It's like adding hot sauce to an old favorite dish.

2. NieR:Automata

This game fully encompasses everything that I love in video games. The first game that blew my mind from showing the scope and scale of what video games could be was Metal Gear Solid. I remember playing the demo of the first hour or so, over and over, to the point where I actually conned the Youth Center near my house to buy the game so I could play through it after school every afternoon. Yoko Taro pretty much takes a lot of things that I first learned to love in games like MGS and runs with it in new and fascinating ways. He was slightly on my radar after I played maybe a third of the original Nier. Ultimately I "bounced off" that game but I knew there was something there. Nier: Automata is the type of game that speaks specifically to my sensibilities. A dope action Platinum game with existential themes and a THICC (sorry) female protagonist? I'm all in. Especially because I grew up with PlayStation and primarily Japanese developed games. Nier was just a joy to play through, and the story kept me enthralled and full of questions throughout the entire play though. Im not sure I would say the story completely payed off by the end, but it did keep me entertained for all 5(?) of my playthroughs.

1. What Remains of Edith Finch

If you told me that my game of the year would be a walking simulator about fantastical stories where you play a 17 year old girl... well... actually I might have believed you. When I finally got around to playing What Remains of Edith Finch, a game I heard a lot of hype about, I was still genuinely surprised with the entire experience. Edith Finch is a game that I thought I knew what I was getting into only to be pleasantly surprised by its amazing writing, beautiful art design, and intriguing story. Minor spoilers ahead. I struggle with Schizoaffective disorder, and though by the end of the game I didnt believe the stories were lies, during the beginning they screamed of some of the delusions Ive had in the past and yet the game presents them is such a genuine way that this game couldve been about mental illness if it wanted to. It speaks specifically to me because from one perspective the curse that the family has could be mental illness, but by the end of the game, I felt the game pushes you to believe that the Finch family just lives in a fantastical world. Easily the best game I played this year, and I honestly didn't expect it to be my top game of 2017 until I played it.

If you read this, thanks for your time. I know there a literally thousands of these things online. So thanks for giving mine a chance. If you want, leave a comment letting me know what you think of my list and also how objectively wrong I surely am.

p.s. I'm new to this blog thing so I dont know if I put this in the right place or not.
