Games I Have Played In 2016

Is this really my eighth list of games beaten in a given year here on Giant Bomb? Jeez, if we carry on at this rate there are going to be more of these lists than there are main-line Final Fantasy games!

Welcome, one and all, to my list of Games I Have Played In 2016. As always, for a game to qualify for this list, I need to beat it between January 1st and December 31st 2016. For a game to count as 'beaten', I need to have seen the end of its single-player campaign. Games with no discernible end are still eligible for the list if I spend a substantial amount of time with them through the year.

Alongside each game you'll find a wealth of information, including the following:

  • Platform - Unsurprisingly, this reveals the platform on which I played the game, as well as whether it's a standard physical purchase, or if I picked it up from a digital store.
  • Started - The date I began playing the game.
  • Finished - The date I reached the 'end' of the game's campaign, or the date I stopped playing it if it's a game with no discernible conclusion. For certain games, I might also document certain important milestones under this heading.
  • In Brief - A short summary of my time with the game, typically outlining why I chose to play it, what I liked and didn't like about it, and any notable moments I ended up having with it during my play-time.

Last year I beat a total of thirty-two games, one of my best efforts to date and not too far off my personal best of thirty-five in 2013. How will I fare this year? Let's find out!

In Brief - I picked up Axiom Verge in the PSN January sales following the positive reception it attracted on various Game of the Year lists and blogs. Having never played a proper 2D Metroidvania game before I wasn't really sure what to expect, but Axiom Verge definitely didn't disappoint. It's a ton of fun to play and constantly subverts the expectations it creates with each new inventory item. The controls are tight and responsive, and I loved the dirty 8-bit aesthetic too. I'm sure most people who played this had already played Super Metroid and viewed this as a sort of love letter to the genre, but from the perspective of a new player, it's done enough to make me want to dig into those old Metroid and Castlevania games at some point.

You just reminded me to create my list. What do you think the first game of 2016 will be for you?

@obsideondarman: Honestly, I've no idea. Right now I'm rushing to get through the HD remaster of Ratchet & Clank 2 to include it in my end-of-year recap, but there's a fair chance I might not beat it until we cross over into 2016. If I do manage to clear it in the next five days, I'm making decent progress through Pokémon Omega Ruby having reached the halfway point of its story, so I reckon that could be an early entry for next year.
