Games I Have Played In 2018

Hey there folks, and welcome to my list of Games I Have Played In 2018. Now in its tenth year, the Games I Have Played list is a tradition that I've been upholding since 2009, maintaining a detailed log of every video game that I finish within a given calendar year.

For a game to be included on this list, I must beat it between January 1st and December 31st 2018. A game qualifies as 'beaten' once I've seen the credits roll on its single-player campaign. Games with no discernible end may still qualify for inclusion on this list if I deem that I've spent enough time with them during the year - a decision that I'll make on a case-by-case basis.

Every entry will feature a few statistics alongside it, including:

  • Platform - The console on which I played the game (and the specific release, if it's worth noting)
  • Date(s) Beaten - The date (or dates) on which completion markers were achieved within the calendar year.
  • Hour Count - The amount of time I spent with the game. If no in-game clock exists, then I'll make a rough estimate.
  • In a Nutshell - A one-sentence summary of my opinions on the game.
  • Star Rating - An overall rating out of five stars denoting the game's quality, where one star is terrible and five stars is excellent.

The last couple of years have fluctuated wildly in terms of my gaming output. Two years ago, in 2016, I was only able to finish twelve video games, an all-time low for me. Last year I ended up at completely the other end of the spectrum, blasting through fifty individual games and setting a new personal best, trouncing the previous record of thirty-four games beaten in 2013. For 2018, I'd like to land somewhere in the middle with around thirty games beaten. Will I reach that target? I guess time will tell...

In a Nutshell - inFamous 2 is a fantastic iterative improvement over the first game in the series, but although the morality system serves the gameplay well, I felt its relevance to the story was somewhat questionable this time around.

  • Platform - PlayStation 3

    Dates(s) Beaten - Credits rolled April 29th

    Hour Count - Eleven hours

In a Nutshell - God of War: Ascension is by far the weakest of Kratos' adventures, sacrificing the series' fantastic fluid gameplay to accommodate an unnecessary multiplayer mode.

    Dates(s) Beaten - Credits rolled May 13th

    Hour Count - Eleven hours

In a Nutshell - Tools of Destruction is a solid transition title for Insomniac's lombax-robot duo, but lacks the certain "je ne sais quoi" that made the original trilogy so fantastic.

    Hour Count - Three hours

In a Nutshell - Titan Souls is a mechanically sound two-dimensional amalgamation of the Shadow of the Colossus and Dark Souls formulae, but its lack of personality and meaningful world-building make it a pretty hollow experience.

    Hour Count - Eighteen hours

In a Nutshell - The second LEGO Harry Potter game provides much the same experience as its forebear, and consequently suffers from much the same issue with regards to its grindy collect-a-thon elements.

  • Platform - Xbox 360

    Date(s) Beaten - Credits rolled June 17th

    Hour Count - Twenty-five hours

In a Nutshell - Saints Row has all the hallmarks of an early-generation title, and although the game itself is solid, its many rough edges make it difficult to recommend in 2018.

  • Platform - PlayStation 4

    Date(s) Beaten - Credits rolled July 7th

Hour Count - Forty to fifty

In a Nutshell - God of War's 2018 reboot achieves the near-impossible by making Kratos a relatable character over the course of an unforgettable journey, all while providing a more intimate and intense combat experience without sacrificing the series' hallmark sense of scale.

    Star Rating - ****

  • Platform - Xbox 360

    Date(s) Beaten - Credits rolled September 8th

    Hour Count - Twenty-seven hours

In a Nutshell - It takes a very long time to get going, and a lot of its optional content feels like pointless busywork, but the core story experience of Assassin's Creed III was enjoyable enough to justify my delayed return to the franchise.
