Just fired up FFT:War of the Lions and looking through the tutorial, it has to be one of the deepest and longest tutorials Ive seen in a while. It is doing a good job of explaining the mechanics so far, and the quick help function seems useful.

Disgaea seems kinda wacky, which has me somewhat interested, along with the item world mechanic. Should I just start with the latest one, or do I need to play the earlier ones first?

Thanks for all the input, you guys are the best! :) Interesting, I never really thought about XCom as an SRPG. just a plain old TBS game, but thinking about it more I guess it does qualify.

I just remembered I also own FFT:War of the Lions via PS+. Not sure how good it is but its free, so Ill check it out as well! :)

Hey guys...

Always been curious about the SRPG genre, but I've always been somewhat intimidated by the apparent complexity of the Disgaea series. Not sure if it mechanics are actually as complex as they seem tho, since Ive never played it. Ive heard nothing but wonderful things about Fire Emblem, and I like the art style of Bravely Default, but I dont own a 3DS. Last night I tried the demo of Rainbow Moon, and although I liked the basics something about the art style and sound design is very off putting. I also hear its very grindy in a not-good way.

Anyways, what would you guys recommend for someone who has never played an SRPG before? I own a PS3 and a Vita, so if its something with cross-buy, that would be a plus.

Anyone know if these prices will be good for digital versions? Would rather not fight the crowds at Gamestop if I can help it...

@joeyravn: Thanks for the info, that's great to hear! I have a GTX 660, so I think I should be ok from a GPU standpoint.

@alistercat: Thanks for the info on the controller! Its reassuring to hear those games work well with the 360 controller. That was a concern for me as well, but it seems like the games I am interested in playing don't make extensive use of motion controls. You are right, I wouldnt look to this as a replacement for the platform, just a way to allow me to play the couple games I am interested in.

You dudes are awesome! :D
