What a recommendation for Yakuza 0! I'll definitely need to give that a shot. However with Yakuza 4 and 5 languishing on my PS3's hard drive thanks to PS+, it feels weirdly wasteful to buy 0, y'know?

I also really liked the comparison between BotW and OG Zelda. I actually played quite a bit of Zelda 1 this year right after BotW and drew a similar, uh, link between the two. Funny how innovation can sometimes happen by looking backwards.

Anyway, great list Slag!

@xenturik: Thanks so much. I had a hard time encapsulating my experience with Zelda into such a short blurb. It wasn’t until I went back to it to play the latest DLC that I was able to realize what I love most about the game is the utter freedom it gives you. My GotY was super close between Mario and Zelda, and now that I’m writing this out I almost want them to switch places. But then again, I’d probably think the opposite tomorrow!

@slag: I might give PUBG a shot at some point, but I'm not that big of a fan of solo battle royale. And that's likely what I'd be forced to play seeing as I no one I know in real life who has has even heard of PUBG. I'll wait for a sale or trial.

I get your predicament with the Switch, especially considering you own a Wii U. I skipped out on the Wii U and 3DS, so I was able to rationalize the purchase as a way to catch up on Nintendo stuff (like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe). But yeah, in terms of dollars and cents Nintendo's value proposition is lacking compared to Sony or Microsoft. Like it's hard to justify spending money on games like Oxenfree on Switch when I can get it super sale on PSN or get it free on Games with Gold. And that doesn't even consider the fact that Nintendo first party games almost never go on sale, while I can pick up Horizon for like $25 six months after release.

@majormitch: Thanks! Hollow Knight is so good, and in any other year when Nintendo doesn’t drop two of the best games in years, it would be GotY. But alas, that honor will have to be reserved for Hollow Knight 2.

@slag: Thanks so much slag! I totally get you about the PUBG/Fortnite situation, and how preference is dictated by circumstance. Like for me, my gaming social group is centered around the PS4, so for us Fortnite is the only game in town. As for 50 v 50, I sincerely hope PUBG claps back and steals the mode. It’s not something you’ll stick with long term, but it’s a great diversion when the intensity of standard battle royale is too much.

As for the Switch, while I do recommend it, I only bought mine because I lucked into a deal that took $150 CAD off the purchase price. Despite it being a fantastic console, I still think you’re better off buying after the first price drop. But that’s just my standard advice for any new console.

@oprahtrain: I'm so glad I got it for $5 when Blockbuster went out of business. ;-)

I'm not sure if the guys mention it in the video, but you can totally put in your original discs for these games and play for free. I'm pretty sure you can get a Red Faction 2 disc for way cheaper than $15.

@sharkman: But isn’t the Christian thing to do is be the gracious person and do the right thing even when others don’t? Why engage in this tit for tat when you could lead by example? And for the record, I do try to watch my language around religious folks.

In the past I probably would have shaken my head and closed the tab when I saw the GB community yet again be obtuse about the small shitty things that make marginalized people feel unwelcome here. But screw that, what Dan did was immature at best and insensitive at worst. That does not make Dan a bad person, but going after people that take objection with the joke makes the community look ever more close minded.

@sharkman: I'm sure you meant well with your comment about people needing to lighten up, but maybe think about that for a second. On one hand we have people with names that sound amusing to westerners. On the other we have people who simply find those names funny. Is it really all that hard for the latter group to stop making and laughing at those jokes, and apologize when they occasionally err? Compare that to asking people who have heard these tired and dismissive jokes all their lives to swallow their hurt and "lighten up". It's asking a lot when there is such a small thing that the other side can do to compromise. Just my two cents.
