Teaching my sons about old school gaming.

Just recently purchased Mario Party 9 and my sons, ages 6 & 8 love it. I have owned & played the series since the original on the N64, but this is the first one that they've tried to play as they weren't old enough to understand the controls and rules of the others, so basically just my wife & I played them. I have to say this one is a lot simpler & I'm glad for that, as they wanted to try the 4th one on the Gamecube and it was still a bit tough for them. That said, I've also recently downloaded Super Mario RPG & Mega Man 9 to my Wii for my own enjoyment & to show them some great old school games that they've gotten a kick out of & now they love Mario & Mega Man and can't stop talking about the characters!

That's awesome, I hope to one day introduce my future kids to older games.

Probably best to not let them play Mega Man 9 for a while, lest they turn into tiny cynical rage machines.

Playing old school games with my daughter is probably my favorite thing to do on earth. We play a lot of Turbografx--Devil's Crush, Aero Blasters, and Dungeon Explorer mostly. Super Dodge Ball and Kirby's Adventure on the NES are a couple more she loves. Good times.

I actually purchased Mario Party 9 for me and my friends...when we decide to get inebriated... and it doesn't have the same feel as the others. The mini-games were very well made but just the radical changes such as being in a car made the game shitty. Sorry for derailing this topic, just a rant. I will stick with Mario Party 2, the pinnacle of the series, until I decide to grow up.

Did you by chance play Mega Man X5?

EDIT: I did that without the Falcon armor. And that guy talking is so boring.

If there is one thing every person can agree upon. Is that the Yellow Devil in Megaman 1 is an asshole.

Hugs!

I plan on getting a copy of the Mega Man anniversary collection for my GCN, but I don't think that select trick works anymore on that version! :-(

Here's a couple that I would suggest which kids will find engaging while also giving them a steeping in some of gaming's history:

  1. Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - I would play this over at my friend's house back in high school, and her brother and sister were around the age of your kids. They were completely enamored by how awesome it looked and how cool shooting from the barrels was.
  2. R.C. Pro-Am (NES) - It's racing. It's simple. It's fun as hell.
  3. Ducktales (NES) - Are you fucking kidding me? IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST DAMN THINGS ABOUT THE NES! Of COURSE you gotta get your kids to play it!
  4. Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2 (Genesis) - Probably one of THE most underrated games ever released for the Genesis...or in general. The game was fantastic, and it's hyper-colorful environment and characters make it highly appealing to children.
  5. Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past (SNES) - I know, it sounds weird. The idea of a kid playing a Zelda game seems a bit out there, but at the same time, WE were kids when we started playing it. Just think about it.
  6. Toe-Jam & Earl (Genesis) - You can go with either the original or Panic on Funkatron, but I would say the original solely because the sequel could be a little hard for kiddos. Nonetheless, it's nonsensical and funky as hell!

When I was 5 I was playing super mario 3, I never really got very far. Mostly because I had to turn the game off, and as you might know, there was no way to save the game back then. Although one time I got my self to world 8, I lost all my lives on the first level. But damn, that made me proud.
