Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

List items

  • South Park has been one of the most important pieces of media in my life. I basically grew up with this show. The funniest game of the year (Jazzpunk be damned) full of great references for true fans plus a serviceable combat system. This game was lined up to be such a disappointment, but it proved my fears so, so wrong.

  • I like games that are huge, and DA:I is the biggest game I played this year. I skipped DA:2, but the ways Inquisition Improves on Origins are legion. Fully voiced dialogue, interesting combat, a great evolving story, lots of areas to explore, the list goes on. This game deserves all the hype.

  • This was my first Wolfenstein game, and it was not what I expected. The story was engaging and I felt for the characters stuck in the horrible Nazi world. The scene in the prison was actually pulled off, despite some reservations I initially had. The guns felt great too; it is still a shooter.

  • The first match of Nidhogg I ever played was the fastest, most intense eight minutes of my life. Yeah, I wasn't popular enough to get invited to spin the bottle in middle school.

  • Kevin Spacey is awesome. Exo suits are awesome. What could go wrong? Nothing. This game even had a cool stealth sequence with a grappling hook.

  • I loved Horizon last generation, partially because it was in my home state of Colorado. Southern Europe is good too (psshh, whatever) and I am going to be playing this game for many months to come.

  • I didn't like this game as much as everyone else, but it was still fantastic. I knew that dying meant that an orc would get promoted, so I avoided death at all costs. I only died twice in this game. The cool revenge stuff I missed out on, but being able to clear out the ranks with the Batman combat still gets this game on my list.

  • This game was received tepidly, but I bought it for less than 20 bucks on a PSN sale. 20 dollars is the perfect price for this limited experience. The neon power fully upgraded with unlimited sprint made for some great moments near the endgame.

  • FIFA has to be on my list this year. It's my most played game. It has generated some of my most memorable moments of the year (Santi Cazorla top right from 30 yards, anyone?). If this game could record speech like NBA 2K, I would never have 10 men from yelling "That's bullshit" at my TV constantly while playing this game.

  • My list has only two indies, but This War of Mine had to be one of them. I heard about this game on Idle Thumbs, and the stories one had after playing this game are almost book-worthy. I don't really like how it is set in a siege, but plays more like a post apocalypse. It doesn't really align with firsthand accounts in places like Sarajevo. But, it makes you fret for these people caught in the worst situation. More games need to be like this.
