Clash of the Titans-Don't believe the hate

so I just saw Clash of the Titans. I never saw the original with Lawrence Olivier, so I have nothing to compare it to. I read reviews going in, thinking it will be utter shit and I was actually shocked by how much I liked it. Granted, it was not Grade A film, but it had its moments. The action was solid enough, and the sound wasn't bad to boot. I just feel like the movie didnt capitalize on a number of key ideas. I won't spoil anything, but if they added an extra 30 mins to the movie, I think it would have been a much better film overall.

Anyone seen it? What are your thoughts?

I thought the action scenes were great, but the whole film was pretty much Christian Propaganda.

Saying it is Christian propoganda is a bit of hyperbole dude.  They do change Greek gods to fit into the typical role of God and Satan and stuff like that so Christian audiences understand it, however.  That is a bit lame.

It might be easier to explain if you saw it. Think of Zeus as 'God' and Perseus as 'Jesus'.

The saviour rises up to face Hades 'Satan'. All the imagery they use with the Gods on Olympus is very Christian.
And the whole fight gets turned around so that it's Hades vs Zeus, or Satan vs God.

If they made Perseus a Carpenter rather than a fisherman it would have been very funny but to obvious.

If you think of it that way. Most movies can be seen as what you claim is Propaganda.

Ah. I just saw it as a way worst version of the original, and decided to vote with my dollars. Also did Perseus die at any point and resurrect? Because then I'd be more inclined to believe you.
...Also Hades is the villain? Weak.

Sam worthington just doesn't look like an action type of star to me.  But that Gemma Aterton girl who plays IO  is fucking hot as hell.

Well greek mythology and christian mythology have a ton of similarities already, mostly because the christian religion was designed to portray Jesus as a more supreme being than the Greek gods. For example Jesus, and by extention God, doesn't go around killing people randomly and doing stupid shit, makes the Christian faith seem more appealing. And for a more direct comparison, Jesus copies a lot of the various Greek god's abilities and famous stories, such as when Dionysus walked on water, or turned the ocean to wine.

So yeah, I haven't seen the movie yet, but the relationship between Greek and Christian mythos is actually much more closely linked than most people would suspect.

The action scenes with the Scorpions were pretty sweet.

Also, the transformer-like blue eyed dudes were pretty cool. And the Avatar-like Pegasus scenes were pretty sweet too.

@Meltac: no, but if they got Gerard Butler to play Perseus, it would have been a sweeter movie.

I thought the characters were pretty silly. Perseus has his friends die every thirty minutes of the movie it seems, and every time it happens, he's sad for about two seconds.

Not interested then :( I had hoped it was 300 in 3D, but with more monsters.

@sodiumCyclops:   That's pretty much the story of Perseus though - Hades used Perseus as a bargaining chip against Zeus while Perseus went through many trials for the favour of his father Zeus. The Gods playing a game with Human Lives using their 'Heroes' /'Champions'/Half-breed God/Humans is a fundamental theme of all Ancient Greek tales.  Many Grecian Tragedies work in the same way, from Medea and Elektra through to Oedipus and Homer's 'The Iliad'.  The problem really comes from the fact that generally people think of Hades as Hell in the Judeo/Christian sense when really Hades is the Underworld : the place where all human souls go after their vessels/bodies die.  Ancient Greek/Roman/Norse multi-deited religion did not not have a menacing context for Hell (Underworld) just as Heaven (Olympus) was not a place where humans could end up at all, it was only for Gods.  That's why the depiction of Hades often goes hand in hand with Judeo-Christian 'Hell' because if not it would involve having to give the audience another context entirely which would be lost on many and only understood by a small few.
