Games of the Generation 2006-2013 (Ps3/360/Wii/PC/Mobile/Psp/DS)

Games of the generation, in no particular order.

All notable for their own reasons, be them positive or negative.

Please note that I have not played all games ever created, so chances are, I will miss out on some games. Also, I'm human, so I have my own taste in games and it's likely that I'll lean in the direction of those genres. I am trying to be inclusive of all genres, but I know next to nothing in the ways of fighting, strategy, and racing games.

[Work In Progress]

List items

  • Beautiful. In so many ways.

    Pretty to look at.

    Pretty to listen to.

    Pretty to play.

But really, the combination of all these aspects is what draws out its true beauty; it's an experience that should feel broad and fragmented, but becomes so very personal when you fill the gaps with your own identity. An experience that gives to you as much as you give to it.

  • Was, for the longest time, the best Wii game

Still great fun to this day

  • Impressive world, technologically-speaking

Also notable for "fixing on post," to a pretty severe extent

  • The only 360 Kinect game that every kinect owner should have

    Made the Kinect seem promising

  • See "Diablo III"

  • See "SimCity"

  • Every time a numbered one of these comes out, so much shit happens.

    So many ups and downs.

Never really been my type of game, but regardless of how anyone feels, the words "Grand Theft Auto" represent us "gamer-types" in the eyes of the rest of the world

  • A game about ends that never manages to end the same way for any two people. There's some real meta shit going on with this game. I'm sure in a few decades we'll have it all figured out.

    TheEndisneverTheEndisneverTheEndisneverTheEnd

  • No 10 games were better than it that year.

    Probably not true, but whatever.

I was really fond of the way story is expressed through the controls themselves. It's a small implementation of this concept, but it's quite possibly the only time it's been done.

  • A game whose narrative is primarily expressed through environments.

Was originally gonna put Bioshock here, but I just think Gone Home does a better job

  • Some people swear the second is the only one worth playing.

    Some, the third.

Some have trouble going back to the third after they've played the fourth

The franchise does an amazing job bettering itself with each installment:

The second included an immense amount of content.

The third streamlined a lot of that content.

The fourth refined the open-world elements to make everything feel a lot more cohesive.

  • Made quite the impression on the direction UI design has headed.

    Also, great stomping.

  • Esports!

  • Xenoblade: Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower

Operation Rainfall brought noteworthy games to the West that never would've made it here without the campaigning.

Which would've been a shame considering how much people over here loved them.

Proof that our voices can be heard

  • One of the few games I consider to actually be mature

Also rather important in regards to piracy and drm.

We'll see how CD Projekt handles Witcher 3

  • This game has not been released at the time of this list's creation.

It's here 'cause it proved the power of crowdfunding.

    Kickstarter, man

  • A fantastic hardcore platformer with equally fantastic music

    Very important indie game

  • It's easy (and I mean EASY) to dismiss Call of Duty, nowadays. But I'm sure most won't deny just how important this title is. It was an early adopter of (and played a large role in the popularization in) the implementation of light RPG mechanics to build a layer of progression *gasps for air* in games that otherwise wouldn't have that

    Genre-defining control scheme

  • The counter-heavy and almost-magnetic combat makes it easy to pick up.

    You stay 'cause you're Batman

  • Regardless of how anyone feels about it, it's made a huge impression on so many indie games since. Open up Steam and click on the "New Releases" tab, and I promise you you'll find something Braid-Inspired.

  • It won the "Giant Bomb Community's Game of the Generation" award, so I don't really think I need to justify myself, here

  • While there are many reasons why this game should be up here, the biggest reason is its multi-player aspect.

Let us engage in jolly co-operation!

  • "Remember that Elder Scrolls game?

Let's make it so that ANYONE can play it!" is essentially the idea behind Skyrim.

And if that pisses you off, don't look at me, I'm more of a Morrowind guy

  • First core Street Fighter since when exactly..?

Seriously, I don't actually know, I'm not a fighting game guy.

But that said, even I know this game's a big deal.

  • Great showcase for online stuff that wasn't a bunch of people trying to kill each other...hopefully.

Provided a powerful set of creation tools that made people like me feel like idiots 'cause all we'd make was, like.. a ramp...

  • Let's Play Minecraft Ep132

Remember to Like, Favorite & Subscribe!

In all seriousness, this innocent little title drew a lot of attention towards the indie scene. While I've never played the game myself (I'm a Terraria man), if it weren't for this, lotsa games never would've gotten the attention they deserved-- some might not've even gotten made.

Led many games in the direction of creative expression through building. By which I mean, you'll make either a Nyan Cat or a penis, before going on Youtube to see all the crazy shit OTHER people made.

Thriving proof that some games are only as good as the community supporting it

Mod support's great, isn't it? (Even though the creator originally didn't want to support mods...)

  • Proof that Mario still has it.

I remember playing this for the first time.

My adoration for Super Mario World may still be unmatched in the way of platformers, but this came damn close

  • Very similar to Braid in a lot of ways, in its influence on indies.

Lots of indies have attempted to mimic this first person puzzle game, but very few can recapture that feeling of enlightenment when you just "get it"

  • Probably the first game based on what was a currently popular IP I have seen that was worth playing.

The way narrative paths diverge in this game also feels very natural, and is a triumph in the Telltales style of game design

  • Most of the time when I hear a game is very "Hollywood," it just sounds like a negative thing

Not the case with this game

  • Chose this game to represent the whole "Rogue-like" debate, which I so actively avoid

  • Initially, I intended to just choose one Quantic Dream game, but this is notable for different reasons.

The production value is much higher, and is indicative of much greater ambitions.

Also, I'm fairly certain people won't be forgetting the weird nude thing anytime soon, as it raised some strange and confusing legal questions. Something to consider as video games become more involved with big names

  • Quite possibly the only Point and Click game I've played that I wasn't clicking on everything because I was lost, but because I wanted to get lost in the experience

  • I saw this as a defining moment for Quantic Dream.

Yes, it is rather similar to Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit), but it was significantly grounded by comparison, which seems a lot more in the spirit of what I think Quantic Dream represents.

    (X) Jasssssooooooonnnnn

  • SAAAAYYY IT AIN'T SOOOOOOooOoOOO

  • Who doesn't love TF2?

  • Here it is: the Monster Hunter game with a thoughtful difficulty curve and is perfect for the unaware audience in the West...only it was never released here...

  • Never played it, but have listened to the soundtrack. Real rad sound design.

Some really interesting community interaction and reception, from my understanding

Interwebz drama. Severe enough to warrant the cancellation of a potential sequel

Re-highlighted the shittiness of the internet, and how easy it is to negatively affect others

  • Over the top Japanesey nonsense.

Is lovable as it is weird

  • Because they curse a lot.

But really, because of the immense production values.

I think I played about 2 hours, during which I looked at people's faces and ran somebody over and felt like it was money well spent (granted I bought it for about 10 bucks)

  • The Braid of horror games.

It seems like every horror game wants to be this game nowadays.

If you have a membership, just watch Spookin' with Scoops, and see how many titles harp on elements inspired by Amnesia

Proved that sound design can make a big difference for an indie game

  • I don't know if "the player can express themselves through combat" is something said in commentated gameplay trailers often, but it's certainly always sounded stupid to me.

Bastion, however, truly felt like it wanted the player to express themselves through combat. To the point where the narrator comments on your choice of weapons, in a very endearing manner.

Has some of the best sound design in a non-horror game I've seen

  • GOTY all years...

Here because it's kinda a big deal. Whether you like it or not

  • It's here to remind us that promises mean nothing. NOTHING!!!

    :(

  • Smart direction for sonic to go (back, that is).

Shame he didn't keep heading in that direction.

  • Still not entirely sure how a game can be so bad (as I haven't played it, myself). But even people I know who don't really like video games talk about this game like it's the antichrist

  • It certainly is a shame what happened with THQ

  • Unbelievable trailer

    Unbelievably mediocre gameplay

  • DS broke before I could buy this game.

Nice art style, and so many people swear by this game, it's scary

  • As in "it took forever to finally be released!"

    Am I right guys!? Right..?

Significant enough for No More Heroes to make fun of it, which has been pretty much my metric for whether or not a game has made it on this list so far
