2013 Finished Game List

List items

  • January - PC -

For whatever reason, I love these games. I got the entire stack a while back and decided to start working my way through them. It's not a great game, slow, obtuse, not all that well done in general, but I still enjoy them. I have a weird thing about Sherlock Holmes though, so I'll put up with a lot.

  • January - PC -

This game is great. I got super addicted for a minute, and played the crap out of it. Ended with a top score of 11 Million something, but I'll probably keep messing with it, it's a great quick game while your waiting around for stuff to compile.

  • January - PC

Going through the list of Holmes games... This is is an utter dog turd.

It re-uses all of the same environments from The Silver Earring, and a bunch of puzzles from other Holmes games as well,

but put's them into one of those pixel hunt find the item games. Do not play.

  • January - 360

Finally done... I beat the Dragon a few days ago, and finished up the Everfall stuff last night. I started up a new game plus, but I'm going to hold off before jumping back in... I really want to check out the Ur-Dragon fight, it sounds like a neat idea, at least.

There are a ton of problems and frustrations with Dragon's Dogma, mostly associated with the quests taking you back and forth across the same path about a million times, but there is also something special about it that pulled me through. There are some really good ideas here that get bogged down in a bunch of dumb mechanical things that might easily be streamlined. I'm stoked it appears to have done well enough for them to get another crack at it.

  • February - PC -

I had started this on the 360, but picked up the full season for the PC later. So much has already been said that I'd probably just be repeating thins at this point, but I really enjoyed it... except for the part where it was a buggy pile. Supper shitty frame rate, often in parts where time is critical, lost my saves twice, audio sync issues, and being completely unable to play it one point until messing with the compatibility settings despite it's having started up fine previously. It's a testament to how much the story sucked me in I guess, because I still want more.

  • February - PS3

Hands down, the best thing I have played in a really long time. It's not ground breaking as far as JRPG stories go, but there is a level of polish and a sense of wonder to the whole thing that captured me instantly. I dig pretty much everything about it... It looks and plays great, the combat is fun, and the world they've built is chock full of places to explore.

I finished the main story at about 60 hours or so and I'm still messing around with post-game bosses, evolving and catching more familiars, and some alchemy stuff. If you like classic RPG's and Pokemon-esque team building, this game is a gift from on high.

  • February - PC

Basically, don't ever play this game. It's old, but that's no excuse for poor game design. The puzzles are really obtuse in most cases, and there is little to no feedback as to you have done the right thing. You end just walking around looking a bunch of places you have already been re-checking doors and whatnot that might just magically be open or usable even though they weren't earlier. Add a timer and instant fail states on most of the puzzles and you have a recipe for frustration

  • February - 360

Decent Castlevania-esque side scroller. The story was a bit heavy handed, but still interesting and the fighting system was engaging. Really impressive when you realize it was basically made by one

  • February - PC

A good idea, but I wasn't a fan of the execution. The story continually got in it's own way by trying to be funny and it really started to get to me by the end. Good effort, but not my bag.

  • March - PS3

I have a ton of new games to play, but I played Demon's souls instead. Had to start over with a new character since my saves seem to have been one of the things that I was unable to recover after my old PS3 died. I'm actually pretty close to getting the rest of the trophies now, might keep going and start messing with the world tendencies now.

  • March - PC

I loved the first one, and I love this one even more. Wierd, great looking, challenging, tons of leaderboards, basically all things I dig in games... If you could level up and collect loot I might not ever play anything else ever again.

  • March - PS3

Pretty darn good, I found the setting to be really interesting, and it plays great. It's was surprisingly gnarly, especially in the death scenes. The open exploration areas were my favorite part, there is a ton of stuff to find.

It started me thinking about a new Goonies game, or at least a game like this where you don't have to shoot 2000 dudes in the throat before it's over. I want the exploration, ruins, booby traps, and ancient secrets without the guns and mercenaries.

  • March - PS3

All that stuff that people said about this game being garbage? Totally true. It's basically not done yet... It's missing all the things you do to refine your game and make it good. Many of the animations look like action figures sliding across a table, AI is laughable, and it looks like they just tried to make it really dark hoping you wouldn't see how crappy it is.

Add to that the story makes little to no sense in the context of Aliens and you end up with a total train wreck. It's a bummer too, because there is still something inherently cool about walking through those environments with the motion tracker going and the sound of the plasma rifle fire, too bad they didn't do anything worthwhile with it.

  • March - PS3

I didn't like it very much to be honest. It felt slow and unpolished gameplay wise, and the story is a disjointed, almost incomprehensible mess. It jumps all over the place with almost no context for anything, super confusing as well as just not very interesting.

It also glitched out on me in weird ways a bunch of times... monsters spawning in walls so I couldn't kill them and move on, a big monster getting stuck in an invulnerable state, and doors not unlocking... it was enough so that whenever I got even a little bit stuck on a puzzle I would start to worry whether I just need to reload to make it work.

On the plus side, the set pieces were cool, I love all the giant mechanical stuff with moving parts everywhere. That stuff is great, it just didn't make up for how sloppy the rest of it was.

  • March - PS3

A neat little game. I loved the art style, and it made me laugh. The only bummer part is that you end up repeating the puzzles a bunch of times if you want to see all the characters get to the end. Each character has it's own puzzle area, separated by an in-between puzzle area for everyone. With 7 characters, and 3 playable at a time you end up going through those in-between areas a bunch of times.

  • April - PS3

Pretty fun, though getting chased by the cops every 5 seconds got a little tired. The online part is way fun, hopefully I'll get around to spending some time messing around there now that I have all the cars.

  • April - 360

Incredibly well put together and super fun to play, it scratched an itch I didn't really know was there. I haven't played a kind of classic strategy game like this in a while, and I had a blast. The story is the right amount of crazy, and the added layer of building up the relationships between the characters is one of those things I always get sucked into. The difficulty really spikes towards the end, especially if your trying to keep people alive, but in a good / challenging way. Highly recommended.

  • April - 360

I've never been a GTA fan, and I was a little leery starting this up that I would get turned off in the same way as with GTA, but I ended up really enjoying it. The fighting mechanic is way more fun than shooting, and I dug the whole Hong Kong action movie vibe. I think my problem with GTA is all the juvenile attempts at humor that surround it, instead of any of the radio ads or signs or whatever being funny to me, they make me want to stop playing... Which is weird because I loved Saints Row 3. Maybe it's the absurdist nature of Saint's Row in general that makes the dumb jokes more palatable...

Anyway, I liked the vibe in Sleeping Dogs, it worked way for me.

  • April - PS3

Super fun! Think Metroid with a decent fighting system as opposed to guns and missiles. The fighting and combo system is deep enough to be fun, but not too crazy, the platforming and world is fun and can be challenging, and it has a great art style and music. I could have done without the lame internet memes all over the place, but other than that, just right for me.

  • May - 360

Almost the exact same game as the original. Fun at first, but gets old real quick. I loved the first act of Dead Island, but it gets progressively worse as it goes on... This one is pretty much the same thing.

  • May - PC

Decent style and a good look, hampered by some of the most frustrating controls I've dealt with quite a while. It has a real Flashback or Out Of This World vibe, which is cool, but not enough to make up for the controller throwing levels of aggravation caused by numerous instant deaths from crappy control.

  • June - PC

Not as scary or innovative as Bioshock, but still on another level compared to most other games out there. My only problem with it is that, to me, they seem to have outgrown games as a medium to tell their stories. The gamey parts feel REALLY gamey in contrast to some of the other stuff they seem to be trying to do.

Anyway, I loved the world, and zipping around on the skylines is way fun.

  • June - PS3

One of the most frustrating things I've played in a while, and I've really liked AC games in the past. They've been on a downward spiral since Brotherhood, and this one is even worse. Lot's of dumb bugs, way too many instant fail missions, the main character is an unlikable douche, and it's constantly stopping you so it can load a cutscene. The first part of the game is basically nothing but you walking five feet, waiting for a cutscene to load and unload, walk another two feet, wait for another cutscene to loand and unload, over and over. Lame.

On the plus side, the boat missions were mostly cool, and it's still interesting for me to cruise around the awesome detailed world they build, bit this one is a stinker over all.

  • June - PS3

Another frustrating game... I feel like I was sold a bill of goods here. It started out great, then the first area you walk into is just an arena littered with rectangles for you to take cover behind. I found the constant fight encounters to be frustrating and mostly not necessary... I was also acutely aware of my having absolutely no control at all over the characters decisions or how the story played out, which has never rarely an issue for me. That's probably what they were going for, but for whatever reason it bugged me here.

It does some really cool stuff, but in the end just falls back on tired gameplay mechanics that aren't even done particularly well. Maybe my expectations were off, or even not possible, but I didn't like it.

  • June - PC

Fun arcadey shooter with a great narration driven story. The levels are quick and fun, basically shooting galleries, but what really makes this game is the way the story is told. The different levels are stories being told by an old gunslinger in a saloon. He narrates the whole time, kind of like in Bastion, but the cool part is when he mis-remembers or someone in the saloon calls bullshit on his story, and the levels change around you accordingly. Anyway, it's a neat idea and it's executed well. Totally worth the $15, especially since you get a bunch of arcade hi-score modes along with the story.

  • July - PC

Great game. Fun and challenging puzzles, a cool / trippy story, and a great look. It has this weird clay animation vibe... I'm an old man, so this comparison might not mean anything to a lot of you, but it felt like playing a Tool video.

    Anyway, highly recommended.

  • August - PC

Finished Bit.Trip Runner 2 on rather hard mode.

  • August - 360

Not great, but not terrible either... Better than Homecoming, but nowhere near as good as Shattered Memories. It had a decent story and was sufficiently freaky in some parts, but they kind of fell back on shoving a ton of enemies at you towards the end. If your some kind of Silent Hill purist, you'll probably hate this one though.

  • September - PS3

Still dumb in all the right ways. Normally I might be bummed that it was all in the same city, but it was so much fun to get around using super powers that it still felt like a whole new game. I laughed, I cried, I shot people with an alien abduction gun.

  • September - PC

A decent Diablo-like, totally worth the $15 bucks or whatever. It has a neat couple of side missions that are basically Diablo tower defense that I found to be really fun.

  • September - 3DS

Finished with the law ending. I have a save from a little ways back that I think will get me to the chaos ending, so I'll probably jump right back in on that or maybe a NG+. I honestly can't explain my love for these games, but being able to plug away at it on the DS while I'm watching TV with my wife is pretty much the best thing.

  • September - 360

Looks and plays fantastically, with style and character for days. The music based runner-style levels are my new favorite thing, and it has a metric ton of content too. New levels, old levels, challenges... so much stuff.

  • October - PC

I meant to run through again a while back, before Machine for Pigs came out, but got sidetracked. Still creepy as hell, even the second time.

  • October - PS3

Kind of heavy handed for my taste, but interesting nonetheless. The closest we'll get to "Apocalypse Now" in video game form, anyway.

  • October - Vita

I ended up really enjoying this. It kind of goes overboard on the exposition every once in a while, but the story is so bonkers they must have felt it was necessary. Wall to wall craziness in a unique package.

  • October - PS3

    Girl Sobbing: The Video Game

  • November - PSVITA

My 4th time through P4, and first through Golden. Basically teh best video game of all time, if you ask me. The changes are really smart for people who have already played P4, though Chie's voice threw me off for as bit. I feel like it might be easy to cheat yourself out of a bit of the experience, using easy modes and such, if this is your first time through, but not everyone likes to grind, so I can see this being very appealing to peoepl who don't cara about that side.

Time for NG+ so I can see the new extra dungeon and bosses!

  • November - PC

A super derivative God of War clone, but it has the best / dumbest style. It knows what it is, and kind of goes for it. I ended up enjoying it, despite numerous annoying problems. I new it was a winner when the dude yelled "AW, Sleet! Sleet! Sleet!" when you throw the ice magic.

  • December - PS4

I've been kind of addicted to Resogun, in teh same way I couldn't put down Super Stardust. It took me a bit to get a full run, mostly because I restart a lot trying to keep my multiplier, but I finally did it. Ended with 111 Million and some change.

  • December - PC

Fantastic game, kind of Mr. Driller meets Metroid

  • December - PC

Finishing out the year the way I started, with SH games. I actually started this one way back, but got stuck on a puzzle and sidetracked. This is the best out of the 4 or 5 I've played this year. Not as good as SH .vs Jack the Ripper or as awesome and crazy as The Awakened, but still fun. Now to finally start the newest one...

  • December - PC

Not that you can finish it, really, but I'm done with it at least. I liked it a lot, a good mix being really clever and really dumb, and it never crosses over into taking itself to seriously.
