Completed Games - 2014 Edition

List items

  • Finished with all but the hardcore collection achievements. Was a lot of fun, gorgeous, and in places, pretty challenging. The last, optional, stage took me about 2 solid hours to complete.

  • I loved this game. It surprised me how sweet it could be without making me nauseous. The ending was particularly fantastic, and really makes the player's connection to Iota (or Atoi) really something beautiful. This is also the first game I have ever platinumed on the Playstation side of things - that's how much I didn't want it to be over. Also, that fucking soundtrack.

  • This ended much stronger than it started. A nice, quick romp, and it's gorgeous to look at.

  • I was completely taken with this. Having not seen anything previously, that opening level just blew my mind. The kids really liked it too.

  • Surprisingly great little indie title that mashes dig-dug / mr driller with metroid / rpg progression. Enjoyed the hell out of it.

  • I know I am super late to this. I played about 25% on the 360 at launch and was like 'oh cool 3d mechanic, indie puzzle platformer' and fell off. Going back to it this year, it reminded me of what it was like to get a new game as an eight year old. It is so densely packed with secrets and crazy bullshit it's incredible. I had a notepad with pages of crazy notes all over it. I won't detail any of it here on the off chance that you haven't played it through to 200% completion, but oh my god. Legitimately one of the greatest video games in recent memory.

  • Destiny plays great but has so many problems it's difficult for me to boot it up anymore. Despite having a pretty great time with it, it's super disappointing. I think I'm done with it until the next big content drop.

  • Good times. Surprising how well it plays on a console. I still go back and dabble every so often. I'm at Torment 3 and generally just group with randoms.

  • This was as good as everyone said it was. I played it on normal and had a great experience. I need to go back and finish the Left Behind DLC (which is also extremely good). Grounded mode (no hud, no sound-vision, limited resources, ultra-hard) might be a fun over the holidays.

  • Deceptively complex Defender-Like. Love the crazy voxel bullshit. I want to clear up a few more trophies with this one.

  • Vlambeer's amazing 2D dog fighting game. The dynamic soundtrack thing (the main theme gets remixed based on which 3 plane parts you take into the battle) is fucking awesome. Finished all challenges, but I still play this every week.

  • Super weird dungeon crawler / brawler with completely fucking over the top female character 'designs' and RPG hooks. Combat is actually pretty satisfying, though.

  • Completed this with Oscar, too. It's by far the best of these Lego games. Also, flying around the open world city as Iron Man really highlighted the fact that there has never been a great Iron Man videogame. What the fuck?

  • Played through this with Oscar a few weeks ago. Still charming as shit. I'm also at a complete loss as to why there isn't a sequel or remake on the Vita.

  • I enjoyed this in a summer blockbuster movie kind of way. Not spectacular, but pretty entertaining.

  • I played the fuck out of this in December last year, but put it down for whatever reason before actually finishing it. I love this game a lot. It has some really prominent flaws, and it's incredibly cheap sometimes, but there's something endearing and weird about it that I love. I've completed everything bar the last 2 Avalon Pacts, which are multiplayer balanced side missions. I'll probably attack them once I get Soul Sacrifice Delta, which is a massive content update released as a separate game (which is kind of shitty, but hey).

  • This one hit me pretty hard, and I was not expecting it. The last 20 minutes of the game were almost too much. Totally worth it - it'll only take you 2 or 3 hours. Avoid spoilers at all costs.

Having said that, the control scheme, while novel, was a constant battle for me. Every time the brothers ended up on the side of the screen that was opposite their thumbstick, my brain just stopped working.

  • I tried Uncharted 3 a while ago and found the combat to be really frustrating, but in the Vita game I really liked the gyro-assist, and because of that I kind of enjoyed myself a lot. Going to go back to the PS3 games now, just for the spectacle and the characters.

Also, sometimes you forget you're playing a handheld game with this one. Impressive shit.

  • Having recently finished the first book, and hearing that the first game follows it's story beats pretty dead on, I jumped into the sequel last week, and have been obsessed with it since. It's definitely got a whole slew of technical issues, but the world is so beautifully realised I just want to stay in there forever.

I had a lot of flashbacks to that first Riddick game on XBox - surveying a room, shooting out lights, picking enemies off one by one. The world of Metro lends itself to that kind of gameplay perfectly. I found myself really dreading any level that took place on the surface - the time-pressure of your air filters combined with combat and trying to navigate the environment was almost too stressful at times, which is, I guess, the point.

I've finished the campaign, and I want to grab a few of the last achievements (specifically the 'get through the level without killing anyone stuff), and I'm seriously tempted to drop $5 on the Ranger mode DLC, which removes the HUD and limits resources even further.

  • I finished this on PC last year but bought it again because Hotline Miami. Played through it in one sitting and am now enjoying trying to A+ every level. The more you play it and pay attention to the details, the more fucked up it gets. One of my favourite games, period.

  • This is the first 'proper' fighting game I've played in years, and the story mode was a complete surprise to me. Pretty fantastic way to handle a single player mode in a fighting game. Good stuff!

  • Finished the PS4 version with 3 days of the year left. I mainlined the story, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Probably won't spend too much time doing the side stuff, though. Looking forward to story DLC.
