I have been using the Vortex Race 3 with Cherry MX Brown switches at work for the last six months or so and I love it. I could personally do without the function row, but I use them enough for work so I do not mind it.

Thank you guys for all of your feedback and confirming my suspicion! I will not be buying my new car from there, at least not on Monday.

I guess I am not sure when the tariffs go into effect. I am not even sure what specific tariff it is: I was under the impression that the US tariffs on Chinese goods does not include vehicles. The car I am looking at is Japanese, so it should not be impacted, right?

I was talking to the car dealer today (Saturday) about a car I have been looking at. The dealer was adamant that new car import tariffs were going to increase the price of the car significantly if I did not make a decision by end of business on Monday. Are these tariffs a real thing that will go into effect this soon, or is the dealer just trying to rush me into making a rash decision?

@thatonedudenick: That's exactly what I'm thinking too. A monitor should probably be used for 6+ years, so I can play at 60 fps until I upgrade my GPU again. If I really want a higher fps I can always down scale to 1080p.

Sorry for the late reply guys.

It's funny, reading the thread @alistercat made, I got the distinct sense that 1440p@60hz is the way to go, but the responses in here makes it seems like 1080p@144hz is the smart choice. So when I found a good deal on a G-Sync 1440p@144hz Dell S2716DG I took the plunge. That way I'd get the best of all worlds!

I don't see myself upgrading monitors anytime soon after this one, in my mind they have the same life expectancy as a TV. It should outlast several GPU cycles, so I might as well pay a bit more now to have a decent monitor in the future. I hope I didn't overthink all of this stuff and that I didn't make a rash decision. I was already eying the GTX 1070so I'll at least get some use of the display.

I guess I should've mentioned that I mostly play single player games, rarely any multiplayer. In that sense I suppose I do t necessarily need the fast refresh rate.

@giantstalker: Right now I'm using a 1650x900 60hz monitor so even 1080p is a step up. Considering that we're headed towards 4k, a real solid monitor that can display above 60hz sounds like a sound investment, especially with G-Sync. I do wonder though, while you may not be able to run games at full blast right now, when you upgrade your GPU in a couple of years, would it not benefit you more to have a 1440P 144hz monitor as opposed to a 1080p one?

Happy Labour Day weekend Giantbomb community!

It's come to the point where I need to upgrade my monitor and GPU. I've been looking to get a GTX 1070 or 1060, but that really depends on the monitor I choose, and this is where my dilemma begins.

I'm not exactly sure whether I should get a 1080p 144hz monitor, 1440p 60hz or a 1440p 144hz monitor. Then there's always whether or not I should get G-Sync. My budget is around $400, but I'd be willing to pay more if it's really worth it. I'm under the impression that 1440p is the sweet spot for PC gaming right now, but would G-Sync and 144hz offset that to the point where 1080p makes more sense?

I've found a couple of monitors in each category that I'm considering:

1080p 144hz G-Sync: Acer XB241H https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB241H-bmipr-1920x1080/dp/B01C05C1OK

1440p 60hz: Asus G257HU https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00QS0AKVK/ref=psdcmw_1292115011_t2_B00JB6HCIC

1440p 144hz: Acer XG270HU https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00VRCLHYS/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1473010245&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Acer+270HU

So here are my questions: are these monitors good alternatives given my price range? Are there other better monitors that I should consider? Is G-Sync worth the extra investment?

Thank you in advance!

This was a pretty amazing read. I remember being stoked for Shadow of Chernobyl but I never completed it due to the weirdness of that game. Reading this makes me want to try out Call of Pripyat with all of its mods.
