Dude, where's the boss battles?

I was lurking in the gb forums and saw some random topic about boss battles. I started to think about some of the awesome boss battles I've done, which then lead to the realization that boss battles are either not in most games or are insignificant. Think about it - where are all the memorable ones? Even if boss battles still exist in most games, they aren't as much a part of games as they used to be. When's the last time you beat a game when your friend beat it and you and they we're all like "Dude, Dark Matter was sooo epic, especially with the whole space setting and you get to fight him WITH Gooey!!! OMG!"

I miss that...

if I'm not mistaken wasn't those boss battles just..Shadow of the Colossus wrapped in pretty new foil?  "
They had a much more linear structure to them, there was only ever one way to climb them. Also LoS did have other bosses, the actual lords of shadow for instance, but most of them were fought in the same way; Attack, dodge, attack, block a weak attack to build up focus meter, attack, dodge.

There were some variation in there, like one that would use weapons or food in the environment, or another that you had to set a trap for, but mostly they were fought the same as regular enemies.

Bayonetta boss battles, Okami boss battles.  Both are excellent and rather differently styled.

So few boss battles employ much in the way of strategical thinking.  Yes, Craw from Borderlands is one that doesn't really use any strategic thinking.  It's all run and gun.

I think this was one of the few reasons I enjoyed raiding in WoW.  The boss battles could be pretty epic, and even having a guide in front of you couldn't quite tell you how the strategies really went.  Some of those boss fights really made you feel like you accomplished something after you finally got through a boss encounter for the first time.

A game that comes to mind that had awesome boss battles was Ultimate Spiderman. I remember racing through that at the same time as my friend and we couldn't stop talking about all of the boss battles.

Treasure will always be the king of the boss battles seeing how 90% of all their games are nothing but boss battles.

I think my main problem is that final bosses these days feel anti-climactic. Maybe I got too used to cheesy RPGs where you'd fight like world destroying gods and the embodiment of evil or something, but they don't feel as crazy as they used to.

Then again, I hate it when they take games where you mow down thousands of henchmen in some modern setting, then when you get to their leader, there's some stupid and arbitrary reason you can't kill them in one headshot like the rest of his gang.

Vanquish had some really fun "boss" battles.
I also REALLY enjoyed PixelJunk Shooter 2's Boss Battles.

Oh, oh, Lost Planet 2 has some spectacular boss fights.
