Hold on'a sec..... We need to upgrade some hardware.... the 360 has been out for about 5 years now. The Kinect  just came out, which tells me that the Xbox 360 console won't get an upgrade for at least another two years. But dude, that system needs some more ram than it has, it takes 13 seconds to load even the dashboard sometimes. And its not like the Kinect is some great technology that will be big on 360 gaming (it sold well, but not what MS wanted... or even needed).  
 
This is how I see it: MS banked on the fact that Kinect would sell like crazy, a bunch of third parties would jump on board to develop for the the next 2 - 4 years, and then they'd celebrate with tea, crumpets and money. But, no.  
 
So what now? The Kinect is boned raskulls style...

the xbox 360 redesign is what that was suppose to be. Its never taken me 13 seconds to get to the dashboard.
 
The console overhaul is out the window now. Today is more of the incremental upgrade. the xbox os is what xbox systems will have for quite a while.
The same goes for sony. The ps3 has an upgraded version of the psp os as it is.

How do you know the Kinect isn't doing exactly what Microsoft wanted it to? How do you know a bunch of third parties aren't going to jump on board for the next 2-4 years? How do you know the Kinect is intended for this generation only? Who says it won't carry over to the next? "

The 360 Kinect is just a testbed for Kinect on the PC and the new version of Windows.

The fact that it's taking you 13 seconds to load the dashboard is due to your connection. It has to download the animated things for the dashboard like all the new pictures and videos for the new game promotions, different sales and info for upcoming games.

Hasn't the Kinect been selling pretty well? Like I only see that posted about every 2 days...

Also, I don't want to buy another damn console for a few more years.  I still haven't gotten around to picking up a PS3.

I'm pretty sure that neither Microsoft nor Sony are planning on launching new console hardware in the near future.  They both blew so much money launching the 360 and PS3 that they'd probably like to see a healthy return on their investments before going through it all again for another console launch cycle.

Kinect is selling well because a lot of nerds want to use it to make some sick app that has nothing to do with gaming so I don't expect a lot of third party games to make use of it as we hardcore gamers wanted besides the typical mini game collections and dancing/yoga/whatever sims. 
It uses a lot of memory and CPU time to do its wizardry, they removed the hardware optimizations to make it more cost effective and now is just a toy that you may get in an impulse buy. A future backward compatible iteration of the sensor with higher resolution and built-in processors should be released alongside the next Xbox so the original concept could be realized.
Kinect technology just wasn't ready to be used in this gen, it's like Sony 3D/ FullHD obsession, the ps3 specs are not high enough to dream about 3D gaming right now but at least it will help to make it mainstream later, with a large installbase of 3DTVs.
So yeah, Kinect is the inevitable failure to learn and introduce an improved version to use with the new Windows and the next Xbox.

what, another 2 years before PC games start hitting that do things that are impossible on this gen of consoles?  Real time ray tracing, large scale CFD in real time, soft-body physics.  Then we'll start seeing talk of new MS and Sony consoles.  Personally I'm in no hurry.  Sure we're going to see phones and tablets with NVidia Tegra 2 systems that are about as powerful as an Xbox360 this year .. but whatever.  Plenty of good games left in these systems.

You could just download more RAM...

8 million kinect owners and nothing to play but the 17 launch titles and a new kinect only game every month, with numerous kinect compatible games coming. microsoft really wanted this to sell well and get developers making games, i geuss that didnt happen...oh wait!

Kinect sold and will continue to sell extremely well (they're closing in on a 20% attach rate, which is insane.) Developers will jump on board as soon as they get back from Holiday and start making games for this Holiday and next. That means plans will be in place for Holiday '11, Holiday '12, and Holiday '13 (because, you know, sometimes games take time to make.) That means Microsoft can ride the Kinect for 3 more years.

I don't know what to tell you, buddy. Go into the options and set the system to launch straight into a game, disconnect it from the Internet, or empty your friends list. Otherwise you'll have to endure 13 seconds of pure hell every time you load the console.

8 Million units sold in 2 months is a failure? 15-20% attach rate for a console addon at $150 is "kinda pathetic?" I'm not sure if folks are looking at it right.

Analysts are floored by Kinect's sales. Sony is quite pleased with the 4 million or so Moves they sold (as they should be,) yet Microsoft blew them out of the water. Failure is far from the wrong word for both companies. Motion control is here.

The only reason the 360 sometimes takes a long time to start up is because it's connecting to the internet and displaying all your data and store info.  The PS3 is quicker because it doesn't automatically connect you to the store, which is arguably a better idea but it's nice that the 360 experience is seamless once booted up. 
 
And uh.. 8 million Kinect's sold since November isn't doing well?  It's double what the Move has shipped and that's considering it has practically no games.  You can bet third party studio's will now be jumping all over the fact Kinect has sold so well and will be trying to take advantage of the large audience.  If they can get some decent games going for the thing, they have nothing to worry about at all.  I'm not sure what kind of fantasy land you're living in.

as a tech nut, i'd love to see a new console with better game load times and moar polygonz(!!11!). 
but i'm also realistic in that i can see how its really not worth to bring out a new console just for that.
