85 Games of 2019 I Wish I Played

I played a grand total of three games that came out in 2019 that wasn't something I could get my hands on for free. Four if you include sitting on the couch yelling at my sister while she played Untitled Goose Game. It's been a tight year on the 'ol wallet and stress/depression/anxiety didn't really allow me to play the games I did have anyway.

But if I could do it over again? With unlimited time, no responsibilities, and access to every game? These would be the games I would go back to.

UPDATE: Added ~~a few~~ FIFTEEN omissions that could not be ignored.

2. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Gonna be waiting a lot longer for this due to wanting to play with an actual plethora of gay relationship options.

3. Judgment

I have so many Yakuza games to play first. So many.
4. Fantasy Strike

Fighting game I wanted to play most from 2019, but never got to.
5. Slay the Spire

Now that it's out of early access and it's on the Switch? GIMME!
You know... once a sale comes around...
6. Dragon Quest Builders 2

I really want to play a Minecraft-esque game with more direction because Minecraft bores me. A healthy dash of classic Dragon Quest monsters and tropes is very enticing.
7. Away: Journey to the Unexpected

The animation in this game blows my mind. I don't care if it ends up being mediocre or even bad, if I get to experience that art first hand, that's a worthwhile experience right there.
8. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The From Soft souls-like-esque game that I want to play the least (and I already have a few of them to go through still).
Doesn't mean I don't want to play it.
9. Code Vein

fuck me up, anime dark souls
10. Jenny LeClue: Detectivu

The most adorable murder mystery.
12. Daemon X Machina

A friend of mine has been singing this game's praises since the first demo and I doubt he'd allow me to skip over it.
13. Devil May Cry 5

I want my devil trigger pulled.
14. Dicey Dungeons

I will play anything this man makes.
It helps when this game looks sick af.
15. AI: The Somnium Files

If there was a #2 on this list, this would be it.
I will follow Uchikoshi to the ends of the earth.
16. Luigi's Mansion 3

Is Gooigi a soup?
17. Ape Out

Like every "feature" of this game just makes it more rad af.
Gorilla slaughtering his captors as he escapes a lab? rad
Maze like randomized levels that with an emphasis on survival over combat? Rad
All percussion jazz soundtrack that reacts to your playstyle and changes with each level? RAD
Saul Bass-esque minimalist art style? RAD AF
18. Sayonara Wild Hearts

Be still, my wild heart.
It looks like a helluva ride.
19. Lost Ember

H*ck yeah wolf adventure.
20. What the Golf?

I refuse to watch others play this. I need to know what the golf for myself.
21. Afterparty

I wanted to be excited for Oxenfree, but the premise never interested me. Afterparty is a much stronger hook.
22. Baba Is You

I would very much like to be Baba.
23. Pokémon Sword/Shield

Dexit is the most groan inducing nontroversy of the year.
24. My Time at Portia

Not quite as enticing as Story of Seasons or Stardew Valley, but still would love to check it out.

Maybe in a while, crocodile.

26. Sea of Solitude

Maybe when my own mental health is less of a problem I can play another game that seems like a metaphor for it.

I dig the look of this game a whooole bunch.

One day the Etrian Odyssey faucet will be turned off and I will cry tears of joy for I will actually have time to play all of them.

This is a game I want to watch my girlfriend who is way better at rhythm games play.

I lied. I have played this game. I got it from the library.
And then my Switch joycon's drift made everything unplayable.

I have like 700 hours of JRPG's to play until I can play this.

In all honesty, I think I would bounce off of this pretty hard. But I still want the experience of bouncing off of it, if that makes sense.

Another game to convince my gf to play.

It's whole aesthetic is made basically for me.
48. Forager

I should never have watch that let's play. Now I am itching to play it and make those numbers go up, make things efficient.
49. Sparklite

Another game that doesn't look amazing, but has heart.
50. Overland

Must. Protect. All. Dogs.
51. Children of Morta

I wanted to not like it due to the grimdark aesthetic, but everything I've heard of it makes me want to overlook that.

Such a weird crossover.
Weirder still that it got localized.

It has some cool ideas for the subgenre.

This game doesn't look like a lot of people will like it despite being an obvious riff on Darkest Dungeon, but it's hitting a lot of the right notes for me.

This game isn't even out yet lol
58. Arise: A Simple Story

The great Kotaku review for it sold me.

It's criminal that the ridiculously overworked Pokemon team put out a new original game for the first time in years and everyone overlooked it.
60. Super Mario Maker 2

How the fucking shit did it take me this long in the list to remember this came out this year? I just watched a video on it 3 hours ago.
61. Disco Elysium

When this game was launching I saw that "what kind of cop are you?" and peaced the fuck out because fuck the cops.
But too many people I respect praise this game to ignore it.
Also the developers thanked Marx and Engels in their acceptance speech and like... respect.
62. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Okay I own this game from backing it, but I have a good reason for not playing it yet.
I have the Switch version.

The few streams of it look dope though. I imagine it'll be an even better experience the longer I wait to play it as it will end up being more fleshed out.

71. SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech

I much preferred the Heist to Dig, so jumping to a new genre again is way more exciting than a Dig 3.
72. Outer Wilds

I have no idea what this game is and I don't want to know all I know is I should play it or need to play it if those frothing at the mouth about it are to be believed.
73. ISLANDERS

I enjoy like a tenth of my time with any city building game, so stripping it to be more of a score-based puzzle game than a sim is a-ok with me.

I love these little expansions, but I haven't played much of them because I have Shovel Knight on the Wii U.
