I'm interested in jumping into this as it'd be great to have some duders to chill with. However i'm in the EU and changing the server to the US-Mega server prompts for a re-install which makes my already full SSD cry a small bit. I'm @brightzide if I can swing into the guild from here or if there is an EU get-together?

I'm from EU and I'm playing on the NA server and I'm sure most other people are too, this is usually the case on this site unless there is a region lock. The community of people who like MMOs on this site is not really large enough to support that. With everyone in a region being on the same server I haven't really had issues finding people online at late night or early morning US time which can be an issue in some MMOs.

I'd pretty much guessed that, so i'm heading over to the US mega-server. I assume my character doesn't transfer but that's no biggy, the main issue is getting around the asinine 60gb of free space just to check the install so I can log on.

Been enjoying the previous betas a lot more than I thought, if you're on the fence or open minded about it, give it a shot.

If/when this gets to the Elite 4 I think the internet is going to stop and it'll be the most amazing thing we have ever seen.

I'm not entirely convinced they'll make it past the safari zone without divine intervention.

The creator has said while he is willing to let them try Safari Zone that he is willing to remove the step counter if it proves impossible

Thats what I was referring to with the divine intervention. It would be a bummer if it comes to that, but with the number of mental disorders Red hosts the odds are against it heavily.

Also people forget about twitch lag when making inputs. Probably spend 300 steps just dancing around the HM.

It's been a long time but how many steps do you need as a minimum to get there, how long (in steps) does it take to retry and does it count turning as stepping? Not directed at anyone, just musing.

There's a chance that given enough time that this could be accomplished due to dumb luck or just pure player force of will. I think the curator of this channel is doing a good job of leaving well enough alone now it's out there -- just how far and how long would the fickle internet hold onto the Safari Zone nightmare anyway? Interesting thoughts.

On a more relevant note... back at a pokécenter and the chat's exploded...

I don't really want to get into spoiler territory here but it's a standard story told fairly well. They hit the beats of the genre and use established tropes well enough to be a throw-back to the older style of games and I think they do so intentionally. It's a fine line between a nod and cheesy reference and it generally hits more than it misses, at least in my impression. That's not to say it does everything right, the story can be pretty slow and the characters fit into nicely laid out templates for the most part, again there are a few nicely fleshed out parts and surprises, but on the whole it's nothing new and I think they know that -- it's just a refined JRPG from yesteryear made new.

That all said, they've done a great job refining the gameplay of the classic JRPG in terms of UI, interface and complexity to make it a pleasurable experience. I think the cliché use of the 'classic JRPG story' with tropes and all is another element of this that they're aware they're playing to, so all in all this is being given to us in parts nostalgia and in parts with modern sensibilities.

Oh yeah, aside from that rebuilding Norende stuff, that's seeing the free-to-pay-mobile stuff and adding it here with some odd context (even thought it is acknowledged in part in game, it still feels really tacked on). Not a fan of that bit.

I think it is very much so. At one point a character remarks "Why do the big ones always show up at the end".

Bravely Default is a game epitomising a genre (JRPG) from an set era and embracing it's own clichés in those games it's referring to. You can tell as much from the systems put in place that they know the game uses the grind from the established system but has it's own systems and options in place to make this as pleasurable as possible for those that want it.

Caveat: i'm right near the end of Chapter 5 so take that as you will.

I think this sounds like a great roguelikelike MMO where you're requiring other people to get items you can't and effectively outsourcing quests so players can request the aid of other players to 'grind' for them? This could effectively work for high level players giving low level player quests, with maybe a splattering of seeding from the developer.

As an example i'm thinking a warrior like player is able to clear dungeon of smashable skellys pretty easilly, but he needs a drop from the dungeon of resilient-yet-weak-to-magic hell spawns. Rather than risk his own neck doing that, cuz permadeath, he'll outsource the quest for someone that can. He found a great wand of moardamage or something so he puts that up for grabs with a modest gold reward. Someone picks it up and has X amount of time to do it (first come first served basis), if the guy who picked up the quest fails there is a consolation prize, let's say, but someone who completes it benefits 2 parties. If the quest isn't completed with X time, it's back on the market again.

Now the game then spreads out into multiple branches of speciality, everyone values his own mortality so wages rare drops they have acquired vs rewards they wish to reclaim. Ideally a player driven economy of 'shit i have' vs 'shit i want' is born and a good game is had by all. Of course this balance and drive is the real sticking point, but from Vigorousjammer's post, that is the game that I see.
