So Jeff already hinted at how insane the final character would be, yet when it would be revealed it would all make perfect sense, because Divekick y'all. And he wasn't wrong:
I was in the same boat as you, with the PS4 coming out later this year and all, although my old PS3 only needed some BD-laser cleaning. No YLOD occurred so I can't judge on repairing that, opening the innards is quite easy. Just have a couple of tabs open with vids showing how to disassemble and fix things like a stuck disc or applying new thermal paste.
If there's one piece of advice I can give, it would be to make sure to put back the little white disc holder in the drive, 'cause believe you me, your PS3 will make you understand they didn't put it in for show.
btw, I don't have any real tech experience so it certainly shouldn't be too much of a problem for you.
Konami just released a big title update for Metal Gear Solid 4 dubbed 2.0 which introduces Trophy support and a full install option... 4 years (!) after it's release even though it always ran pretty much flawless. But a patch to fix a broken 2012 release is beyond their resource pool. Priorities; get them.
@roomac: You might try firing up GT5, on the main menu there should be a Store icon. Try to activate it from there. I remember GT5 has some quirks when it comes to stuff like that.
@TheJohn: You can see what kind of cars you're about to face just before you load a race in A-spec or B-spec. There are three or four icons above the race you are about to enter, one for Entry requirements, another for your Garage and a third one that will show you the typical car selection the CPU drivers will use. CPU will hardly ever use Racing Soft tires and like Monosukoi said, they're make a huge difference. While money isn't as hard to come by with the latest patches installed, it's still a good idea not to tune your car too much, as it takes away any challenge. If you ever feel like trying your luck online, keep an eye out on the Giant Bomb Race Night sticky, we've been low on numbers and a little less active lately, but when we drive it's always good fun.
edit: if you want to know what tire-selection your opponents use, the only way to find out if by crashing into them and realize they probably are on Comforts and you aren't, or load up a replay and select a different driver on the right side. The left side of the screen will show their tire-selection. Their full tune setup and PP are never shown anywhere I believe.
With the team I'm in, I see most people's tab (the list with numbered ID's on the right in the main hub) have a blue color, some are black (that would be me) and the odd yellow one. Now, I know purple means they're on a sortie, it's just the blue/black/yellow thing that's driving me mad. I feel it should be obvious, I just can't see it.
