I find myself having the most similar opinions to Jeff. I really do not get what people see in Uncharted 2 that makes it somehow better than the others. I like the first one a lot as a simple treasure hunter type game, and Golden Abyss on Vita taps into that same vibe. Uncharted 4 really goes for the story and Lost Legacy shows how the series can change, but Uncharted 2 and 3 are easily the ones I'm least interested because they just do the first game again, but with some aspects ramped up, and other twists that hit more if you played all of them.
The love for Nier Automata is also fascinating to me. I like that game quite a bit, but it hasn't stuck with me like the original Nier did. Might be a time and place thing, or maybe the crew just had the experience with Automata that I did with OG Nier. I'm very curious how they will view the remake/remaster.
Also side note: I'm having a weird glitch with this video where it stops every six minutes and loads up the next episode as if I had finished watching. Anyone else experiencing this?
I've always been a game collector. Ever since I was very young, my collection ebbed and flowed, but I was always as meticulous as I could be and greatly enjoyed gobbling up cheap games from used stores. That hasn't changed into my adulthood, but I grant that it might. Anything's possible. But as someone who is passionate about games and likes writing about them/doing research, I inevitably find myself wishing I had this game or that game and the ability to play it right then. A lot of the time those games are older, obscure, and only on disc.
It's also worth talking about something GB has brought up here and there before - certain games just will not come back to the digital market. Or if they do, it won't be in the original format all the time. Will Capcom continue making the original version of Resident Evil available to people who want it? Or will they just lean on the HD version of the Remake from here on out? Or, Tony Hawk might be getting remastered, but for people who are specific fans of THSP3, that game is still untouched.
Plenty of JRPGs haven't been re-released either. I was a huge Xenosaga fan as a teenager and if I want to replay those, which I most likely will, I'll need a PS2 for those discs. Namco's already apparently shot down an HD re-release for the time being so that's the reality for that series for the time being. There's also stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga, which is almost lost to time as it is.
I've definitely started buying more digital games. There are good reasons to do so. However, at this point in time, I still see a lot of benefit for buying physically. It's something I always enjoyed - and as my ballooning PS3 collection shows, I don't think it'll end soon.
@dolphin_tequila: that's true. It's ten years old. But you can hear their love for those equally old RPGs even when they mention in passing. I don't expect long, drawn out rants about the game (which I could do, don't get me wrong), but it's a classic from the same era. It's a notable game in the history of the genre along with Mass Effect and Skyrim. As someone who reveres Monolith Soft as much as they revere Bioware, it's a weird experience.
Thanks for reading my email! It was much appreciated, as I had hoped.
Also: As someone who was blasting through Xenoblade Chronicles again on Swtich, I was disappointed to hear it get such dismissive remarks. I know everyone has different tastes and everything, but this is a classic made better by great QoL options and graphics that work with the art style instead of against it. It still holds up really well. I can talk about it like y'all discuss Mass Effect and Skyrim.
I've never played these games, so I would defer to you, Abby, if you don't think it's necessary...
but could you please spend some more time in the conversations? I think it's fun for the characters to talk about what happened and respond to it. It takes a little time but it makes the situation more realistic and fun. Plus sometimes it seems a bit necessary and not exploring those dialogue trees trips you up sometimes.
I like this series a lot! You and Alex have thrown around Carmen Sandiego and NCIS games but if you get the time, Ace Attorney would be fun to do too. Looking forward to next week!
