@do_the_manta_ray: That's really promising! I figured it would be a little more loose with how you spend your time at some point but it seems so close and they just tease you with freedom so often, I just wanted to run wild. I'm just glad that the story and character interactions are worth playing for.
So I posted something like this in another thread but I just got to the second dungeon it's starting to grate on me a little more: I really wish I had more time for diversions/social links. Hooooooly crap just let me do things! They give you this bounty of activities and then lock you into a bunch of story stuff for days on end. There's at least five things for you to do at home at night and I've maybe done 2 of them. Why are we so tired at night?
I'm hoping it opens up a little more but damn I'm like 15-18 hours in! We should be up and running! Anyway I love everything else about the game. That's really the only thing getting on my nerves. I'm really curious as to how this story ends up. Stakes are a little higher than 4 but probably not as high as 3 I'm guessing. I do love how they married the dungeon styles of 3 and 4 though.
@mezza:Exactly. The letting you loose and reigning you in thing is kinda jarring. You get that system message about spending your time freely (which is kinda when I feel like we're "off to the races" in Persona) and then there's still 4 or 5 things they stop you for after that. I just got to Memento for the first time and was honestly surprised that there was still that much left explained after the first palace. Maybe I've grown impatient, I dunno.
@redyoshi: You're absolutely right and that thought totally occurred to me. Maybe because it's another character instead of just narration from the void? The thing I like about Persona is that when I decide to hang out with someone it's me and them and then maybe I'll do something else on my own for the evening. Rent a DVD or something. But Morgana is always there. Study time? There's Morgana. Batting cage? Morgana's here. Making a little extra scratch at your job? Morganaaaaaaaa. I do like him otherwise. I'll get used to it.
@mezza: I think this one just feels a lot slower to start. It's a lot more "Hey let's stop for a sec while I teach you about this new system/mechanic!" It feels a little overbearing at times. Maybe because it's been so long since I played 4? Could just be my perception.
Don't get me wrong, I think this game is amazing and I'm having a blast so far, but the tempo is kinda stop and start.
Also Morgana. I like Morgana just fine. But, sometimes, I just want a little peace and quiet. Let me read my novel on the train. You're never alone. Ever.
I try not to fast travel in open world games. I'm not against doing it, but part of the appeal of an open world game is to see the open world, travel around it, soak in all its detail and gawk at all the vistas. I'm sure this is part of the reason why I rarely finish such games, but whenever I start fast traveling around to make things move along faster, I start to get annoyed with the game and with myself. I've been playing Skyrim recently and I started giving in to the temptation of fast traveling around and I found myself disliking things. Put the game down, picked it up later, didn't do any fast traveling, still love that game.
As I said, I'm not really against doing it. Keeping with my Skyrim example because that's what I'm playing - if I'm in Solitude and I know I need something that's in Whiterun, I'll fast travel to Whiterun, grab the thing, and fast travel back.
Yeah this is pretty much my MO too. I have a rule (that many games bake into their mechanics anyway) that I won't fast travel to a place if I haven't been there on foot first. Even after that I'll keep it to a minimum, but usually by hour 30 or so I wanna get things moving toward the endgame.
I think Brad has mentioned something like this, but I item horde in RPGs constantly. Five megalixers? I might neeeeed them at some point, you never know! I'll end up with 50-60 ethers at the end of a game cause everyone knows magic/MP restorative items are much rarer. Also, any item that causes damage (I dunno why but Rock Candy from Super Mario RPG is the one that comes to mind) will probably never get used. I want to use it, but I gotta save for that rainy day that never comes.
I had an NPC kinda snap back into place once, and rarely the found mineral notification will get stuck onscreen if it happens in the Tempest. That's about it though. Runs pretty well on my i5 4460/ 970.
