Best of 2015

What a season, what a season. 2015 has been a great year, and these are my favorite games of it. Some eagerly anticipated ones adorn this list, but there are also some completely out of left field surprises for me. If you'd said to me that in a year where sequels for Metal Gear Solid and The Witcher were coming out, I'd give my stamp of game of the year to a small, episodic title from dontnod, I'd say you were a lunatic. But here we are.

List items

  • Some problems with the dialogue, and a slightly disappointing ending can't take away from what I think is the most engaging narrative experience this year. A refreshing ernestness I don't see in a lot of games these days. A small classic.

  • The hunt for Ciri is the most engaging adventure Garalt has been on. Fantastic writing and characters, supported by great systems and mechanics, makes this essential on the top 3. I took me a while, but I eventually had to admit to myself that last year's winner, Dragon Age Inquisition, is a lesser when these two titans of RPGs a pitted against eachother. Your move, BioWare.

  • An unexpected return to form for TellTale. The funniest game I've played this year, and a number of years previous. I've never played beyond 3 hours of any Borderlands game, but this had me hooked, even with it's horrible release schedule.

  • The greatest multiplayer experience I've had in years. You never forget your first aerial goal, and 200 hours into this game, I still play it slavishly.

  • Such a super smart, dumb looking game. It's taught me all I can about space travel. If it's not scientifically accurate, I know nothing of space travel. But so much fun either way.

  • I never quite finished it, but the combat and depressing feel elevates it, and puts it at number 5. Fantastic, horrible world, few others can replicate.

  • Kind of a victim of my expectations. It plays like an absolute dream, and presents one of the greatest open worlds ever. But a lackluster story that never really hooked me, put it down at six. If I only was evaluating gameplay, it would be top 3, maybe number 1.

  • More of the same, and a bit more on top. Hugely enjoyable, but a bit samey.

  • Alot of MP fun, with some pronounced flaws.

  • So much more fun that it has any right to be. Surprise hit for me.
