I didn't realize how stupid "rangers utilize swords" sounded until I saw it written out in a review.
Between the pre-launch Dark Souls II-style guffawing about how brutally difficult the game would be ("we made it harder by giving early game enemies mind control"), reports of what seem like artificially low hit percentages, and huge technical issues, I'm still not sure if I'm going to pick this game up. I'm leaning more towards 'no' every day.
I feel like I understand now why Capcom didn't try to take any sort of legal action against one of their former employees still basically using their IP. Letting this game run its course naturally has been more damaging to Inafune's reputation than any attempt to stop it ever could have been.
@homelessbird: I wouldn't count on it. In terms of being really of being stubborn and unyielding on the platform of "just be normal", Paul is Dan turned up to 11.
If you think about it, Bob Ross is like early access for paintings. Showcasing and analyzing the creative process behind art has been a part of artistry for as long as people have been carving stick figures into rocks.
@amyggen: I'm not really criticizing his decision to not play Peace Walker, and I don't think that not having played every Metal Gear game infringes on his appreciation of the series in any way. In fact, I'd even argue that in this case, it's for the best that he didn't try and finish Peace Walker- I'd see it as even less genuine if he had forced himself to slog through something he didn't enjoy in pursuit of some hollow form of credibility.
In that context, though, it's kind of bizarre to see him supporting the hackeyed point of view that one's ability to evaluate or speak critically about an XBox One game is in some way compromised by a lack of experience with the NES library, or that it's in any way necessary to go back and "experience" outdated games today just for the sake of saying you did. He didn't really have an argument in favor, and his habits are almost the exact opposite of that, so it's strange that he went to bat for that of all things.
It's funny hearing Dan be the one to go to bat for "old school cred" and the need to go back and play old games so you know what you're talking about, because I'm up to the Peace Walker episode of Metal Gear Scanlon and... wow, he could really stand to practice what he preaches. That aside, it's hard to buy the importance of knowing your roots from the person with the narrowest frame of reference of the entire team.
Maybe it's one of those "I could fistfight a wolf" things he says that's not meant to be taken too seriously though.
