Games of 2012

Excitement is rated on a 5 point scale. Yes, 5 points, even though there is no game is getting that rating. That's why 2012 looks disappointing to me. For 2011 there were at least four games that I was crazy-hyped for. Not 2012. And a 1 does not mean not excited at all. It's just a tiny blip on my radar. Games that I'm not interested in at all are not on this list.

List items

  • VVVV 4/5 VVVV

Technically the Vita itself is the thing I'm most looking forward to, and might warrant a "5," but Bioshock is the game I'm most anticipating. Bioshock is one of the three greatest games this generation, and this world is the opposite of the depressing, morbid, horror-theme-like environments of Bioshock, which to me is a plus. I like color.

  • Almost a 5, but Darksiders did have a lot of problems. Still pretty bummed that this is my most-anticipated game of 2012, but still excited for more mature Zelda with way better gameplay, cooler art and a surprisingly good story. If comics fucked games, this would be its baby.

  • Hey, I've never played Prey. I know nothing about it.

I'D PLAY A GAME CALLED "ET 4: Worst Game Ever Dogshit" IF IT INVOLVED BEING A SPACE BOUNTY HUNTER WITH MIRROR'S EDGE-LIKE MOVES! PLEASE BE AWESOME PREY 2!

  • Vita's killer app, at least potentially. The touch, tilt and camera functionality, which is often so lame and forced in other games, is a perfect fit for LBP's quick, dynamic little games and levels that encourage variety in gameplay in just one level. You won't get sick of a back touchscreen if you're only using it for a few seconds to create platforms, or hate tilt if you're just doing it once to move water from one bucket to another.

And man, if my Vita will automatically download user-created levels, and if I can just leave the game on in stand-by for a good length of time, all so I don't have to spend three minutes just getting to the game like on PS3... *droooooool*

  • "Hot Shots, AGAIN!?" Well, for you, I guess. I, on the other hand, have only played the demo on PS3. ... About 250 times. I've gotten like a dozen holes in one, on that demo. I never bought the game because I knew I would only need one Hot Shots Golf, but wanted one with trophy support. Well, here it comes. On Vita. And damn, playing a golf game would work great on-the-go. As would a racing game. TRANSITION.

  • If not for VANQUISH, this would've been the biggest surprise of 2010. Looking forward to playing a sequel on a new, exciting platform, hopefully utilizing the device's strengths. But I'd be happy with just new courses, some small improvements to the game-design, and a new campaign. And I'm getting that. So... YAY!

  • I loathe Twisted Metal's serial-killer, horror-movie, gore-loving theme. I love Jaffe's ability to design fun games. This game looks fucking fun.

  • Hey, I like art! Hey... I like good gameplay? Can I haz great gameplay with my art, please, Mr. Ueda-san, sir? You pull that off, this is GOTY.

    ... I have my doubts.

  • This is the game people keep mentioning in regards to the Vita. And, considering the Vita is the thing I'm most looking forward to in 2012... finish the thought your damn self, you entitled prick.

  • This game looked pretty great at E3. So visually vibrant, great voice-acting, and a detailed outdoor environment. A less-than console port could ruin so much of what looks promising in this game though.

  • VVVV 3/5 VVVV

Lara is hot. ... Oh, and maybe they learned some stuff from Uncharted 2? And an open-world island, Metroid-style, is a genius idea. I do not want to shoot animals, though. Or see Lara tortured.

  • Have barely touched any SSX game, and this doesn't look amazing. But yo! I need a somewhat competent snowboarding game some time this generation, for fuck's sake!

  • Insomniac makes great weapons, and I adore Ratchet and Clank. A more cartoony art style and the humor of the trailer indicates this game might be a blend of Resistance and Ratchet. So that's 1 + 5 divided by 2.

  • Naughty Dog? 5. Enslaved Lead Artist? 5. Uncharted 2 team, including director? 6!

Zombies? Fuck. 3. I hate zombie games. HATE THEM. Please don't be zombies.

  • Oh man, this could be so awesome. RPGs can so easily bore me, but some South Park humor could go a long way. And the art actually lends itself REALLY WELL to 720p standards. Always happily surprised by how good standard cartoons look in HD.

  • Sigh... I really want to shove this down to the 2/5s with Diablo, as I think it's going to be the same ol' Halo shit; Warthog, Banshee Grunts, Elites, dual-wield, blahblahblah. But I really enjoyed Reach, so I'm sort of looking forward to this.

  • VVVV 2/5 VVVV

Clicking on stuff isn't super-fun. Hope I love it, but what I've seen so far doesn't have me chomping at the bit.

  • Also almost a 3, but I just don't know enough about what this game is. Really excited for the Vita though, and people are hyped for this. Always great when a game I'm lukewarm on sneaks up and surprises me.

  • PLATINUM GAMES IS MAKING AN ACTION GAME IN THE METAL GEAR UNIVERSE HOLY SH... oh. Oh, Kamiya isn't doing a damn thing? And it looks like Anarchy Reigns, and not Bayonetta? And the voice-acting is Kojima-typically-awful? Well then... fingers crossed?

  • This series is incredibly over-rated, but I loved Brotherhood's multiplayer, and the only thing that could make me care for the campaign at this point is a brand new setting. Well, the word is that's what we're getting. That's what excites me the most about the series. If it turns out to be AC2: 4, I'm not fucking touching it.

  • I love you, Platinum Games. Please be good. PLEASE PLEASE BE GOOD. ... But I expect a Brink-like single-player with bots, and bad online code.

  • Look, Uncharted is like my favorite thing in the world right now. And this game looks like garbage. Dora the Explorer, environments I've seen before, predictable plot, really lame, stilted set-pieces... Bad feeling Sony is going to kill this franchise, and that Naughty Dog is actually moving on now that Uncharted 3. But I'm still hoping for Uncharted 4 at launch for PS4.

  • Six months ago this would've been one of my top 10 anticipated games. But watching people play the beta it's like... what do you do!? Yeah, it's gorgeous, but... that can only carry you so far. Hoping it's awesome, but I'm just being realistic.

  • I feel like I've played Borderlands for twenty hours, but I think I only beat two bosses. Picking up loot and money and guns is incredibly tedious. I don't want to pause to compare shit every 30 seconds. Hoping for an auto-upgrade thing. Oh, and some narrative/characters. Like, even a little.

  • Didn't get more than four hours into the first game of the HD Collection. The gameplay was real easy, real simple, not very engaging. But I adore the art style. As soon as I see some gameplay that isn't super-easy and shallow, that there has been something added to the series other than better graphics, this game will shoot up my list.

  • I've only put like four hours into the first, haven't touched the second. I almost feel dishonest having this on my list at all. But then I wrote this and all is right with the world!

  • Only care about the campaign, and even then I'm not sure if I'll get this day 1. Starcraft 1 is my most-played game of all time... which is why Starcraft 2 was kind of boring to me. It's a case-study in why sequels for games shouldn't take over a damn decade. You might be sick of the bi-yearly churn, but this is the extreme in the opposite. I've played this game.
