Top 10 Xbox Live Arcade Games

No Caption Provided

A few weeks back I made a top 20 for Xbox 360 games. But that list didn't include XBLA games. Not that they aren't good enough, but because they deserve their own list!

Well here it is. My Top 10 XBLA games.

Like with the previous list (and every other list in existence) you will disagree. Maybe I haven't played your favorite game yet. Or maybe I have and thought it sucked! Hah!

Either way, try not to horribly kill me as you find games that are too high or too low on the list. Or not on the list at all. I don't like violence!

Well, maybe I do. God of War is kinda fun. But not when it's inflicted upon me! That's uncool. :(

Top 20 Xbox 360 Games

No Caption Provided
I’ve been playing on the 360 for almost 6 years now. Time to look back and make a top 20 list! First I wanted to make a top 10, but that was impossible to do. Too many great games. Even now I had trouble choosing.

It’s a personal top 20 obviously. You will probably not agree. But where is the fun if you would?

And…before you say it; YES, I do realize I’m actually cheating by counting series as one game. Big whoop. Wanna fight about it?

Harry Potter - Deathly Hallows Pt2 + My hopes for the franchise

Damnit, why? Part 1 sucked. Part 2 will be even worse. And yet I pre-ordered it.

I still have to buy/play LA Noire, Duke Nukem Forever, Alice: Madness Returns etc etc, but nooooo, I buy Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. I just like Harry Potter too much to resist the games, doesn't matter how bad they are.

But what will come next?

JK Rowling is pretty protective of Harry Potter, so can we expect more games like EA did with Lord of the Rings? Or will it stop now?

IF they continue this is what I want:

  • A good game.

That's it. Something we haven't had for many years now.  And if I may dream: Kick EA Bright Light away from the license. They don't care about it or just don't have the talent. Either way, I don't want them involved anymore.

Who DO I want to be involved? Bioware (I said it was a dream). I know, I know... they are teh suxx since Dragon Age II, but I don't believe for a second they forgot how to make good games. And a bad Dragon Age game is still loads better than the best Harry Potter game.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we had a proper RPG at Hogwarts (and surroundings)? Years 1-6 open world and make year 7 the linear portion of the game (kinda like the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2)

If they would announce that game, I would just...faint...fap...squeal with joy. Bioware is making that crappy Star Wars game, so why not a Harry Potter game? At least that is a good license to have. ( ;) )

If that doesn't work out...

Or even if it does work out (still dreaming...): Give me some XBLA remakes/ports of the first Harry Potter games. They were fun, and I like the more colorful and playful artstyle compared to the later games. I know the later games had to be darker, but still. I'd like to revisit the older ones.

One thing I noticed while playing Chamber of Secrets is the voice over that's used to explain the story. Perfect! The source material is a book, so a narrator fits ánd it explains the story much better then the crappy cutscenes used today. Absolutely love it.

Yeah... XBLA remakes and a Bioware game. It's good to have dreams.

Baby's First Steps: My First Platinum Trophy

It's about damn time!

I've always said my first Platinum would come from either God of War III or Just Cause 2. So obviously I got the Trophy from... inFamous?

I already played, enjoyed and finished the game a year ago. Sold it after that, because I didn't feel like going for a second playthrough. But I got the game again for free via the Welcome Back package and started to play it again. It was still as fun as it was a year ago. So before I knew it, this little thing popped up:

Feels good man. I like Achievements more than Trophies, but the concept of a Platinum Trophy is genius. A great finishing touch. On the 360 you 'just' get your final achievement and nothing else happens. Here you get a shiny Plat. Makes it feel more special.

I took my camera and filmed the moment supreme:

Super Street Fighter IV VS Mortal Kombat

I have a sudden urge to play a fighting game. But which one...? SSFIV seems to be pretty good ánd you can get it for pretty cheap these days. But MK is no slouch either. The demo was fun. But it only just came out, so the price will be a bit higher.

The problem is that I kinda suck at fighting games. Between these 2 games I want the one that is the easiest to pick up and play. Not necessarily a button masher, but a game where you don't need a spreadsheet and a lot of dedication to have fun with it.

And maybe one with good matchmaking, so I can play against people who are just as bad as me at the game.

Anyone? :(

Gaming Books

Hm... I like games. I like reading. Seems like a no-brainer to read books about games. And yet I steer clear from gaming books. I just don't think those 2 hobbies should get mixed. Seems weird to read about games. You must play them, not read them!

But at last, there has come one book I actually want to read. Not necessarily because of the game (although I do like the game a lot), but the premise just seems like a good, exciting read.

The novel is a prequel to the game. Geophysicist Michael Altman joins a team excavating an underwater crater. Close proximity to the artefact they uncover, named 'The Black Marker', causes visions of the dead, vivid dreams, and violent murders. This is the story of the origin of 'The Black Marker', the foundation of the Church of Unitology, and a discovery that will change the world.

I wonder how bad it is. Could be a nice sc-fi read, but on the other hand... I just don't trust gaming books.

I love Halo, but I just don't see myself reading the books. Same story with Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I think. Those are the only other books that gives me some doubts. They both have such a rich back story in the games, It probably could and should translate well to books.

Every advanced society in the galaxy relies on the technology of the Protheans, an ancient species that vanished fifty thousand years ago. After discovering a cache of Prothean technology on Mars in 2148, humanity is spreading to the stars; the newest interstellar species, struggling to carve out its place in the greater galactic community.

On the edge of colonized space, ship commander and Alliance war hero David Anderson investigates the remains of a top-secret military research station; smoking ruins littered with bodies and unanswered questions. Who attacked this post and for what purpose? And where is Kahlee Sanders, the young scientist who mysteriously vanished from the base–hours before her colleagues were slaughtered?

Sanders is now the prime suspect, but finding her creates more problems for Anderson than it solves. Partnered with a rogue alien agent he can’t trust and pursued by an assassin he can’t escape, Anderson battles impossible odds on uncharted worlds to uncover a sinister conspiracy . . . one he won’t live to tell about. Or so the enemy thinks.

This is the thrilling prequel to "Dragon Age: Origins", the hit role-playing video game from award-winning developer BioWare! After his mother, the beloved Rebel Queen, is betrayed and murdered by her own faithless lords, young Maric becomes the leader of a rebel army attempting to free his nation from the control of a foreign tyrant. His countrymen live in fear; his commanders consider him untested; and his only allies are Loghain, a brash young outlaw who saved his life, and Rowan, the beautiful warrior maiden promised to him since birth. Surrounded by spies and traitors, Maric must find a way to not only survive but achieve his ultimate destiny: Ferelden's freedom and the return of his line to the stolen throne. This is a must-read for fans of the multi-awarding winning game.

Maybe I should just do it, and buy some of these books. That's the only way to find out if they're worth my time!

Dragon Age II - I played it a bit

edit: Wait, what button did I just press? Did I just posted this as a topic? I wanted this to be a random blog post. To see how it copies over from Wordpress.
Hm, well...uhm... Hello there!

Right. Dragon Age II. I've played it a bit, as you might have read. Well... Actually, as with most games in this genre I mostly stared at the character customization screen.

My VERY basic first 'impressions' are...:

1.

I booted the game on my new and shiny Slim.

2.

Although I didn't make any pictures of that part, I liked the introductory scene.

'No, that's not how it went' was a nice touch.

What I didn't like about that part was that you get to play with the standard Hawke model, but as soon as the next scene starts you get to customize him. Seems weird. Now the opening scene seems disconnected to the rest.

Ah well, it was a short scene, so who cares.

The combat felt very snappy. Very different from Origins wich had a very deliberate feel to it. I don't necessarily mean it as a bad thing. Just something I noticed.
Also a lot more visceral than DA: Origins.

3.

The Customization was, as I expected pretty basic. Seemed like they copy/pasted the Origins stuff right in here without any effort.
But still... enough options for me to panic at the sight of it! :P

If you look a few inches up you can see what I went with. Pretty basic, but at least not as fugly as my first few tries.

Tylar...From the Godslayer Chronicles. Yeah... I suck at making up names.

Oh, he is a Warrior. I like magic and stuff, but I just want to be at the frontlines chopping up darkspawn.

4.

Wow, I can import my Dragon Age: Origins saves? And it actually works? Nice!

Thank god I didn't delete the saves. Or even worse... overwrite them. I tend to make mistakes like that.

For those interested, these were the choices I made:

5.

The game starts. With the new and customized Hawke. He looks weird... Maybe I should have made him different. That goatee looked pretty spiffy too.

Hey, isn't that the Mass Effect wheel thingy during conversations? I wonder if I will be able to punch people in the face.

6.

Let's check out the menu.

I thought they were supposed to have streamlined this game? I'm more confuddled by this monstrosity then I ever was in Origins.

I'll get used to it though.

7.

The first fight. Oh god, I leveled up... Already? Don't make me stare at another screen for an hour. Damnit, here it goes...

Maybe it's me, but again it looks more confusing than the Origins level up thing. But at least it looks more familiar than the talent tree.

8.

I save some people. And we immediately are BFF's!
Well, maybe not. Let's just hope that guy on the left won't kill my lovely sister. That wouldn't be very nice.

And so another adventure begins...

Just don't touch my sister. You can have my brother. He seems like an ass.

To know or not to know…

Now I’m going to start 2 new games I will be facing this dilemma again. Do I want to know the achievements before I start the game, or do I want to be ‘surprised’ when I get them?

Lately that’s the way I was going with achievements… I wanted to be surprised. For the first playthrough I’d never look the achievements up, because it takes some of the fun and ‘surprise’ away. And in a worst-case scenario the story might get spoiled because of an achievement title.

But what has been irritating me is that when I looked at my achievements after the playthrough, I would find some I missed and started facepalming. I would have easily gotten that! Now it is going to take me another playthrough!

What?! there are difficulty achievements? Well, if I knew that I wouldn’t have played on mode X. damn you to hell, difficulty achievements! (and collectible achievements can burn in hell too!)

Now it’s decision time again… Will I look up the achievements for Bulletstorm and Dragon Age II or not… Hm…

It would be easy if someone just told me, but unfortunately no-one reads this blog!
