@alex: Right on, glad to hear it. If the actual audio jacks themselves become a little loose, those should just be screwed on with a little nut on the inside of the audio jack within the drum. You can probably just flip the drums over and periodically tighten them by hand or with a small wrench if they start to loosen up over time.

@alex: Right on, I'll definitely give that a shot.

In any case, I'm still real glad to see your drums holding up well so far. The original kit I made is over 10 years old at this point, and other than replacing the heads periodically, I've only had to replace one of the sensors a year or two ago. Fingers crossed that your set hold up at least that long or longer!

@alex: Glad to see that tutorial still going around. Anyone interested in making some drums, definitely check it out, and feel free to DM me for any more specific tips if you end up starting a project of your own.

Incidentally Alex, do you still have any contact with anyone at Harmonix these days? I'd be really interested in reaching out to someone there to inquire about the possibility of supporting additional controllers in RB4.

I've been talking to my brother recently about building another kit for him, but the Ion brains are near impossible to fine now, and even stock RB drum hardware is super expensive these days. If there was the possibility that Harmonix would be willing/able to support standard controllers, or especially something like the Xbox One Adaptive Controller, it would make custom instrument projects like this way more accessible and affordable.

@tommytours You can totally use these as normal electronic drums, you'd just need to provide your own drum brain. I picked up a used Roland DM5 a few years ago to try this out, and it works pretty much flawlessly. The drums use a standard 1/4 inch audio jack, so they should work with any drum brain that those cables can be plugged into.

I am the crazy person who made these drums for Alex.

I am totally going to put together a tutorial video on how to put together a set for yourself for those who are interested. It'll probably be a few weeks, but I'll share it here and on the Giant Bomb forums when its done.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to message me here (or even better on twitter).
