Games Played 2022: Ranked

  • I can't stop playing doom wads.

  • Decent game for the franchise. Halo combat can still be as fun as ever. However, it didn't run great on my computer, the open world is rather derivative, and the story was disappointing. Most of the interesting stuff apparently happened between major halo games. Maybe I had to play the RTS games or read the books or something, but come on.

  • This is an interesting contrast to Death's Door because it is similarly light on mechanics and depth, yet the world is interesting, vivid and charming enough to carry it. Vacuuming up gunk is satisfying, and so is exploring the colourful alien world.

  • Had a weird hankering for a single player, traditional deck building game and this fit the bill extraordinarily well. Cheap and well designed with a cyberpunk asthetic which I enjoy. It's really no frills, hell it's not even widescreen, but the card game is a good time. So far I have some issues with mission difficulty not being very apparent, so I just get blown away sometimes when other missions I pick up later are actually easier. Oh well, I love gathering cards and building decks through a campaign just like the old pokemon card game on the gba, and this fit the bill. Speaking of a craving for these games, Fanatical was having a bundle sale on them including this, so I lucked out.

  • Cat sitting for a friend so brought this on the 3DS. It's good, only problem is the 3ds itself - platformers can be a bit uncomfortable for my hands on this thing. Other than that, there's some weirdness - the parry move is useful but feels a bit weird in a metroid game, and you can basically radar sweep the map to find secrets. They had to try something different of course, just not sure they hit on everything. I also find Metroid 2 and remakes a bit annoying with the spiderball upgrade, all the way back to the gameboy or even AM2R - well I might as well spiderball up every wall that I can. Oh there's nothing here. It's maybe a dumb complaint to have TOO much freedom to explore, but it's just not fun slowly rolling up all the walls. Ok other than those issues, it's... good. Just not blowing me away or anything. The 3DS doesn't really help, both its shape and its homely 3d graphics capabilities.

  • Good castlevania simon's quest homage for a while, but I had a real problem with specific inputs later in the game. The upward dash just would randomly fail to register, leading to a lot of deaths. I did start using the newer xbox series x controller and the dpad feels different, but I haven't had issues like this so far. Yet I don't see many complaints about controls so maybe I'm just not used to it. But it really just feels like bad controls, which is really bad when the game starts throwing instant death pits at you constantly.

  • Gamepass. Surprisingly underwhelming as I was expecting more given some of the praise its received. Overhead Zelda-style game, but I didn't find the world, combat or exploration very compelling. Yet it was just good enough to get me through to completion, since it's not too long. I even explored for some secrets because that was generally the most fun in the game. This all made a lot more sense when I discovered it was mainly developed by two people.

The world and characters do have a few charming touches, but it doesn't go far enough. Combat is probably the biggest let down and just feels uninspired, and had me doing the same dodge and basic combo the entire game. Disappointing, but not terrible, just verging on monotony.

  • Playing vampire survivors, great little addictive 3 dollar game. Classic overhead combat against hordes of enemies with castlevania type flavour. Your character autoattacks and gains experience to power up abilities, and it has some roguelite flavour where you can invest in upgrades between deaths. Simple and effective design.

I kinda stopped playing it once I got to the later levels where the most effective thing seems to be a knife fountain, and it becomes kind of annoying to maintain. But it looks like the game will continue to grow, so that's cool.

  • I loved final fantasy tactics advance back in the day and wanted to relive that glory with this. It is a good choice to do so, just not sure I'm into tactics games as much any more. Just feels... slow. The turns, the enemy HP, etc. Don't feel like finishing it. If I try another FF tactics style game it might have to be the original, which I haven't played much of.

  • Definitely more interesting and expanded than Turok 1, but still feels like a weird n64 game... because it is. Levels are non-linear but it's a bit too easy to get lost.

  • Popped this in because I never finished the series. Kinda hard for me to go back to now, especially being limited to 30fps on the xbox. A PC port may have helped in this regard. Maybe I'll get through it since it does have some interesting set pieces, but it's also kinda lame in that brown shooter with dumb chunky meatheads kinda way that the Gears series perfected at this time.

  • Was looking through my game library to try to find a game I thought I had, which is annoying when there are so many services. Turns out I couldn't find Fell Seal: Arbiters' Mark, but I did find that Twitch Prime Gaming moved to Amazon Gaming... so that was a new thing to download. However I saw I had this, and was curious. Doom had me in a retro shooter mood, and I was always sort of interested in Turok on the N64, though I'm not sure I ever rented it for some reason. But people talked about it. Ended up playing through about half the game in one sitting just having a good time. It's a pretty no frills, straightforward shooter and that's cool, with some weird design decisions like enemies that teleport in if you linger in an area, which can be annoying when you're just exploring. It ends up making you think about the trade off between spending ammo to explore an area, or just finding a way to avoid enemies. There are also random portals which open up leading to a little mini challenge area, which I thought was cool until I found out there's only like two in each level that repeat. But that was a cool idea that I saw a game like Doom 2016 try out in a more substantial fashion with the rune challenges. The game also isn't entirely linear, more like different branching paths in each level to find hidden keys, which sometimes is a drag when backtracking and figuring out where a portal goes where. But the shooting, even if it feels oddly imprecise (the crosshair is not enabled by default??) was fun enough to play for several hours. I like its quirky late 90s nature and I'll see if I can finish it in one or two more sittings.

  • Tried playing this again while I was enjoying ye olde Doom, played a few levels just to sort of compare with the old games. What really hit me was just how freakin fast the original Doom is, especially when you get used to enabling "always run" which is blistering fast and necessary when things get hairy. I actually kept trying to run by holding shift and realized I was running. And this game is extremely fast by modern standards of course. But that's just what happens when you play nothing but Doom for a month straight. It's a great game, but I played a lot of the early levels years ago so I probably won't play through the whole thing again. Even though it was on Xbox and I wanted to try a keyboard and mouse. On the other hand, Doom Eternal is also on Gamepass and I found that to be a lot harder with a controller, and I haven't played the DLC... so it's possible I will go through that one on PC. Who knows.

  • Checked this out for a few minutes and was highly amused... for a few minutes. I saw it was pretty thin so lost interest, but was worth the free gamepass download to pet dogs and see the fake social media posts about your dog pics.

  • Gamepass. Meh, it's a nice artistic game but I found myself just clicking around and not being exactly sure what I was doing and just progressing. Didn't feel like finishing it. Usually these aren't my type of games because I'm a cretin.
