@ajamafalous: "Imagine thinking analysis of a value proposition, something inherently personal, is entitlement. Do you react the same way somebody tries to weigh the purchase price of a video game?"
While I agree it's not entitlement most people don't often have the option of obtaining 90% of a games content without financially supporting it.
It seems strange to read people try to justify not financially supporting NL. Even if you're not paying them the traffic and discussion likely attract more people who will.
I mean, people are free to discuss what they please. It's just boring to read what someone will/won't personally support (especially when the reasons are as benign as many are)
I get your angle, but there is actually a video game analogy here. Giant Bomb and Nextlander are akin to free-to-play models. Giant Bomb gives away the main game and direct community communications, such as the Bombcast and Quick Looks and a message board, while charging one price to unlock all additional content.
Nextlander currently appears to be modeled on free-to-play for the bulk of the content, while banking on a built in goodwill from a dedicated fanbase and whales to buy minor perks similar to vanity cosmetics in the form of having your name read and giving input, whatever that means, about the direction the new company takes. The community board is behind the paywall in the form of Discord.
Functional business models either way. Good luck to both parties. I hope for their continued success.
