GOTY 2012

List items

  • I cried.

  • Although the story, which starts off so strong, completely takes a turn for the disappointing three-quarters of the way through, Far Cry 3 was some of the most fun I had with a game all year.

  • When I first played 999 I had no idea that one of the lead writers behind the Infinity series (Never7, Ever17, Remember11) was the director so the mindblowing turn the story took caught me off guard. I was more prepared going into Virtue's Last Reward but it still managed to surprise me with an even more convoluted story. An entertaining cast of characters, great voice acting, and engaging puzzles are a plus.

  • To be honest, this is probably the best game I played all year as the original Persona 4 is one of my all-time favorite games. Since this is an enhanced remake, I figured I wouldn't take those feelings into account when making my list. Otherwise, put this at #1.

  • I mindlessly played Fez for hours the day it was released. The sense of discovery is amazing and the secrets that are often right under your nose felt endless.

  • Dust is a gorgeous game with fun, addictive gameplay. It packs a lot of nostalgia for games I played when I was younger but with a pretty damn dark story. And THAT ENDING.

  • I gave Katawa Shoujo the benefit of the doubt going in. I had heard plenty beforehand that it wasn't the vile disabled girl boning simulator that it may seem on the outset so I wasn't expecting to hate it. I did not, however, expect to like it as much as I did. It's high quality despite being made by a bunch of random people and released for free and has a touching and sincere story that managed to make me tear up at points. The soundtrack (which is a free download too) is absolutely phenomenal as well and I still listen to it from time to time.

  • I never got into fighting games. I don't have anything against them, I just never felt like putting in the time to get good at them and I don't have any friends who are into them either. I only got Persona 4 Arena for the story which is a highly entertaining revisit with some old friends. I was taken aback with just how emotional the new character Labrys' story is. The actual game was fun too even for someone who isn't into fighting games.

  • I've always despised stealth in games because whenever I screwed up, I'd get stressed to no end. While I experienced some of that in Dishonored and found myself saving my game almost every time I passed an enemy and loading said saves every time I was detected, the creativity that can be had with the assortment of ways to handle encounters is wonderful. Despite that, I found myself really only sticking with Blink and feeling like a badass whenever I only used that to get through tough situations.

  • Everything that can be said about Journey has already been said. The visuals and score are beautiful but it was the online component that, for someone like me who never plays online multiplayer these days, truly blew me away.
