@tonch: It is what some people are trying, I'll agree, but I honestly think that battle is lost. A few rotten apples that yell loud enough is all it takes for a thing like GamerGate to be negatively perceived and sadly it is easier to ruin something than to rebuild it once it's been destroyed.
@wolfgame: I wasn't trying to single you out specifically. It was more an attempt to avoid having one tweet blow up, sorry if that didn't come across :)
The problem is that the people who are reasonable and who have valid concerns and questions about journalism ethics happen to occupy the same hashtag as some of the more deplorable people do. That's why, in my eyes, the whole gamergate hashtag needs to stop. Not because the people who have valid concerns and opinions aren't allowed to have them, but because the hashtag itself has been muddied. I can understand the need to be heard, especially if you feel wrongly grouped with a bunch of harassing jerks, but that hashtag is not the solution. Nor is Twitter for that matter in my opinion.
Just for the record, I think people should examine the replies to the quoted Alex tweet. Yes he is angry and understandably so, but he is also pretty civil in the replies.
It just goes to show that Twitter is literally the worst place to have this discussion.
I think I'm more or less done with games journalism after this entire debacle.
I'll continue to frequent Giantbomb, as they have managed to more or less steer clear of this entire thing. I'll continue watching the guys do what they do best, but other than that, I'm pretty much done with games journalism.
Fuck all of this social media wars bullshit. I like videogames, I don't act like a terrible person. I have no interest in getting caught up in some shit slinging contest for good or evil or jerks or mysogyny or misandry or whatever the fuck, I'm fucking sick of it. Just play a fucking videogame and enjoy what is an amazing fucking medium, christ.
Trogging along in my Resident Evil marathon. Finished Zero and Original RE, done Leon A in RE2 and currently playing Claire A.
Contemplating whether or not, I should go back and play the RE1 Remake with Chris as I completed the PSOne version with Jill (larger backpack + lockpick > More health).
