The only form feminism seems to be modern since women having anything more than meager rights is very much a 20th Century thing. *shrug*

For human history spanning ten thousand years hasn't been kind or fair to women. It is not surprising if people are skeptical when they act everything is fine just because the last couple of decades have come closer than before.

They weren't fair to men either. In fact, nobody had it good, when you consider the infant mortality rate, spread of disease and lack of medicine. To imply that men "had it easy" compared to women is ridiculous.

  1. Are Men and Women portrayed differently in media (other than strictly biological differences)?
  2. Does media affect our perception of the world?

I don't think this is a sound argument. If you want a world where men and women are portrayed the same and / or the media doesn't affect our perception of the world, that's your right, but without hard evidence to back up why it needs to be addressed, it is simply your opinion and holds no value to society.

What I will add is that men and women would naturally be portrayed differently in media. They're not the same. That's not an incitement to prejudice or superiority, but the truth.

Just remember that this was the guy who thinks "patriarchy is a myth". :)

When the wage gap is a myth, there's little else to support the 'patriarchy' idea in radfem context.

The Matrix analogy is a little on the nose, but systemic sexism (And racism. And homophobia) IS based on casually accepted societal norms and subconscious biases. It's a problem because people don't realized that it's problem.

This is, like, sociology 101, and the reinforcement of traditional gender roles through culture is ultimately shitty for both men and women.

Man, look at all that evidence you posted to back up your opinion. Now I know society is sexist, racist and homophobic. Thanks Obama!

Why are you guys so upset by this? What are you so afraid of?

And damn some of you guys really guys talk about feminism like it's some uber-effective brainwashing cult.

Sorry to break your long post down so much, but I think this is where you're having a problem. No one is afraid of feminism, it is simply thought of as unnecessary by many people in modern Western society. This is easily backed up by, for example, real salary equality, changing views on morality and the electorate being mostly female.

That brings us to my second point. When feminists can't bring up any actual evidence but do misrepresent statistics or spew anti-male hatred, if no one is brave enough to stand up to them, that does create an environment to be brainwashed. If they're wrong, they should be challenged, otherwise they are given control of the discussion, ironically out of the very fear you talk about.

For example, stating that "games only don't have women main characters because men hate to play as women." That is clearly a generalisation and missing the point. Men have the right to prefer playing as their own gender and make up the majority of gamers who play "core games." I apologise for going into a largely off-topic rant.

Hmm, the wage gap does exist across sections of the general economy where the factor isn't so much what men and women in the exact same job/role is off but getting to that job/role.

If you want an easy to digest way to understand this look at The Jobs With The Biggest (And Smallest) Pay Gaps Between Men and Women. In general, women get paid 80% of men which is gap. I'm not sure why people believe "the pay gap has throughly been debunked" when all you need to do is walk into training or classes and notice how unbalanced some classes are.

@lively said:

I wish people wouldn't confuse "I saw one article / video that disagreed with X" as "X has been thoroughly debunked".

And I wish people would stop confusing equality of opportunity with opportunity of results, that is where the disparity comes from. Guess why women aren't in those classes or high-paying jobs? Because more choose to go into, for example, nursing or childcare. This is what studies have proven, it's not "one article / video."

Patriarchy is also a conspiracy theory; 'the world is run by misogynistic men.' Replace the last two words with whites, jews, capitalists, communists. It's the same shit.

wage for equal job types, and the general "old boys" social structures that subtly, but consistently keep Women out of positions of power and influence (I'm talking on average, and giving me a few anecdotes that show otherwise won't cut it).
  1. The "wage gap" myth has been debunked many times over.
  2. It's laughable that you state this conspiracy theory as fact and give no evidence of it but then say that, in relation to proving wrong this house of cards argument, "a few anecdotes [...] won't cut it."

Anita is becoming more and more irrelevant as we get these videos, not for all the fedoras in San Francisco could you defend her from the best rebuttals put out by Thunderf00t and KiteTales as two examples. That she has consistently ignored these responses and takes on average half a year to put out these half-an-hour videos kind of destroys her credibility. No, that trolls pick on her for the obvious hypocrisies does not give her credibility, that makes no sense.

Will it detect that I'm a queer-sexual female wolf trapped in a man's body, though?
