Easily my game of the year. Besides the fantastic story and memorable characters, and what might be my favorite game ending of all time, the world feels startlingly realistic. Add online and some fantastic way's to pass the time, how could this NOT be GOTY 2010?
After creating a massive universe in the first game, Bioware really hit their stride, by trimming every little bit of fat that the first game had (IE, the Mako sequences) and made a near flawless game that was dark and serious, as well as fun and lighthearted at times. They expanded on the characters back story's in an indispensable way, and a way that i hope other RPG's can learn from.
Although it does have its problems, Alan Wake's story and atmosphere more than made up for it with me. Twin Peaks mixed with Steven King? Hell yes.
Who cares about a broken engine. Sometimes, glitches can ADD to a game (Red Dead). With better writing and quests, and more customization options make this better than its predecessor. It keeps me going after those goddamn undiscovered areas until way into the next day.
The first Bioshock was and still is, one of my favorite games of all time. Therefore, the second installment was one of my most anticipated games of the year, and one of my most anticipated ever. I wasn't disappointed in my journey back to Rapture, the world i love so much. The atmosphere was along the same lines, although i didn't think that the characters were as strong, there were no ridiculously memorable characters such as Sander Cohen in this game, but the writing, story, and the much improved game play made this game a worthy successor to the first.
I remember the first time i played the demo on XBL for this game, and it blew me away. The quirkiness of it and the just ridiculous action, and spanking guys to death, instantly won me over, and it jumped to the top of my must play list at the beginning of the year. Once i picked it up i was not disappointed at all. It had all of the Clover trappings (fuck platinum, they'll always be Clover to me), such as the references to Okami and Viewtiful Joe and other franchises, it had the sense of humor and craziness that I loved so much about God Hand, it had a crazy anime storyline that we would never get out of a western game, and it has one of the deepest and most entertaining combat systems that i've ever played, as well as tons of unlockables and challenge missions.
There's nothing to really say about this game that hasn't been said. It has a great sense of humor and tons of throwbacks to gaming. I love it when games are crushingly difficult, and that's what this game is. Between this game and VVVVVV it has been a fantastic year for masochists. Also, one of the best soundtracks EVER.
The gauntlent is thrown down with the release of RB3. Harmonix took what was the best music game on the market and made what wasn't perfect even better. Pro guitar, Keys, and Drums, Vocal Harmonies, the story structure is much, much better. Adding even more songs, many of which are classics such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Freebird, and some songs that are more fun to play then they deserve to be (i'm looking at you Rock Lobster). There doesn't need to be any other rhythm games after this. If you enjoy playing plastic instruments, there's not really any reason not to own this game.
Ive played this game for 50+ hours and haven't gotten bored, and the whole game is about blowing shit up. There's also ninjas in it. That's all that really needs to be said about this game. If you like explosions, this is your game.
Even though the game includes some GAPING plot holes, the tension of knowing that if the characters die they're gone made the game an unbelievable experience. Even though the plot may not have been the most groundbreaking thing ever written, the atmosphere and gameplay innovations more than make up for it.
