Adjusted for current conversion rates the current subscription costs the equivalent of $62 in the UK.
For a long time (read; before the current economic down-turn) the conversion rate was closer to, or above, 2-1. Meaning we paid around $80 a year or there about.
Now, the average personal income in the UK works out at about £22,000 before tax and around £17,500 after, meaning that an xbox live subscription is somewhere around 0.44% of total net income.
The US average personal income is $26,000 (after tax...whatever that may be) which means that a LIVE subscription of $60 is 0.42% of net income. So, you're still paying less than the UK andyou get more features (also, food, petrol, clothing, electronics.....all that rate adjusted? Is about 20-30% cheaper than Europe)
