Start here.

I also find this in-depth analysis of Disney and Dogg to be thoroughly entertaining - and I couldn't care less about "Lion".

Out of my favourite Quick Looks, I think Noby Noby Boy, Motion Sports, Cargo: The Quest for Gravity and Roller Coaster Rampage are probably the easiest to enjoy sans GB knowledge.

It seems somewhat redundant to introduce people who rarely play games to GB though. For example, Vinny and Jeff's sports QL's are always enjoyable, and I find Flight Club videos to be fantastic, but without context (either games or GB personalities) I don't think the appeal would remain.

Not trying to be rude, but there are a couple of typos @patrickklepek

Much of the response felt driven driven
what sells well know

Also I dislike the use of the phrase "strong, independent women" as it implies women are weak and dependent by default - but that's probably just me being pedantic.

On the up-side, I feel that this is a discussion worth having, as airing these issues in public is a step towards addressing them. Unfortunately I can't help but think that the end of discrimination is very far away indeed.

Re the percentage of female gamers: Patrick, would you be able to obtain those same statistics minus browser and mobile games? I'm aware of how cynical that sounds, but it's a genuine question. Given that the ESA page linked in the article states: "Seventy-three percent of all games sold in 2011 were rated "E" for Everyone, "T" for Teen, or "E10+" for Everyone 10+." I feel it grossly misrepresents gamers and gaming culture - just take Giant Bomb: Do you think 73% of 2011 content (staff and user created) was related to games rated E, T or E10+? I certainly don't.

GB started saying it way more than is normal so I was wondering what started that.

Probably because there has been a lot of dark middle chapters in recent years, what with it being a trope and all.

thats not what trope means, don't let TVTropes confuse you (also a trope doesn't mean something that has gotten popular lately).

I don't know what you think trope means, but:

Merriam-Webster: a common or overused theme or device

Oxford: a significant or recurrent theme; a motif

A third Aussie here with the same issue.

Streaming, progressive and HTML5 are dial-up slow, however YouTube 720p is smooth as silk. I'm guessing the issue is to do with where the videos are stored (as YouTube vids are stored elsewhere). For me, the problem started towards the end of this week's TNT (i.e. 8th Nov).

Edit: Videos are back to their speedy selves for me!

@rempresent: As I understand it, Valve will be implementing a mentoring system after launch of the game proper. They have about 15 heroes to add, and then balance changes after that, so it could be some time yet. I heard a rumour that they're aiming to launch this year though.

In the meantime, YouTube is a great resource, there are playlists that cover the whole gamut from roles to laning to item builds etc. I have found Purge's videos to be helpful and less patronising than many others, so I'd recommend you take a look there. Additionally, here is a beginner's playlist - I have watched only a few of the videos listed, but it should be helpful.

I'd recommend you learn what distinguishes the various roles such as carry, support, pusher etc. as it will help you to understand what players are trying to do and when, when you're watching a game/video. I can go into a bit more detail about these if you want, but a) I'm far from great at the game myself and b) I don't know what you already know about the game. (Just @ me if you want a reply, as I don't usually monitor the forums)

One thing to be aware of is that Valve's role categories (eg. carry, disabler etc.) are not perfect. For instance Anti-Mage, Faceless Void and Morphling are "hard carries", and come into their own very late in the game, yet no distinction is made in-game about them; you just have to discover it for yourself.

Hope some of that helps!

In my opinion, the most popular maps of many shooters are the worst:

COD Blops: Nuketown

Battlefield 3: Metro

Team Fortress 2: Two Fort

I prefer tactics to twitch-shooting, so these kill-boxes hold little appeal for me. It's a shame, because these games have great potential to accommodate both twitch players and tacticians.

I don't mean to spam, but Beagle on Youtube is doing an Ironman Impossible run here. His videos are concise and informative - could be a big help to some.

I mentioned this band as one of the exceptions in that previous thread: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Also, not a band, but Tom Waits has been active for about 40 years now, and none of his 17 studio albums are bad (IMO)

I came here to say this. Album after album of gold from both.
