  • Should have prioritized completing this last year.

    Excellent level design, game play mechanics, characters and environmental design.

    The narrative is well above average and the game oozes style.

    As was the case with its predecessor this is a quality product.

    Dishonored 2 is better though.

  • Like returning to a familiar and well-loved vacation destination.

    I wish more games of this scale and ambition were made because playing Skyrim again (4 years after I did so for the first time) has been a reminder of how few games, if any, come close to the epic scale and sense of possibility of this title.

  • This is an extremely well written and deep CRPG.

    This the fantasy RPG where instead of having you tread the path of the intrepid heroes journey, you are an agent of the evil overlord who is tasked with presiding over the crushing of a rebellion as you see fit.

    There are a pleasing number of ways to approach this objective, and an even more impressive number of ways to emerge from early choices to shape the mid game narrative.

  • Quite a strong VR game all things considered.

    The core game play is solid and tense. The shooting mechanic is reasonably strong. Traversal is acceptable. Tracking works just about well enough with two towers but clearly a third would make things as smooth as they can possibly be.

    Voice acting is by Steven Ogg (I think) of GTA5 Trevor fame and he does a decent job.

    Overall this stands alongside Superhot, and Dead and Buried, as the best VR shooter experiences. It stands with Superhot as the best single player experience.

  • Erm. I feel a bit conflicted when I think about rating Inside.

    On the one hand it is an extremely visually intriguing game. From both art design and art style standpoints there's an awful lot to praise about it.

    The game teaches you ideas and then gets you to apply those ideas to puzzles to enable your progress through the world. You might get momentarily stuck once or twice in your first play-through but none of the puzzles will really tax you. Even the most difficult among what puzzles there are can be solved by simply trying all the possible solutions in order until you hit the right one.

    That isn't to say you'll breeze though the game; quite the opposite, you'll die regularly and in quite horrific and brutal ways sometimes.

    But Inside's lack of serious challenge combined with its lack of a satisfying narrative journey are things I can't overlook. The ending caused a bit of a stir, but honestly it is the opposite of satisfying.

    Surprising yes, but great? Absolutely not.

    But props where they are due, Inside is a very solid game, pretty to look at, and at 4 hours or so doesn't egregiously outstay its welcome.

  • Single player campaign... Meh. Yeah ok. Six hours of my life I won't get back but that isn't to say it wasn't without high points. Overall I preferred the previous Advanced Warfare installment.

    Multiplayer. Haven't tried it. Don't really want to.

    Zombies. EXCELLENT. ADDICTIVE. DEEP. REPLAYABLE. BETTER THAN THE MAIN PRODUCT.

    3/5 overall (Zombies 4/5)

    I will stick with it though

    What happened to action hero Resident Evil? This is way, way, more uncomfortable and creepy to play.

  • The campaign is a polished product with some excellent CG cut-scenes and the kind of mission design that acts as an extended tutorial for all the unit types and strategies.

    It isn't until the latter stages of the campaign that Halo Wars 2 puts you in strategic situations that genuinely have a range of corresponding tactical approaches.

    Multiplayer - yet to try this

  • Got to give this game due credit.

    With every passing year I like it more & now I'm looking forward to Destiny 2

    When this launched I rolled my eyes and felt irritated by how thin it was. Now I'm obsessed and cannot wait for more. I don't think I've ever experienced such a hard turn-around on a game.

    Destiny is an unequivocal 5/5 experience now.

    It is also maybe one of the top five games of this console generation now. Really!

  • A very well made and very tightly contained Japanese RPG.

    I finished through to endings A and B and unlike some (most?) others didn't feel especially impressed by the story, or motivated to put in another dozen hours to play through to ending C.

    Stylish as fuck. Intriguing in its set up. But ultimately mediocre in the execution of its levelling systems, world traversal, and combat.

    Note. I watched the remaining endings on youtube. The story is nothing more than you'd expect from a mediocre sci fi novel. It was entirely predictable for the most part and the parts that were not predictable were not very impactful because the characters and their relationships to eachother were very thin.

  • Big sci fi adventure with great combat mechanics.

    Not as good story telling or narrative framing as the other Mass Effect games but still an impressive game on balance when you consider the size and complexity.

    Doesn't take away from the fact that it is a disappoinment but lets be level headed about what it actually achieved as well as what it didn't.

  • I played the bunker last year; a game that like Late Shift was made by Wales Interactive. The bunker was a game that should have been a short film instead. Fascinating concept. Dull execution.

    Late shift is a significant improvement on both fronts. The pace of the story moves quickly, decisions come fast, and evidently impact the storyline.

    Production quality is pretty high. A lot happens and the pace is pretty fast. Late Shift holds your attention and doesn't waste it.

    My first playthrough took 77 mins and now I'm looking forward to my wife playing through so that I can see where the decisions take her story.

  • Ten hours in and this is what I can say so far

    1. This is much better than Lords of the Fallen.

    2. The level design and gameplay loop is solid, but needs to evolve a bit with new enemy types being added soon. Otherwise it'll start to feel a little bit too grindy.

    I'll finish this game. I'm enjoying it.

    20 hours in.

    1. This is a really good game. Definitely full of intriguing environments and the story is nicely delivered via subtle means.

    2. Gameplay depth is suprisingly good. This has the Dark Souls 1 vibe more than later Souls titles.

    (after finishing (50 hours)) This is a very well crafted title. It lacks environmental and narrative depth. That isn't to say that it is weak in either area but in order for this to have been a 5 star game the story and the way it was delivered to the player would have needed to be just a shade or two stronger.

    With that said, this really was an excellent game. Much better than Lords of the Fallen and arguably better than Dark Souls 2 and 3.

    It is certainly most reminiscent of Dark Souls 1 in terms of world design and the take on combat is a step forward.

  • I feel bad about giving this a 2/5, let alone a score at all as I didn't finish it. I got about 5 hours in to this intriguing adventure game that has brief shooting segments. The trouble with the game is the game play. It is dull. To enjoy this you'd need a hell of a lot more patience than I had. And I say this as someone who was somewhat pulled into the story and characters.

    In the end I just had to stop playing after half a dozen hours. I just wasn't enjoying it.

  • Started it. Put 5 hours in. Shouldn't have done. This isn't especially fun and nowhere close to the single player games. I really shouldn't have wasted my time/money.

  • Excellent pacing thus far (5 hours in)

    VR and touch controllers are perfect for the zero gravity movement mechanics in this game.

    This is the first VR game I've played that takes full advantage of the touch controllers in a way that couldn't otherwise be replicated or approximated with a standard controller.

    It is also the first game where locomotion is perfectly implemented.

    Add to this list that it is the first game in VR that has well written characters and good environmental storytelling.

    This is really quite a notable achievement for VR. I look forward to completing this and writing more about it.

    Bewarned that this is an alpha build that's being sold at this point. It seems like it will have a lot of potential but also really quite odd to release a product on PC and console that is so unfinished and then charge for it. I hold out good hope for the finished product but won't play it until then.

    I liked it but overall the gameplay and story aren't as tight or as well developed as they could be. This is a 3/5 game.

  • This is a really well produced game with very evident high production value.

    After half a dozen chapters or so I feel like Uncharted 4, more than any previous Uncharted games, leans on cut-scenes and narrative.

    This works because they are excellent and the writing for the characters is excellent.

    I'm more impressed than enthralled after 5 hours. 100% worth my time though.

    (upon completion) Yep this was a fitting end to the Drake franchise and, at times, felt like the best game of the four. 5/5 but I'm in no need of an Uncharted 5 and seriously hope they don't make one!

  • another one of these games. As usual I've started and completed a case (which has been enjoyable enough) but have then put it down and don't know if I'll pick it back up.

    One day I will actually complete a Sherlock Holmes game. Maybe it'll even be this one?

  • Pretty good PS4 exclusive. Polished and entertaining. Story is both excellent and ultimately slightly underwhelming. I'm a bit older than the target demographic perhaps?

  • Playing this on a laptop while flying a couple of transatlantic flights was an excellent way to pass that time. Would fully recommend 80 Days as a travel game 4/5

    A pleasure to play and a huge step forward from the original.

    This game is absolutley huge... as in well over 100 hours required to complete. I clocked 120 to finish the game and by no means did I see and do everything.

    That'd be the only thing I'd list as a negative to those without that kind of time to commit.

    One other small point to underscore is that there are a number of world hubs that roughly correspond to acts of the story so while freedom to go anywhere and see stuff is pretty high, the game definitely gates areas with foes that cannot be dented until you level adequately. This mechanism also forces the player through a fairly funnelled narrative progression as there are fights that are completely unwinnable that regularly act as story progression gates. All of which didn't bother me excessively because it allowed for a more tailored narrative delivery.

    I had an uneven but ultimately an excellent time with DoS 2 overall. The game fell short of absolute classic status for me but it would be churlish to rank it 4/5 because it really pulled me in for well over a month of gaming time.

    Incredibly stylish cyberpunk setting with a great soundtrack and some cool gameplay.

    Too limited in scope and short overall to be thought of as a classic but this is definitely a memorable experience and worth playing.

    seems to play better than the first time I played it upon release (on PC)

    perhaps there have been updates, perhaps I had a better time with it because I remembered successful strategies and so the game was overall much less frustrating.

    Whatever the reason, I enjoyed this a whole lot more on second playthrough and I'll buy the war of the chosen as a result.

  • Not a new game, but 2017 was the release date to modern platforms via backwards compatibility for this title.

    Playing KotOR reminds me of what a god damned classic it was. I intended to have a nostalgic poke around and ended up replaying the whole thing and enjoying the hell out of it.

    For $10 this is great value.

  • As a gaming experience ICEY is short but sweet(ish). Think Stanley Parable meets anime 2D hack n' slash. It works and doesn't outstay its 3 hr welcome but it isn't hugely memorable or recommendable.
