Funny part is that people complained that Origins was using MMO-like combat back when it came out.

I'm not sure why anyone would ever say that because of the big fat space-bar/pause feature. You needed to pause and issue commands. If nothing else people complained it wasn't enough like Baulder's Gate without the "overhead view". In fact some lamented they won't make them like that any more.

That isn't the point. It isn't that DAO started "exciting" or that "it feels like an MMO" or that it was even an okay game but to say it same confusing mess that DAI where you are running from here to there not sure what is going is what I object too. Each of the origins are a little self contained story that is pretty straightforward in the context where you didn't need to know much beyond the immediate situation. On the other hand, DAI does seem to require a bit more where I can see if you don't know or simply forgot about some of the details of the "Dragon Age World" then you'd get confused why you were doing somethings.

I preorder things like WoW expansions but that is more of a case that I've already made up my mind thoroughly looking at the beta in a hands on way. Other games I never pre-order where it doesn't make sense to have a game unlock on Tuesday and can even look at it till a week later due to real life and work.

Most of the things the OP said are things that very much could have been applied to Dragon Age: Origins in its first 8 hours. If they truly did make another great game like Origins, you literally wouldn't be able to tell, because 8 hours wouldn't be a large portion of the game.

What's more, DA2 was so god awful across the board in art, design, and writing, that I cannot imagine how anything could be disappointing compared to it. In fact, my biggest complaint about DAI so far is that it is a sequel to DA2. Everything DA2 did was stupid, so having them continue from all the stupid places that DA2 took us is the worst part of this new game.

I don't know about that. Each of the "origins" had something happen immediately before you got the "main story/problem". To say that it is the same seems kind of odd.

I believe the issue is that DAO was geared as the first and introduction to the world while this game is not. You can't have the first "quest" in the first game have some crazy detailed thing where the player needs to start making "big choices" immediately. My memory of all of the "origins" where straight forward "something bad has happened, fix this now" where later you are faced "oh crap! dark spawns!! make choices to fix this!!!" while DAI throw the player into a situation that involves psuedo-politics and psuedo-religion tensions where the player may not know which way is what.

I agree that the honesty is much appreciated, especially coming from someone who bought the PC release. That being said Patrick, I really think you should be holding Steam just as accountable as Microsoft or Sony for allowing a totally broken game to be sold on their service. Is there just no QA on the seller's side anymore? It's hard to believe that (as someone who meets all of the recommended system requirements according to Steam and has an Nvidia card) someone could have started up AC:U and played for more than an hour without noticing the huge frame-rate and crashing issues present.

I really hope that in the future console manufacturers and online marketplaces like Steam will have to accept some accountability for these sorts of problems, but somehow I doubt that will take place. I can't complain though, I did get a refund from Steam despite their policies about that.

P.S. You should edit your title duder, it says Ubisof!

Steam/Valve's role is pretty different from Microsoft and Sony. Steam doesn't have a certification process, but Microsoft and Sony do. Certification processes exist to ensure a certain level of quality, but it's a bit more wild west on the PC. The onus is entirely on the publisher on the PC.

There's no reason for Steam not to have a certification process for games sold on their service, other than because consumers allow them to get away with it. Same with Origin, uPlay, GOG, or any others.

Obviously the PC's platform variability won't allow for as stringent a process (though console cert is a joke now, compared to the olden days), but it could catch some of the universal bugs people encounter (and there were/are plenty of them in AC Unity)

The reason why PC is such a vibrant and diverse environment for game is because "anyone" can create something where on Sony's and Microsoft's there are "strict controls" on who gets dev kits, licensing, and as already mentioned the "certification process". Start doing these things and it kills the culture PC has created over 30 years that allows creation of entirely new genres and other "low performance" games that would never stand a chance on closed platforms like consoles.

I don't see "quality" as the "deadly serious issue" on PC as it does on the consoles because of its free formed and open environment. It isn't that PC games are less buggy (hell no that isn't true at all) but it is more the case it is "self correcting" where the environment is cut throat and information is so free flowing that it becomes "self correcting".

I've never been a fan of these threads. "Breaking Brad" should born from all of the Bombcast finding a game they know Brad would try until it kills him or win instead of everyone shouting random game titles at them.

Anyone can suggest Brad play some "kuso-ge" but it is something different to have Brad really want to play it and struggle with it. It kind of needs to be whimsy and luck that sets this up.

This is a systemic issue where a developer and producer feels compelled to make some street date even though the game is very wonky. This isn't a problem with just this game but we as consumers are letting them get away with this behavior where instead I and many others would probably be okay if they delayed a small period instead of this "the patch is coming" thing.

NVida 210 was a discount card when the 200 series was new something like 5 years ago. It will not support many modern graphical features that games have today.

The problem isn't that "Halo was an esport so they can do it again" but that "esport has changed". As long as there is no way to stage a camera quickly where it is easy transition from a "see everything skycam" to a "chase camera" then it will be at best a niche game in the esports scene. You need these external camera controls or it gets hard to get a sense of what is going on in a match for the casual viewer or layman to follow which is key to get a following.

Betteridge's Law of Headlines to the rescue: No.

People seem to think this is a problem today but in fact buggy games have been around since the tech has been around. Its not going to kill games any more than it did last year or the year before that or....
