The Microsoft pre-E3 conference that was aimed quite obviously at investors (I guess most of the gaming media didn't pick up on this, but investors really only know about four games: CoD, Halo, Madden, FIFA, and they know about the biggest sports brand (NFL), it was 100% clearly for investors, not for gamers, not for the gaming media, not even for the regular media or casual gamers).
After that conference, I was thinking, ok, I can see how this could fit into my home. Replaces the BD player, and has the advantage that it just goes between the FIOS box and the TV, simplifies everything for my girlfriend and her technologically challenged mother and my newborn daughter will be big enough in a couple years to enjoy dancing games in no fail mode or something.
At $500 I can still see it fitting into my life...when it goes down to $300 or less.
The PS4 doesn't fit into my life. I already don't have a console hooked up to my main television, I've switched pretty much all my AAA gaming to PC because this console cycle was so long, I still play "console style" games, but I do it on a PC with a 360 controller. I'm not going to hook up a PS4 to my main TV and further complicate the family situation (I might get a bigger display for my "office," but why would I pay $400 for a game console when I already have a PC that is pretty close to that level of power), and I'm sure not going to pay extra to get a camera for motion gaming for my daughter and girlfriend without the advantage of the kind of single-stream media that XBone was offering.
I wasn't super thrilled about anything Microsoft was saying, but there are some interesting ideas there about social gaming in terms of sharing games with online friends (good for, um, adults whose friends are all over the country). Having skype in there is great too because when my daughter's grandma is at home overseas we do a hell of a lot of video chatting.
PS4 seems to be shooting for an audience that's short on money or that plays games on a very short timeline. You have to think that rental is going to be figured out on XBone, that's a no-brainer that just has to be arranged with Redbox somehow (they already produce for rental only DVDs and BDs for Netflix etc that haven't got any extra content on them, I can see them doing something similar for games as well). I guess I'm just disappointed at both offerings. Going to PS4 was always going to be a long shot for me, because I HATE the Playstation controller with the passion of a thousand exploding suns, but now I just feel like I've been walked away from by the console industry.
