GOTY 2017

I honestly haven't played much this year in general, let alone "new" games.

List items

  • Despite some kinda really shitty experiences with local players, this year I've overall had a ton of fun playing Pokemon Go. The gym system was totally revamped this year, and legendary Pokemon were introduced via raids. I've spent a countless number of hours (and more money than I want to think) driving and running around town to complete raids and getting a shot at catching legendary Pokemon. And even if I already have half a dozen of a given legendary, I still pump my fist and sharply say "yes!" when I catch another.

PS - I even got a new phone (partially) to play Pokemon better.

  • Yooooooooooo, that Hot Wheels expansion is MY JAM! I never in a million years would have predicted such an over the top, absurdly fun expansion for a Forza game, even if it is in the more loose Horizon series. I hope going forward every Horizon game has an extreme weather expansion and a Hot Wheels expansion. They were both so good and I had a ton of fun going through them.

  • SUPER. HOT. SUPER. HOT. IN VR. SUPER. HOT.

  • My play through of the main story bled through into 2017. Still a great game and I love most, if not all, of the gameplay changes in Sun/Moon. I still prefer the world, music, and Pokemon of X/Y, but actually playing Sun/Moon was a ton of fun and a huge turning point for the Pokemon franchise.

  • Got this on the cheap after hearing the hype for New Colossus. The story is pretty dumb. I really like the cutscenes when the plan is explained and dope music plays. I wish the levels were more linear, and I didn't have to press X to pick up literally everything. Since I'm here for the story though I just threw it on easy and blew through it. Fun!

  • I don't know... I think I liked the first game more. Don't get me wrong, the story was pretty dope, and some crazy stuff happened. But after the first game I think they were in a lot of ways just trying to out do the first game.

  • *sigh* Pretty much everything outside of the track in this game SUCKS ASS. I don't know how. Forza 5 was horrendous. Forza 6 was a great bounce back and was really solid. On paper Forza 7 should have been GOTY for me. It added the three tracks I wanted most, Suzuka, Maple Valley, and Mugello, back to the game since they were dropped from the moved to the Xbox One. Not to mention this game is GORGEOUS. Playing at 4K on a One X is *kisses fingers*. But the single player progression is boring at best, car customization is usually confusing or unnecessary at best, and multiplayer was so broken at launch that Race Night (temporarily?) ended.

  • Got this free with Gold this year, and yah know what? It's pretty solid. Even though it was a launch title, it still looks great. I tend to be a button masher, but when I occasionally get into the grove of things it feels great to dismember barbarians a handful at a time.

  • Another game for me that I started in 2016 and it bled into 2017. I decided to sit down and stick with this game to finish it. Once I unlocked more abilities it became so fun and rewarding to move around the world. Even though I used a youtube walkthough to get through most of the game, I still think the difficulty spike of the final area was absurd. I have no idea how I'd do that without a guide. Great looking game, and I'm actually looking forward to the sequel now!

  • I was able to grab this for $5 during a sale, so I couldn't say no! Despite the sequel getting a metric shit ton of flack this year (rightfully so), I enjoyed futzing around with this game. The card system is an idiotic progression model, and this should just be Star Wars: Battlefield. That being said, it's still fun to run around as a Stormtropper and shoot laser guns.
