The best freeware you've never played.

This is just a list of spectacular freeware indie games.

List items

  • Gorgeous early platformer which combines effortless fun and spectacular aesthetics.

  • Iji is another 2d action platformer, akin to Super Metroid in gameplay, in regards to the exploration, but somewhat linear in that it's level based. Well worth a try.

  • Knytt is just a hallmark in incredibly well designed ambient gaming. Like Bioshock, but 2D and a platformer. And no guns. Actually, it's not like Bioshock.

  • Excellent puzzle platformer with an unorthodox protagonist-it's a ball. Solid controls and great variabilty not to mention great easter eggs.

  • Delightful "Dungeon crawl" romp in a 2D platforming style. The only objective is to go deeper and deeper, finding more treasure.

  • Not necessarily freeware, but deserves a place on this list. Incredibly ambient game. Think Metroidvania in the ocean. Game progresses by learning a variety of songs and applying them to exploration. Phenomenal visuals.

  • Words cant describe this. Play it.

  • The most indepth and realistic sim of all time.

Pretty nice list, though I can't agree with Within a Deep Forest. Not my style.

I should probably look into a few of these.

I really liked Seiklus. I found myself playing it for hours.

This list lives up to it's name. I've only played one of those games, but I know what I'll be doing for the rest of the night. I think I'll start off with Within a Deep Forest.

It can be a bit tricky at times, especially when you can't find which level to go to, but that's part of its charm-Solving puzzles :)

But I really hope you enjoy it. I especially liked the moon cheese level. Let me know how you got on with it!

Aquaria, Spelunky, and the often-copied Knytt.  All yes.

I've played about half of these and I've enjoyed every single one of them. Especially Spelunky. I've lost countless hours due to stupid and untimely deaths. >_> Within A Deep Forest never worked on my PC though. Strange. I'm on a laptop so I'll think I'll try it on this.

I was playing Small Worlds a while ago. It's a good little indie game that rewards exploration. Give it try, it's only 15 minutes.

Yeah I played and loved it, great game. Also, off topic, when you commented on this list, it gave me a quest thing popup for "Make a huge list". Why not!

This is a great list.  I just wish there was more Mac compatibles on here, or if more of these worked without work arounds.

Mac seems to be lost on indie devs, which is a shame.

@Fallen189:  Hopefully this is changing. Flash/AIR/Flex is/has come quite a long way in the past few years and games like Machinarium are showing just how much potential Flash has. Add the fact that Flex SDK is free and open source and frameworks like Flixel and FlashPunk are becoming more well known and built-upon and not only can cross-platform games be developed without the need to buy Flash Builder or Flash Professional, but it's also becoming easier for people to develop/code games.
ON TOPIC: I love Iji <3. Haven't beaten it yet. Just found it the other day. But it led me to this list and because it's on here, I am now about to check out every other game on here!
