Hello Zombie I was instructed to post about my Extra Life thing here. I'm playing Persona 3 FES, Massive Chalice, Need for Speed Most Wanted (2008), and probably some Demolition mode in CS:GO. Come on by!
I'm planning to do at least 12 hours on Saturday of Persona 3 FES, and I'll play probably a good bit of Massive Chalice (BETA TUESDAY OMG) but I don't want to get too deep because I want to have a clean experience on the actual release. As the day tests my capacity for social links and Persona fusion, I'll sprinkle in some CS:GO (mostly Demolition, probably), and Need For Speed Most Wanted (2008). Also on the 31st (HALLOWEEN OMG) I'm going to play all of Costume Quest and Costume Quest 2 for EXTRA SPOOKY LIFE and send out candy to donors if they want to provide their mailing info. That should be a good damn time.

Here's what I hate: concerns about ethics in journalism are valid. Games writing has always been distributed PR, and the path from Games Writer to Games Company Pitch Man has always been obvious. Why? Because you can't make money writing about games without being on the inside and getting paid from the source. That's why there are an unlimited number of sites and personalities who offer differing opinions. You can choose which opinions you generally agree with, and make your own decisions based on their coverage. Coverage that is sponsored by the game creator should be disclosed by the content creator, and any commercial biases should be made clear. In general, that practice is relatively transparent if you get your coverage from a reputable source. If someone was paid to look at a game, they will tell you they were paid to look at a game. If there are concerns with that sort of integrity, those discussions absolutely should happen.
But that ain't this. GamerGate (via KotakuInAction) is about silencing those who write about games through their personal lens. There are no objective reviews, every author's experience with a game will be colored by their personality and history. GamerGate seeks to end this, by actively boycotting and influencing funding for authors who discuss social issues along with the games. If you think Soul Calibur has a misogynistic slant and write about that, your ability to remain employed will be threatened - and from people who probably weren't in your primary audience anyway. That's not ethics, that's not integrity, that's censorship. If you want your game writing to be "objective," and can't seem to find anyone who can do it for you, do it yourself. TotalBiscuit has always been a mechanics-first critic, and rarely will comment on the social bend of a game. The content is out there if you want it, and if you can't find what you want, make it yourself. Attacking the livelihood of those who do something that doesn't meet your needs is not ethics.
