Super Nintendo Entertainment System (PAL) collection

My old SNES was given to me in 1998 as a gift from my grandmother while we were taking my old busted NES to the repair shop. The system was hooked up to a demonstration TV in the shop and ended up following me home the same day. Throughout the years, the SNES has been a solid piece of hardware, always in working condition and still not showing any particularly worrying signs of age.

Accessories include two controllers and a Super Game Boy cartridge.

Games are listed in order of acquisition.

1. Super Tennis

Bought along with the system as the only game available in the electronics store. Solid enough tennis game, if a bit on the nondescript side. Rarely exposed to extended sessions.

2. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

Christmas gift shortly following the system acquisition. Followed Donkey Kong Land 1 and 2 in my first experiences with the Donkey Kong series, making it my first console DKC. More experimental in style than its predecessors, but more molded and systematic in its gameplay, neither a turn for the worse. To this day one of my top 3 absolute favorite games of all time.

3. Super Mario All-Stars

Bought new at retail. Nice upgraded collection of four essential games, examples of true perfection. For a long time my only available option to play the included games. With age and more experience with the original versions, the flawed physics of Super Mario Bros. and The Lost Levels has become a lot more apparent, bringing down the overall impression. Still as good as any a way to play the second and third titles though.

4. The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse

Bought used in a collectors' store. Acquired mostly thanks to young age-faith in Disney products, turned out to be a Capcom masterpiece and one of the system's by far most enjoyable and polished third-party platformers.

5. Walt Disney's The Jungle Book

Bought in a toy store as a gift. In a time when SNES availabilty was dwindling in favour of the N64, I had the choice between this and The Lion King. Good enough fun as far as platformers go and fully competent gameplay, but with occasional unnecessary difficulties thanks to inprecise jump aiming.

6. Cool Spot

Sold to me during the GameCube days by a classmate who found it in his attic. Average platformer starring the charming 7-up mascot (albeit with all references to 7-up removed in this version), not incapable of entertaining but hardly a standout among its genre peers.

7. Pinball Dreams

Bought used at retail during the Wii days. SNES games being very much a rarity in the wild, I didn't want to pass up the chance. A pinball game without any distinct qualities, aside from pretty cool table themes.

8. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

Rented, borrowed and played hundreds of times previously, also acquired on both Game Boy Advance and Virtual Console, I finally got my own copy of the original cartridge when I had some online auction luck a few years back, complete in a big box with the Nintendo Power guide. More than just a platformer, DKC2 is a monument to excellent game design, taking the concept of its predecessor to all new heights by clever use of its in-level secrets.
