Some thoughts about Midway...

So, have you guys heard about the news? Midway filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy today. They're not planning to go away, but this is still bad news regardless. I think the only publisher to file for C11 and survive was Activision back in the early '90s. The thing is, they have plenty of good stuff in their back catalog, they just seem ignorant of it. Throw together a few arcade compilations, put up a place where you can buy individual classics and forget about it, and that's it.

Well, over the next few days, I'll throw out a couple of ideas on arcade compilations and other stuff that won't suck. Price this stuff reasonably well, put a lot of TLC into 'em,  watch 'em sell, and bam, revenue that might help save the company. It might not fix all of the problems they have, but it could help a LOT.

Stay tuned, and check out my ideas for stuff like the Cruis'n Thunder compilation, arcade-perfect ports of the Rush games, digital-download versions of The Grid, and a light gun compilation that won't suck...

So basically, you want Midway to be a reshash company?

No, no, I'm just saying that some of their previous compilations left me wanting, and that I think that they can do better.

I know they can do better. Their back catalog is a goldmine of both great games and unintentionally hilarious titles worth playing.

It's not like Midway is a singular human being with dignity or feelings. It's a company whose best days have been, in all honesty, behind them for awhile. This whole bankruptcy thing probably could've been avoided had they been smarter about re-releasing titles from their back catalog across various formats. I know that, last gen anyway, every console got at least one Midway compilation of some kind (if not more, even the Dreamcast got two discs worth of classic gaming goodness), but really, had they done more with their back catalog in the casual gaming space and used the profits off those games to fund one or two AAA titles a year Midway would still be kicking ass.

Also, good compilations can bring in money, enough money to probably start development on a few games that could be good and all that.

I'll have some examples up Saturday night.
