2020 is almost over and I think the only 2020 release I played was the C&C remaster.

The pinging system is indeed a Dota thing. Ben brought it up a few times but i guess this was the first time the group at large witnessed it . Jeff seemed to imply that Dota might just have a similar system to earlier RTS games, but they do more than just pinging the map , or writing on the map. You also get to ping every item , tower, ability, ally , enemies, timebar, healthbars & manabars to give relevant information about those objects to your teammates. But hey, it's their list and if this is the first time they encounter it in a game, i can see why you would be amazed by it.

Isn't it an MMO thing? I think most MMO's since at least EverQuest 2 - probably earlier than that - let you click items, map locations etc. and automatically bring them into your chat message. I'd also argue that aside from most RTS games since Tiberian Sun or Age of Empires II having map pinging, Battlefield 2, Operation Flashpoint/ARMA and Left 4 Dead all essentially had that too. Didn't even the Halo games implement it around 3?

It wasn't mentioned here, but whenever the Game Boy Tetris skin was mentioned on the Bombcast Jeff would say that its rendition of the theme song wasn't accurate, but I never got an explanation of what was wrong in it? What was played in here sounded accurate to me.

Finally catching up on these beastcasts, it's pretty funny hearing Dan pre- and post-Death Stranding.

Weird that they immediately go to Diablo and Torchlight as comparisons, when it seems so similar to those isometric Tomb Raider games that came out around 5 years ago. They too had two playable characters with co-op, platforming and twin stick shooting.

Anyway, this doesn't seem like my cup of tea.

Was this announced or in early access like 5-7 years ago? I've definitely seen something with almost the exact same art style and perspective/scale based puzzles several years ago, seems like it was around the same time as Q.U.B.E. and many of those other portal likes around 2012-14. I specifically remember the chess piece puzzles.

I'm a pretty big fan of Age of Wonders Planetfall, if my ringing endorsement counts for anything. It seems like Triumph is listening to player feedback and making meaningful tweaks and improvements, which was one of the things I really appreciated with AoW III.

Of the games on this list, I'm also very curious in knowing what the hell is up with Fantasy General II. The first one was a genuine surprise when I messed around with it a few years ago, and the idea that some dev decided to make a sequel to it 24 years later is fascinating.

Yeah, I only got Planetfall a couple of weeks ago as I couldn't afford it when it was released. Are those improvements available for the base game too, or only through expansion packs? I only purchased the standard edition. Agreed on Fantasy General II, very odd thing to make a sequel to so long after the original, and there's been so little coverage of it that I still don't quite know how it turned out.

I would recommend giving Galaxy Squad a miss. One of the few games I've gotten a refund for; it's very rough - and not in an endearing or acceptable way - in a broken and bad kind of way. I will say though, it this was in July when I played it, so I guess it's possible that there's been some major improvements since then?

I was also pretty lukewarm on Blair Witch - the dogtech is the real standout. There's some good stuff in that game, but it can also be a real slog. Although, it is on Game Pass, so you can go check it out for a dollar (or a krona, probably? I guess).

Speaking of Game Pass - Void Bastards is also on there. It's something I would strongly recommend, and I think it's something you'd probably be into. I'll just say that It's tentatively #3 on my GOTY list at the moment.

I actually already own nearly all the games on this list aside from At The Gates, Pathologic 2, Unity of Command 2, Fantasy General 2 and Close Combat: The Bloody First, so it's just a matter of finding the time to play them. Void Bastards has a fairly high priority though, especially since it seems like finishing a run doesn't take all that long. I guess Galaxy Squad will have to wait a bit longer.

(also, the dollar to krona conversion generally goes 1USD=10SEK)

Happy to hear them enjoying it for what it is. I'll grab it once it comes to GOG in a couple of years.

It's kinda shocking just how good SSX3 still looks, just perfect amount of environmental detail for the speed you move through the levels.

Also how much of a technical mess GTA V is.

I'm hoping the mod support for this goes pretty deep, because I'm really interested in the physics simulation here, less so in the player and enemy designs and that stuff. If there are some total conversions out there I'm all in.
