I'm totally fine if it's not someone's taste and if they don't like it. Hey, more power to them. Where I do get annoyed is when someone says the game isn't 'saying' something about politics or genders or whatever. While I'm fine with any medium (including games) talking about these issues there is no requirement for them to. Sometimes things can just be entertaining or just be dumb fun. Besides, who would ever expect that out of borderlands? I'm into some of the humor in borderlands but its just dumb toilet humor. Sometimes dumb shit like borderlands is funny. A game doesn't have to say anything to be funny or always be high brow.
This definitely feels like the moment in time or inflection point where jrpgs and really Japanese games in general were at their height. I feel like oblivion is such a perfect example of how western rpgs really came into their own on consoles and Japanese rpgs really just kinda fell off a year or so after this.
@bisonhero: yea what you're saying makes sense but I would think if every AAA game becomes a Destiny clone or mini mmo as I like to think of it as,I don't think there's enough money to go around. So let's say as a hypothetical EA puts out Anthem which is supposed to a similar thing to Destiny and then they release this Destiny esque star wars game a year later and fot whatever reason Destiny 3 comes out around the time I don't think the money can spread that far but then again I'm not a number cruncher. I just feel like they're going to wind up in the same place as they did before when they put out the medal of honor reboots while still putting out battlefield games and look at how well that went.
I guess I'm confused about what the state of mind is of the industry and/or us as the players. MMOs aren't huge anymore yet here we are talking about the death of the single player game but on the competitive multiplayer side of things call of duty isn't exactly killing it anymore either. Is it that there's just so many different types of players these days?
@engineno9: Is there really room for budget games in the modern market though? We're literally suffused with high-quality games, you could buy a new game every two weeks and they'd pretty much all be really good. Who has time in their schedule where they 'need' mediocre budget games to fill in the spaces? Seems to me like right now if you like games, your time is worth more than your actual money when it comes to deciding what to play (and I say this as an extremely poor grad student who can't afford to buy even like 1/4 of the games I want to play - even if I could buy them I don't know when I'd play them all). Go click through your steam queue and you'll find several games better than this one, and probably cheaper.
You forget that many people don't work as hard as those of us with multiple degrees. Not sure what your graduate degree is in but when I was working on my biochem degree and then my law degree the world load was insane and now as a lawyer definitely not less. Not everyone works the amount we do - which is why I am a capitalist but that goes into areas not fit for this forum.
