@FlarePhoenix: you're right, that is a different person

Thanks, I was fairly sure but not one hundred percent certain. Still, it probably doesn't matter to him much; he seems rather determined to attack all feminists without regarding what they're saying. I actually read the post he linked (about Dungeons of Dreadmor), and the person was quite reasonable in what she was saying. His representation of what she said was so off base it's not even funny.

People paid money for this? Feminism used to be cool, man.

what's "this"? A woman stating a correct opinion that wouldn't be controversial outside videogamer circles?

She shit on Dungeons of Dredmor because the "new female main character" was accompanied by various ethnicities and sexual preferences.

I'M NOT EVEN FUCKING KIDDING

Can we get a link on that, please?

"I didn't want to play this game because a bunch of sexist indie devs didn't have the funds to make a shitton of extra sprites for a female character. Now they put one in, but I can't play as a gay black woman."

I could be wrong, but I don't think this is the same person. Also, you're kind of misrepresenting what she is saying. She is actually praising the game for its decision - though she laments why it wasn't in the game in the first place - and says it is a step in the right direction. All she is saying is the next step would be to add in some characters of different races. She does not specify gender, and sexual preferences aren't even bought up in her writing.

She is actually been quite reasonable in what she is saying, and is willing to acknowledge when a developer does something good. I hate to say it but you're starting to come across as quite sexist; it's getting rather uncomfortable, really.

My advice?

move out of australia. I couldnt live in a place where videogames are so expensive. Plus thats just additional suffering on top of the constant threat of Great White sharks, sydney funnel web spiders, dingos, cobras, etc

and vegemite? ugh

seriously, Region 1 FTW

Yes, but on the upside we get all get to ride in the pouches of Kangaroos all day.

Also Vegemite is awesome... I could eat a jar of it on its own.

Listen, Feminist Frequency. In order for me to be a sexist, I have to be happy that Yorba is stupid and useless. I wish she would just save herself. I wish she would get away from the monsters and stopped making me suffer through annoying bullshit. But she won't.

This is also why I think developers are going to reduce the amount of lady characters in games to even less than there is now. Because any female character has to represent all of womanhood. When was the last time we looked at Nathan Drake or Harry Mason or Mario and used them as a comparison for the public perception of men?

I hope the feminist activists realize that women make games, too. I'm really irritated by the idea that all games are just male oppression. In your desire to help women all you do is tell all the women working in the industry that they are irrelevant and gender traitors.

If I could be bothered, I would give you a round of applause. It is so hard to make a minority character, because so many people are going to go over them with a fine comb looking for anything they can consider discrimination. It's like with Other M: if Samus had been a male, things like the "not turning on the fireproof suit until Adam authorizes it" moments would have been viewed as little more than "well that was kind of stupid". But because Samus is a woman it turns into this whole big thing where the entire game gets accused of been misogynistic.

As I said before, things would be a lot better if we could just let the past go, and not jump on every little thing that can be viewed as sexist. But, by the same token, it would be far better if we stopped making such a fuss every time someone came out with a less than favorable opinion on a game.

You know it's stuff like this which keeps video games from been taking seriously. Someone comes up with a fairly valid opinion on a game (which I'm not saying you have to agree with) and a lot of us just act like a bunch of immature children whose just had their favorite toy taken away. If you disagree with her outcome - personally, I'm on the fence until I hear her reasoning behind it - that's perfectly fine, but all you're doing is acting like a baby.

In the game ICO, the ruler of the castle the boy and girl are in is a QUEEN. If you like ICO, you support women ruling men and you should feel ashamed.

I think there are some deeper problems within the industry here. I can't relate to a queen, so why does the queen get to rule? Why can't the ruler be a king? Why is this game filled with so much hatred and sexism towards my fellow men?

I hope one day the video game industry as a whole wakes up and realizes how off-base and unreasonable it's become.

Why do you need to relate to the Queen? She's not the protagonist, so what does it matter? Queens can't be rulers now?

And the video game industry as a whole is doing misandry instead of misogyny? Really?

Don't worry, he's just having a little tantrum because Feminist Frequency tweeted they felt ICO to be sexist (they didn't say why, but it's probably to do with the whole "male having to drag and protect a helpless and mostly useless woman through the whole game" thing).

The thing that's interesting to me is all she said was she found the game sexist. Everyone else is defending the part they think she is talking about, so clearly a lot of people were at least thinking about it.

I say just tell your cousins. It's been 12 years they'll probably just find the entire thing humorous. We all do stupid shit when we're kids; I doubt they'll hold it against you (especially since you gave the stuff back).

That is irrelevant. Products should be charged on a cost and reasonable profit basis. Anything more is price gouging. Nothing entitled about that at all. If $40 is a reasonable return on a price of a game, then that applies everywhere. If it is retail, then other factors are at play.

My staff get $26 an hour by the way, but the absolute minimum is about $16.

Alright, entitled might have been a bit harsh; sorry about that. I actually asked someone at Gametraders once about the price and he told it is because here they only have one supplier for games. It means they can pretty much set whatever price they want, and the retailers need to make a profit so they need to charge more than that. With digital distribution, they can't charge a lot less than the retail stores otherwise they'll spit the dummy and refuse to stock the games altogether.

Honestly I would just be glad if they could release games down here around the same time as America. I want my Persona 4 Arena...
